Marvel's 'The Eternals' Star Says Filming Of MCU's First Gay Kiss Was So Emotional That 'Everyone Cried On Set'
The Marvel train is charging forward, with the new movies in full swing of development. One of the more interesting ones is The Eternals, a movie about a secret race of superpowered humans.
The movie is also notable as another chance for the MCU to get some proper LGBTQ+ representation.
Actor Haaz Sleiman, who plays one half of the film series' first queer couple, has said the film includes Marvel's first gay kiss.
In an interview with LogoTV's NewNowNext, Sleiman said,
"I'm married to the gay superhero Phastos, played by 'Atlanta's' Brian Tyree Henry, and we represent a gay family and have a child."
Even beyond that, the two characters will share the first gay kiss in a Marvel Cinematic Universe movie.
"Oh, yeah, absolutely, and it's a beautiful, very moving kiss. Everyone cried on set. For me it's very important to show how loving and beautiful a queer family can be."
Which, honestly speaking, is super adorable, but it's also important for representation.
So fans have plenty of reason to be excited
But they also have reason to be apprehensive. In over twenty cinematic movies, an unambiguous queer character has yet to have a major role in a MCU movie.
Thor Ragnarok featured Valkyrie, who was written and Tessa Thompson portrayed as bisexual. However the scene which would have confirmed this was left on the cutting room floor.
Avengers Endgame has a cameo from director Joe Russo as a gay man at a group therapy session, mourning the loss of his partner. Which makes the first openly queer character a blink-and-you'll-miss-it scene.
You could say fans have been burned before.
Disney, the parent company of Marvel Entertainment, has a history of touting their inclusiveness with characters, but then make the scenes so small and inconsequential that they can be cut out and the movie unchanged.
This is done so the movies can be easily edited for release in countries which might have laws against homosexuality. A background lesbian kiss in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker was cut in Singapore, and it's believed the reason these scenes are made so small is to allow China to edit them out.
Because of this history, people are debating online if anything will come of this onscreen relationship.
Whether this film finally includes proper queer representation or not remains to be seen. We'll find out later this year.
The Eternals is set to release November 6, 2020. In addition to Brian Tyree Henry and Haaz Sleiman, it stars Richard Madden, Gemma Chan, Kumail Nanjiani and Angelina Jolie.
Marvel Just Shared An On-Set Photo From 'Avengers: Endgame' That Is 'Girl Power' Incarnate
Many Marvel fans were super excited by a particular scene in Avengers: Endgame that heavily featured many of the female cast members.
If you haven't seen Avengers: Endgame yet, there are spoilers ahead, so turn back now!
Avengers: Endgame was released on April 26th, and the internet has been full of talk of the movie since before that.
One scene in particular stood out to a lot of fans:
When every female superhero (except Black Widow) comes together to fight in the final battle of the film.
That kind of show of raw female power is a rare sight in films, and it touched a lot of fans; the women came together to honor a fallen ally and save the day.
Marvel Studios shared an on-set photo to Twitter that has fans feeling those feels all over again.
In the photo, all of the actresses who play the heroes from that iconic scene pose in costume with executive producer Trinh Tran and directors Anthony and Joe Russo.

Director James Gunn Opens Up About How Being Fired From 'Guardians Of The Galaxy: Vol. 3' Changed Him For The Better
Everything happens for a reason, right?
Director James Gunn was recently rehired to be at the helm of Guardians of the Galaxy 3, following the controversy surrounding his dismissal from the project.
However, Gunn cites the day he was fired as both the "worst" and "greatest" day of his life.
Gunn was fired from Guardians after a number of decade-old tweets by the director were discovered. The tweets consisted of jokes about pedophilia and rape, among other vile things.
Despite the fact that these tweets are ten years old, and Gunn had since apologized for writing and posting them, Disney still abruptly fired him.
The concept of "cancel culture" is something that is very prevalent in our media these days, and it is always refreshing to see someone own up to their mistakes. That wasn't enough to keep Disney from very publicly letting him go.
Since then, Disney rehired Gunn, and he is back directing Guardians 3. In a recent interview with Deadline, the director spoke of the loss and gain of his career, and how he grew from that experience.
"I didn't want to look back and feel bitter, upset or angry."
"Of course all sorts of emotions are attached to it."
"But I just wanted to be comfortable saying goodbye and splitting up, and that's where my head was at, even in the very early meeting we had, a week or two weeks after it all happened."
the most important (and instructive) part of that James Gunn interview is this: "People have to be able to learn f… https://t.co/PYOs2nviQh— britt hayes (@britt hayes) 1557940706.0

Gunn spoke openly about his mindset the day he was fired, saying that it was the most "intense" day of his entire life.
Though the good thing that came out of that was that he began to truly understand what it felt like to be devoted to his art.
"I think the one thing that is the most important for me from that day is this: I'm like a lot of people who come out here and want to be rich and famous, to have people love them."
"I am an artist first and foremost; I love telling stories, I love interacting with my characters, I love designing sets. But I'm also a guy who found what I thought was love, through people loving me, and through my work."
Hindsight is always 20/20, and it is possible for those who have been "cancelled" to grow into more self-aware human beings.
However not everyone agreed Gunn deserved another chance.

