Redditors Explain Which Types Of People Get Treated With Less Sympathy Than They Deserve
CW: domestic violence.
People carry biases and false beliefs with them about a broad spectrum of things.
Unfortunately, some of those beliefs involve people, and those beliefs can limit or even hurt them.
Redditor anthropocener47 asked:
"What kind of people often get treated with less sympathy?"
"Just Lose Some Weight," They Say
"People who are overweight."
"There is this perception that all of my issues are because I am overweight."
- grumpydinosaur77
Male Survivors
"I'm a male who has been a victim of Domestic Violence, and let me tell you: People not only don't take you seriously, but they'll actually put you down."
"They'll talk s**t about you. They'll say you deserved it. They'll belittle you for getting beat up by a girl; god help you if you actually physically defended yourself in any situation where you were getting assaulted by a woman."
"The most I've ever done is restrain a woman when she was beating on me. And I've had people tell me that this was going 'too far' and that I should have just stood there and taken it. And I am NOT a little guy, which seems to make things worse."
"If you get your a** kicked, you're a b***h. If you defend yourself, you're the abuser. There's absolutely no winning in that situation."
"There is 100% no sympathy for male victims of domestic violence. It's sickening how uniformly society acts regarding this topic."
- ImPrblyWeird
Angry PTSD
"People who lose their temper when desperately trying to get people to understand that they have been abused."
"It’s actually a serious problem in courts that abuse victims look crazy and unstable because they do normal human things like express emotion and are often quite emotional and anxious after their abuse so they are perceived as untrustworthy, shifty, easily confused, erratic and liars."
"Meanwhile, their abuser is calm and collected and charming and comes off very well because why wouldn’t they, none of this affects them. They just lie and get away with it and are believed that they are the stable one and their victim is crazy and the real abuser."
- badgersprite
Those Seeking Self-Improvement
"People who made some bad choices in the past and are trying to better their lives."
- Ok_Win7358
The Bullied Kids
"Kids who are bullied."
"'Well, I didn’t see it happen.' No, because he did it when you weren’t looking. That’s the point."
- Pro_Gamer_Queen21
The Elderly
"As a kid, I visited my grandparents in assisted living facilities several times a week. These were dementia wards where no one knew who anyone was. No one knew where they were or why they were there."
"Easily 90% of the time, we were the only family there. No one visited their crazy parents because it was scary and depressing."
"It’s really fueled my wish to study dementia and work with people who have it. Often they have no one to look out for them."
- an_ineffable_plan
Smile More
"People that don't smile. My best friend is an absolute angel of a person but I've only seen him smile a few times over the last seven years. Traumatic events are a motherf**ker."
- rockonyou717
Chronically Ill
"Chronically ill and disabled people who don’t get 'better' after a few months (because that’s not how chronic illness or disability f**king works)."
- SolidChildhood5845
Themselves to Blame
"People with Lung Cancer or Type 2 Diabetes. The 'you did this to yourself' attitude."
- kategoad
An Unfair System
"People who stutter. People who are quiet. People with social anxiety. People who can’t speak English well. Men who don’t earn. Men who earn less. Women who can’t conceive. People with mental disabilities."
- Painkiller124
"People in 'unskilled' positions. Sure, a burger flipper or custodian doesn’t need a college degree, but unskilled does not equal not hard work."
"Having to prepare so much food in little time, deal with rude customers, and cleaning up stuff. The number of stories of people smearing poop on the walls. The stuff these people go through, people should feel sympathy."
- guzhogi
Mental Illness on the Job
"I have BPD (Bipolar Disorder) and have suffered from depression for over 20 years."
"I've been applying for jobs lately where it asks for disability declaration and specifically mentions mental illness and I still have a hard time selecting it for fear of not being believed or it costing me the job."
- Clayroo
Severe Anxiety
"I had a hard time sympathizing with people who suffer from severe anxiety. My attitude was always 'just deal with it, stress is temporary.'"
"Last summer there was a series of events that triggered unprecedented anxiety for me, I didn't eat for days at a time, barely slept, and could barely function at work. It was absolutely debilitating and felt completely uncontrollable."
"A week on vacation helped but it came back as soon as I got home. So I went to my doctor and he prescribed a few meds, which helped a lot."
"Now I understand that kind of crippling anxiety, and I'm a lot more sympathetic to those who struggle to manage it."
- EncanisUnbound
Invisible Illness
"I LOOK so incredibly healthy. But I'm not. I'm crippled for life, and I'm in pain from it until it kills me. I keep quiet about it, because I don't want attention on it and I don't like to waste my energy making noise about it."
"But some people who find out are very weird about it."
"I look like a cherub. A cute young girl, with rosy cheeks, a lil chubby, very short, with a baby face. And seemingly healthy as heck."
"In reality, I'm a grown woman who is crippled as f**k, in agony most days, has hidden open sores under my hair, and arthritis in every joint including my neck and spine."
"I'm on more medications than both your grandparents combined. We're probably on some of the same ones. And for some of the ones I'm on, their doctor would refuse to give them."
"I might not live very long. But I also might, hard to say."
"But those times I have to fight to be treated like a person really and truly suck. Because My pain makes other people feel uncomfortable."
- littlegingerfae
The Poor
"There's a real disdain towards poorer people like they should magically be able to make more money."
"For lots of people, they have disadvantages that make that more difficult, like a lack of education or support, lack of time, illness or disability, or even just being stuck in a neverending cycle and having to time/money/ability to get themselves out."
"For some others, they prioritize other parts of life over money, and there's nothing wrong with making that choice for yourself."
- cmc
The subReddit was left collectively shaking its head as the community thought about the various people who are often undervalued, underappreciated, and under-supported, simply because of who they are.
But the worst truth is that so many of these situations are unavoidable, like growing older or being ill. Even for those that could be corrected with time, like having more money, it would only make sense that supporting that person more would allow them to change their situation more quickly.

