People Break Down Which Careers Attract The Biggest Jerks

You kind of know already what kind of people are attracted to what kind of job. Chefs love working with food, teachers love helping kids, and actors love performing all the time. However, certain jobs also attract a very different kind of individual: jerks, people who make working there a literal nightmare, and those professions are highlighted in the entries below.

Reddit user, u/Catnplantladyy, wanted to know:

What careers attract the biggest jerks?

What Else Are We Going To Talk About? The Kids?

i say this as someone in the field but teaching seems to attract gossip hounds and people with a martyr complex

Julios_Eye_Doctor

My wife taught for three decades. I have seen a lot of the gossip BS. The fascinating part for me was seeing how many school counselors, were bat sh-t, certifiable, flat out crazy. There were many wild situations with that group, over the years.

Software engineers.

Damn the elitism and gatekeeping is so unreal.

Power Over Others

In my experience, any job that gives people power over others.

Police. Army. Security Guard. Border control. Even caregivers. Now, of course 99% of them are not jerks and went into that kind of job to protect and serve others. But there is a minority of people on a power trip.

CSL456123

Absolutely the common denominator is having power over people. Some people go into it explicitly or find they like it subconsciously, or get jaded and settle in.

To add more examples: teachers (power over students), nurses (over their patients), managers (instead of working with products/customers, they control employees), local politicians, HOA boardmembers, club leaders.

Something We've Learned From Pop Culture

In my experience, weirdly, the fire department.

Younger firefighters in some cases are some of the biggest douchebags that I've met while working. Not as big of an issue at all with older firefighters. They're generally super cool.

Such Little Power Go To Their Heads

Minimum wage job managers. Most likely older people that are grumpy all the time and smell like cigarettes

anniebyers3

[I] think this is just them being jaded from being stuck in that position for probably their entire life, rather than being a jerk from the start

On-Air Conmen

Televangelists

JamiSings

There really needs to be stricter laws for con artists and grifters. Televangelists, psychics, multilevel marketers, etc are given way too much freedom considering they are obvious criminals.

In regards to medical specialties, surgeons have a reputation for being arrogant.

ilgeo

Soooooo many surgeons just have zero people skills. But a lot of other surgeons think they're god

Law.

I'm in law school and it seems like the vast majority of people are jerks, to put it politely. I keep hearing that my faculty is one of the better ones in the country and that people are much worse in others.

It literally feels like high school, only with people who think they're the most clever humans on earth.

Influencer seems more like a phase than a career.

Seems more like a period in their life then they drop off the face of the planet

This is my experience. It takes a certain kind of person to be good at it and enjoy what is fundamentally manipulating people into buying stuff they don't want .

When looking at a resume, it's easy to understand how prospective employers will assume someone is very intelligent based on their education and past experience.

But one shouldn't only assume someone's intelligence based on what they read.

More often than not, one can tell rather quickly that someone possesses above-average intelligence, based on how they speak, how they behave, or other telling details.

With each passing year of a marriage, couples will often discover that while they don't love each other any less than they once did, that spark their relationship used to carry has faded.

This will often lead these couples to look for ways to spice things up a bit.

Among the more popular experiments is inviting a third member to their bedroom.

Enticing as this prospect is, however, it's also easy to be intimidated by the reality of it, or even the mere suggestion of it.

People Share Their Best 'You Either Die The Hero Or Live Long Enough To Become The Villain' Experiences

"You either die the hero or live long enough to become the villain."

Though not necessarily a universal truth, all of us have witnessed unfortunate moments in our lives where we've seen this saying become a reality.

Be it seeing our favorite public figures take a serious fall from grace, someone we know and admire eventually disappointing us in a devastating manner, or even seeing ourselves turn into someone we promised we'd never become.

People Describe The Darkest Thing They've Ever Done That They Don't Regret

Sometimes we do things that have to be done.

And some of those things live in life's gray area of right and wrong.

What comes as a surprise to some is when we don't care if we're wrong.

We may still technically be in the right.

But morally and ethically, there may be some issues.

But still, many people don't care.