Gunn makes it a point in the interview to show that he had grown from the experience, and that's all we can hope for in situations like this.
He added:
"If we take away the possibility for someone to learn and become a better person."
"I'm not sure what we are left with. I've learned all kinds of things about myself through this process."
After 1000 Castings, One Woman's Super-Powered Casting Abilities Created The MCU As We Know It
In 2006, Sarah Finn, casting director for newly Oscar winning movie Crash, was about a decade into her casting career when she became an integral part of something huge.
It started with a meeting to cast Iron Man, which is how she ended up holding a list of qualities director Jon Favreau wanted to see in his Tony Stark.
To name a few he wanted Stark to have charisma, quick wit and immense intelligence.
Finn said about the list:
"I still have them on a piece of paper somewhere."
Favreau—at Finn's recommendation—cast then Hollywood bad boy Robert Downey Jr. which raised more than a few eyebrows and objections. Downey's struggles with substance abuse had damaged his mainstream career.
Of course, the character Tony Stark's reputation was pretty tarnished too.
The risk definitely paid off. Downey's morally ambiguous superhero in 2008s Iron Man set up almost all of the 21 movies that make up the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
The exception being the Hulk film without Mark Ruffalo that we don't talk about.
While the original casting was a risk, it is now hard to see anyone else but Robert Downey Jr as Iron Man. The same can be said for any superhero in the MCU.
This is largely thanks to Sarah Finn taking on the gargantuan task of casting these movies, with the exceptiong of Edward Norton's take on The Incredible Hulk which released a month after Iron Man.
This means she cast more than a thousand roles from Chris Evans' Captain America himself right down to those "man with a plan" backup dancers.
This job meant she had to take into account the traits each character displayed in the current movie, but also the movies planned but unwritten.
Finn said:
"It wasn't until we got into Captain America and Thor that Kevin Feige even mentioned the Avengers films."
Kevin Feige is the president of Marvel Studios. He also consults with casiting directors, fellow executives and directors on each film.
One perfect example of this unpredictability casting the voice of JARVIS. Paul Bettany was cast as Stark's AI, but Finn didn't know J.A.R.V.I.S would eventually be transferred into Vision.
Luckily Bettany was able to take on that role as well.
Another example was the casting of Princess Shuri for Black Panther. When casting, Finn had to look at the chemistry between Letitia Wright and Robert Downey Jr since they'd share screen time later on in the franchise.
That scene did happen, although it was changed to Letitia Wright and Mark Ruffalo.
And, of course, there is the Mad Titan himself: Thanos.
Finn said:
"When Thanos first appeared in the Marvel movies, it was really just a couple lines of dialogue."
"The character was shadowy and not that visible. To see him go from a few lines to being one of the most iconic villains of all time in movie history, I don't think Josh [Brolin] even knew how his character was going to be represented on screen, or the impact he would possibly have."
She also worked around scheduling conflicts and story time lines with huge casts of big stars. There was a year between the releases of Spiderman: Homecoming and Captain America: Civil War but the story lines happen one after the other.
Finn had to find a Spiderman who wasn't going to change dramatically in the year between films so a true teenager was out.
"We had to find a young actor who hopefully wasn't going to grow six inches in the intervening time period. Poor Tom Holland was so antsy and ready to start shooting."
She had similar challenges when casting characters like Thor. They needed someone with Asgardian qualities who could still blend in with Earthlings.
While most casting directors have 12 to 16 weeks to cast roles, Finn often started a year or more in advance to take all these extra needs into consideration.
Now Finn is casting, or has cast, other anticipated movies.

A Marvel Fan Described How A Muslim Man Indirectly Saved The MCU And Now Its Going Viral For All The Right Reasons
**WARNING: Spoilers ahead.
While it took a whole team of Earth's mightiest heroes to go after Thanos, one Marvel fan has reminded us that the entire MCU owes a debt of gratitude to the actions of one regular man.
WARNING: Spoilers ahead.
It's been a long road for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, 11 years and 22 movies all leading up to the final fight with Thanos. For those who still haven't caught Avengers: Endgame this is where the spoilers come in.
By now the rest of us know that Tony Stark laid down his life to save the universe and defeat Thanos—making the ultimate sacrifice Tony snapped his fingers and was killed by the overwhelming energy produced by the Infinity Gauntlet.
But as great a debt the universe owes to Iron Man's sacrifice, Tony himself remembers that his journey began 11 years outside that cave in Afghanistan.
Marvel Studios' Avengers: Endgame - Official Trailer www.youtube.com
From that point on Tony began his odyssey as Iron Man.
But one Marvel fan has reminded us that Tony, Iron Man, The Avengers and the entire MCU might not have come to be if not for the extraordinary sacrifice of one ordinary man, Dr. Ho Yinsen.
After taking shrapnel from one of his own weapons, Tony was as good as dead as the small pieces of metal made their way to his heart. But Yinsen stepped in to save Tony's life.
Later Yinsen laid down his life to save Tony once again as he made his escape from the cave in Afghanistan where he was being held prisoner by the terrorist group known as the Ten Rings.
With his final breath Yinsen reminded the then arms-dealing, war-mongering, billionaire playboy Tony:
"Don't waste your life."
At the time Yinsen may have saved just one man, but indirectly his sacrifice saved the entire MCU.