Grandpa Pens The Most Bada$$ Letter To His Daughter After She Disowns Her Son For Being Gay
Even though there have been significant strides in the LGBTQ community's fight for equality, not everyone is as accepting in 2019.
Bored Panda cited the sobering statistics from GLAAD's annual Accelerating Acceptance report which stated that Americans ages 18 to 34 who are comfortable interacting with LGBTQ members has declined from 63% in 2016 to 45% in 2018.
This is a devastating setback for those who struggle with coming out of the closet to family members.
The poll revealed that 36% of young men and women admitted they were uncomfortable with the discovery someone in their family is LGBTQ.
Millennials were generally assumed to be more open-minded than previous generations, but GLAAD's survey results reveal the momentum of LGBTQ acceptance is losing steam and, sadly, headed in reverse.
One story from 2013 about a grandfather's reaction to his daughter's dismissal of her gay son resurfaced online and still remains as relevant as ever.
The grandfather penned a hand-written letter addressing his daughter Christine who kicked her gay son Chad out of the house after he came out of the closet.
In the viral letter from six years ago, gramps admonished his callous daughter for kicking her gay son out and calling him an "abomination."
"Dear Christine: I'm disappointed in you as a daughter," he wrote.
"You're correct that we have shame in the family, but mistaken about what it is."
"Kicking Chad out of your home simply because he told you he was gay is the real 'abomination' here. A parent disowning her child is what goes 'against nature.'"
"The only intelligent thing I heard you saying in all this was that 'you didn't raise your son to be gay'. Of course you didn't. He was born this way and didn't choose it any more than he being left-handed. You, however, have made the choice of being hurtful, narrow-minded and backward."
"So, while we are in the business of disowning our children, I think I'll take this moment to say goodbye to you. I now have a fabulous (as the gay put it) grandson to raise and I don't have time for heartless B-word of a daughter."
"If you find your heart, give us a call."
Many praised Chad's strongest ally in the family.
"Mama got owned. Or rather, disowned." – Pastafarian
"How could anyone put anything ahead of their love for their child? Religion, sexual orientation, anything. There may be things you don't like about your child, but how could anything be so bad that you stop loving them? Even if he turned out to be a serial killer, I would still love him and try to get him the help he needs, and guide him through the punishment he deserves. But stop loving him? Never." – The_Original_Gronkie
"This kind of thing makes me want to puke. Kudos and many many congrats to the Grandfather for standing up for his Grandson. I applaud this thoroughly decent man." – mdmck1

GLAAD President & CEO Sarah Kate Ellis admitted that LGBTQ acceptance has been taken for granted as the rise in non-LGBTQ Americans resisting acceptance has been negatively influenced by "divisive rhetoric in politics and culture."
One of the ways in which GLAAD is addressing the acceptance erosion – particularly from young men towards the LGBTQ community – is by launching a program to work with the video game industry to incorporate LGBTQ characters and story lines into games.
Ellis emphasized we cannot soley rely on legislation and judicial decisions for full acceptance of the LGBTQ Americans, but from "creating a culture where LGBTQ people are embraced and respected."

Ellis added:
"This year's results demonstrate an urgent need for GLAAD to reach younger Americans with stories and campaigns that build acceptance."

