People Describe Their Strangest Irrational Fear

I am who I am.

Step on a crack, break you mother's back. I tell you that phrase has haunted me for decades. It was told to me by an adult who was clearly messing with my head, but the way he made me feel, my body has never forgotten so to this day. I jump over all cracks I see. Just in case. I'm also superstitious. You're welcome, mom. We all have fears that seem irrational, even to our own minds, but we just can't help being held hostage sometimes. Thank God for therapy and vodka.

Redditor u/SweetP1078 wanted everyone to discuss all the phobias and life anxieties that hinder the everyday by asking.... What's your strange irrational fear?

Who's Watching?

jim carrey what GIFGiphy

That my entire life has been recorded and will be released to the public.

What is Wrong with me?

Unknowingly being severely mentally deficient/ill.

angustifolius

Me too! Sometimes I wonder if I'm developmentally disabled, and everyone around me is just pretending like I'm not.

jeanettesey

I have asked this question to a lot of people, about myself. I feel smart, but just different than other people and wonder if they all act like they really like me. I guess I see people treat me differently than I see them treat others. I suspect it's because I'm very personable but could just be my imagination.

A 2 Way Mirror

That time travel will be possible in the future sort of like an exhibit, where people can secretly watch you in a "two way mirror-like" way. When i'm doing weird stuff alone, i always point in a random direction and squint to make the future person think I'm onto them. But then again, they could just be watching me type this comment and know I'm bluffing. commence internal screaming.

Ajar....

Doors left slightly cracked open at night.

Then you just see a dark hand reach in and then a dark face with deep dark sunken in eyes, with the most about of hatred possible, then it gets down on all fours and open its mouth until there jaw is broken.... then runs at you.

It's 4am and I just woke up, sorry if this is gonna scare you.

Don't Answer

Answering phone calls from unknown number.

Anna081428

I have come to the conclusion that they are 99% advertising campaigns so I simply don't answer. Now I have an irrational fear of losing an important call despite no one would try to contact you only by phone and only once.

Through the Nostrils

Not being able to breathe through my nose.

It's enough to trigger an immediate panic attack especially if I'm asleep.

I even had nose surgery to stop it blocking up, so I wasn't living in a state of high anxiety with panic attacks every night.

Unfortunately the nose surgery recovery went wrong and it got completely blocked for 3 weeks, so now I have a strong fear of hospitals as well.

Inside of Me

Worms.

I'm afraid they'll get inside of me and I'll see them slithering around under my skin.

Horbs_of_the_Glade

They're literally my phobia, it was a real struggle last year for my zoology labs, I now know more about worms than I wished.

HalaMakRaven

I have the irrational fear of maggots and worms crawling over me and a few days ago while I was sitting on my couch and got up I literally saw a few maggots crawling where I sat holy crap.

And all of that because my girlfriend cannot stop eating on the couch and gets the food everywhere which attracts these morons.

A ceiling fan becoming loose and falling on me/my family.

In the Can

Canned drinks.

True stories of bugs and rodents ending up in canned packaging are bad enough, but I'm also afraid that something has crawled into the can after opening it. It's not like we stare at the drink until we're finished with it, and you can't see the contents. Ugh... gives me chills just thinking about it.

From the Back

where is it monday night raw GIF by WWEGiphy

When I'm reaching my hand into my backpack (or similar items) I think my hand is gonna get bitten by a spider or a raccoon. Think this came from a jump scare in until dawn.

This November, Puerto Ricans can vote on one of three options–including becoming the 51st state in the U.S.

The U.S. House of Representatives introduced the Puerto Rico Status Act last December.

The bill would grant the island commonwealth either U.S. statehood, independence, or independence while retaining some U.S. affiliations.

When Ruth Bader Ginsburg passed away in the fall of 2020, the United States panicked.

Namely, democrats and liberals were terrified by the prospect of another conservative judge on the United States Supreme Court, which already had a two-seat majority.

Then of course, there was the ongoing debate as to whether or not then-sitting president Donald Trump was entitled to pick another Supreme Court judge, as the 2020 presidential election was only weeks away.

Barack Obama was famously banned from appointing Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court owing to the fact that it was an election year, even though President Obama still had eight months left in his presidency.

Of course, RBG's death at age 87 also brought to the forefront an ongoing debate about whether there should be age limits for Supreme Court Justices.

As humans with autonomy and knowledge, we try to protect ourselves as much as we can. However, accidents do happen, and while we can expect the unexpected, we can't always protect ourselves from it.

Because there isn't always a defense, people sometimes have a close brush with death. They experience something that could've killed them but, by some miracle... didn't.

More people have stories like that than we expect.

Redditors are no exception and, in fact, were eager to share their close calls.
