People Share Medical Facts Everyone Should Know

Somethings I just don't want to know!

There are way too many things that we ignore when it comes to our health. So much of our ignorance is of course fear. If we ignore it, then it's not real. But illness is illness and the sooner you know all the facts the faster to getting healthy. Knowledge is power, the more you know the healthier you stay. Preventative medicine is key.

Redditor u/ATOM-Tomzej wanted to make sure that we are all up to speed about our health and bodies.... What's a medical fact or tip everyone should know? Get to know the facts.

No juice for Shelby!

Giphy

Please, don't give an unconscious diabetic insulin. You're probably going to kill them if you do. 733094

Also as a paramedic to add to this don't do the opposite and start cramming crackers and juice in their mouth while they are unconscious. They will aspirate. You wouldn't believe how many people do this even other people in the medical field. dtom93

Don't Pull!!

DO NOT PULL IT OUT!! LEAVE IT IN UNTIL TRAINED PROFESSIONALS HAVE ARRIVED! To put that into perspective, we'd still have Steve Irwin (maybe) if he had not pulled that f**king barb out. WideWiredWild

Don't put it back in if u already pulled it out... but for real just don't take it out, it ruins the clotting. college_bound2020

Acknowledge Pain!

When I complained about physical problems my parents often dismissed it. Don't ignore physical pain of yourself or others and listen if someone complains about pain. I've walked around with a broken bone in my foot for multiple weeks as a child before getting medical attention and later had bells palsy and didn't say a thing. Koroit_

How many lumps?

If your testicle has a painless lump on it, go see a doctor. woodmeneer

Yeah, sort of. I am a Urologist. Seen too many young men come in who have had this lump for quite a while, but didn't have the balls (sorry) to go see a doctor. Early stage testis cancer is very, very treatable, however the later you come in, the greater the chance of metastasis. Even then it is still very treatable, but the sooner it's diagnosed, the better. woodmeneer

You can't stop the Beat!

Giphy

If you find yourself having to perform CPR, compress the patient's chest at the same beat count of the Bee Gees Stayin' Alive. blaspheminCapn

I imagine some poor EMT unknowingly singing it out loud while giving CPR while the victim's family watches in a horrified stupor. TeddyBearToons

Take it All!

Finish your antibiotics completely, even if you already feel better. Doing this prevents those last few bacteria from becoming immune and creating super diseases that we cannot cure. canesfan09

Let me make a note here: In America, the pharmacist makes you a bottle of as many pills as prescribed. In many places, we buy medicine in pre-sealed boxes with a aluminum foil/plastic card with a specific number of pills that might not correspond to what was prescribed. (It's usually more). So, don't take all of them, but as many as you were prescribed. If you are not sure, call your doc or visit your pharmacist again. (I'm sure that wouldn't be any extra charge). Lactiz

Important Facts...

First aid

Someone's having a seizure - don't restrain them, or put anything in their mouth, just move any objects away from them, and place some padding under their head. Once the seizure stops if they're still not fully responsive, then put them on their side into the recovery position.

Someone swallowed chemicals/poison - don't encourage them to be sick. This can make things far worse as you cause additional burns on the way back up, or they start choking on it. Call an ambulance, try to identify the chemical/poison and follow any instructions they give.

Injured people who can't move themselves should be left where they are unless there's an immediate threat to their safety.

Motorcyclists helmets - if they've been in an accident then as long as they can maintain an open airway and breathe leave the helmet on. Only remove it if it's causing airway or breathing difficulties.

Nosebleeds - you tilt the head forward now, not backwards. This advice changed many years ago but the amount of people I still see saying to tilt head back is frustrating. GrumpyOldDan

Careful.

Do not retract an uncircumcised baby's penis. The foreskin is supposed to be attached to the head at first and comes apart later. Pulling it back will rip it, hurting the baby, and create scar tissue. storm_queen

Chest Pains.

Signs of a heart attack in women are not your typical "tight chest, arm pain" symptoms as in men. Women typically experience stomach upsets and cramping first. Likewise, many people experiencing heart attack symptoms do not seek emergency treatment because they are in denial. Jay1313

Roll them over....

Giphy

If someone is unconscious but still breathing don't lay them on their back, lay them on their side. Lord_Danke_Boi_III

Preferably on their left side, if you have a choice. PrestigiousPath

Teacher standing in front of a classroom

It's a teacher's job to leave a lasting impression and set a good example for their students.

With this in mind, particularly in this age of viral videos and social media, teachers have to be very careful of what they say during class hours.

Even so, there are very few teachers who haven't said something they've regretted when teaching a class.

Sometimes to control unruly students, other times when they've simply had enough.

Then too, sometimes teachers leave their students baffled and perplexed by what they say in their classroom, well aware of what they were saying.

Always making for a memorable story.

As a kid, I never raised alarm bells even when I started to feel sick. My mom got stressed easily and was busy taking care of my younger brother, so I never wanted to be a burden by making her take me to the doctor only to find out nothing was wrong.

However, in fifth grade, my ears started to hurt and I knew something was wrong. I told my mom, she took me to the doctor, and I found out I had an ear infection.

Now, an ear infection isn't serious at all, and it was easily treatable. Still, I learned something from that experience: no one knows your body better than you. You know if and when you're sick and how serious it is, even if you don't now exactly what is wrong.

Redditors can corroborate this. Many of them have experienced symptoms that told them they were sick in some way -- usually with a very serious illness -- and are ready to share those experiences.

When in the beginning stages of dating, it's important to know as much as humanly possible.

The element of surprise is no longer a fun aspect of romance.

Ask the small questions. Ask the hard questions.

Interrogate. Grill. Investigate.

Of course, you should do it with a subtle hand instead of an interrogation lamp.

The truth is all we have.

Ask everything.

Woman letting go of boyfriend's hand

As much as we always hop for our dating efforts to be worth it and for every relationship to work out, we all know that some relationships are not destined to work out.

But sometimes relationships end for totally valid reasons, and sometimes the reasons are painful, if not devastating.