The Wall Of Supportive Post-It Notes Outside Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's Office Got So Massive It Had To Be Moved
Freshman Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has been a constant subject of mockery by conservative media ever since her surprising victory, who often target her for her age and lack of experience.
But the Democratic Congresswoman has also proved to be a force to be reckoned with and received endless amount of positive messages from supporters cheering her on to make positive changes in Congress.
The plaque outside of her office became a magnet for encouragement, with hundreds of colorful Post-its symbolizing a better future under her guidance.
Recently, the 29-year-old was asked to remove the inspirational adhesives.
So in memoriam, AOC posted a photo of the Post-it wall in its former state outside her office.
"RIP our post-it wall :(," she wrote in Tuesday's tweet.
"We were told it had to be taken down..."
But she assured us that the notes of encouragement are not gone forever.
"We moved it inside instead."
These are the colors of support and love.

Of course, her critics couldn't resist noting how childish the Post-it wall was to begin with, comparing the display to that of a "dorm room" and a "kindergarten classroom."
Nice try, guys.
Her supporters came through and challenged the haters.

It stood as a testament to her constituents' faith in her.
"It just appeared one day. Some mothers came by & left 2-3 encouraging notes on my plaque," she explained after some inquiry about the display.
"We left them up, bc it was great to read those little encouraging words every morning."

13-Year-Old Hockey Player Bullied By Racist Taunts Gets Special Message Of Support From His Idol ❤️
When 13-year-old Ty Cornett started getting bullied and called racist slurs while playing hockey, he wanted to quit. His father, Matthew was about to let him, until, that is, his son's story made its way to the boy's hero.
Nashville Predators defenseman P.K Subban recorded a video with words of encouragement for the young man.
from hockey
Ty started getting bullied at a tournament last spring. Since then, it's only gotten worse. It's not just the players either. Matthew shared on Reddit that even parents call his son racist insults.
It's a lot for a child to endure. So much that Matthew was considering pulling Ty from the sport. However, the father of one of Ty's teammates was able to tell Subban the story.
Awesome doesn't begin to describe it.
. @PKSubban1 being awesome as always https://t.co/PfE5W9mnMm #fuckracism #hockeyforeveryone— Ukraineguy🇨🇦🇺🇦 (@Ukraineguy🇨🇦🇺🇦) 1546895793

"Great video. Also I laughed because he keeps almost putting his hand to his pocket and then taking it out immediately."
- Ace676
Subban recorded the video during a game against the Detroit Red Wings.
"I can tell you this right now: As long as you're still breathing in this world, you've got to believe in yourself and let nobody tell you what you can and can't do, especially if it's because of the color of your skin."
The words of support touched everyone who saw it.
hockey players are the most wholesome athletes and hockey is the best sport https://t.co/i8rNz7lF1u— Jeff(rey) (@Jeff(rey)) 1546988638
"Does your sons team have room on the roster for a 6'3 210lb enforcer that is totally not 28?...."
- TheLoneCenturian
Great message from P.K. Subban to a 13 year old hockey player facing racism https://t.co/OjG90Pa6mK— Rob Gries (@Rob Gries) 1546882010
"PK's just taking a minute out of his day to do this, but can you think of the lifelong impact it'll have on the kid? Made me smile. Sometimes all it takes is a brief act of kindness to make a huge impact."
- laowarriah
Ty became a fan of Subban several years ago, when the athlete was with the Montreal Canadiens. Subban's aggressive style of play made a fan of the young boy, who now owns tons of Subban's merchandise. Ty even plays wearing the number 76 on the ice.
Subban himself receives racist insults, with fans throwing trash and calling him the n-word. He is one of nine black NHL players in the league.
It's sad racism can be so blatant.
"This is awesome. I hope your son takes this to heart and doesn't let racism stop him from doing what he loves.Side note: are the parents getting in trouble for the bullying their kids are doing?"
- GrumpyFinn
"That's fantastic! How did this get set up?
Also, sorry to hear that your son is being bullied - because that's what it is. Sending best wishes to your son and hopefully the taunting stops sooner than later because that's unacceptable."
- Mpetez
"This is a very serious problem that the coaches, refs and league administrators need to address with a zero tolerance policy."
- MceeMETAMORPHOSIS
"No room for racism or any other type of bigotry in hockey, any other sport, or this world. The more public figures that step up to stamp it out, the better. Rival on the ice, partner off of it. Thanks PK!"
- djlawrence3557
Ty was very excited to receive the message. In an interview with NHL.com, Matthew said:
"Saturday night he received the message and went nuts. He has probably watched the video 500 times. That night he had a game, and I have never seen him happier to go."
We hope things will get better for Ty and we can't wait to see what he does in the future!
