People Divulge The Scariest Thing They Learned About Someone From Their Childhood
Reddit user ValuableHovercraft90 asked: 'What's the scariest thing you have found out about someone from your childhood (old friends, teachers, etc)?'
Life is all about learning new things, including learning new things about the people in your life. Sometimes, the things you learn are shocking, disgusting, or even scary.
I was the new kid in town when I was in fifth grade and my first friend was this quiet (and cute) boy in my class. He and I remained friends through middle school, and even though we drifted apart in high school, our interactions when we ran into each other in the halls or the cafeteria were really nice.
All throughout school and even beyond, he remained quiet, polite, and reserved. Just a few years ago, I read a news article written about him. He had apparently fatally wounded his father after an argument.
I had to reread the article several times to make sure it was really about my old friend. I think about it a lot, and still can't believe it!
I'm not the only one that has a shocking story like that. A lot of Redditors learned shocking or scary things about people from their childhood, and are ready to share.
It all started when Redditor ValuableHovercraft90 asked:
"What's the scariest thing you have found out about someone from your childhood (old friends, teachers, etc)?"
So Creepy
"That the boy who lived across the street and moved when I was 6 is still obsessed with me and my sister 30+ years later and posts ramblings on Facebook with our names and that he's going to be with us. Pretty terrifying honestly."
– mrscrawfish
The Worst List
"A neighbour died when he was 30. Police searched a trailer he owned and found weapons, bombs and a list of people he wanted to kill. My uncle was on that list."
– Flashy_Somewhere_648
"I'm glad this ended the way it did."
– CreepyCandidate4449
Terrifying
"One of my best friends (and locker partner) from high school was kidnapped by terrorists in Iraq. After a nightmare of 6+ months, all went silent. We buried an empty casket in his memory 10 years later."
– francois_du_nord
"This is horrifying. How incredibly sad for family to never get any closure. Very sad to read this. :("
– fizzycherryseltzer
"About 15 years ago my dad received a very good offer for work in Iraq, as a construction specialist. He was considering going, since at the same time the financial crisis started in Europe, but then one of his friends, a civil engineer, was kidnapped. Never returned back either."
– 19lgkrn70
"Same thing for my dad old coworker told him how great the money was. Dude got sniped working on a radio tower or something. My dad luckily was like, "I got a wife and family that would kill me for doing something so dangerous.""
– tristanjones
End Of The Friendship
"One of my dad's good friends, and my "uncle", just stopped coming around one day. I was told he was always busy with work, away, etc."
"Turns out, he killed 3 people in a drug deal gone bad and got life in prison."
"What's scary, is that we were over at his house for a weekend BBQ with a bunch of people earlier in the day of the night he did it, and it happened at his house."
– pnwking509
School Friends
"Don't know if it was scary, but I grew up with a kid whose birthday was the day before mine so we almost always shared birthdays in elementary school. We were friends, even spent the night at his house growing up. Later on in our teens, he started getting into some really dark stuff. I recognize that now as his being a sociopath, but like most everybody else at the time, figured it was just him going through some kind of emo phase. Over the years, we lost touch but I would occasionally run into him around town and our meetings were cordial, if not friendly."
"Last year, he was sentenced to 35 years in prison for killing a man back in 1993, roughly 3 years after we got out of High School. Apparently he, his sister and another man lured this guy out to the boonies and killed him to steal money he had gotten in an insurance settlement."
"The only reason they were caught is the other guy got religion, felt remorse and went on the local TV station and aired a confession before turning himself in (He got 25 to life)."
– 530_Oldschoolgeek
"A girl I went to school with did the same thing. She was the nicest girl, got good grades & was kind of a dork. Mixed with the wrong people after graduation. She and two others lured an old man into an abandoned building, stabbed him and robbed him. He later died from his wounds."

The Worst Afternoon
"I had a friend in grade school who was being raised by her single dad. She had a unique name and pretty face. She never talked about her mom, and she was super outgoing, so all us kids just made friends with her quickly. It was weird her dad never brought her to our birthday parties, even though she was always invited, but we didn’t think much of it. A couple times, she was allowed to ride the bus home with me after school, and we played and had fun until her dad came to pick her up. Later in the school year, she invited me to ride the bus to her house, and my mom agreed. I was 10. It was the scariest afternoon of my young life. I cannot articulate the extreme tension in her home. We weren’t allowed to make any noise, and we mostly stayed outside, me desperate for my mom to arrive."
"Her dad screamed at us for opening the door, and I was too nervous to go into the house to use the restroom. I knew she was embarrassed that there were no snacks or comforting interactions, like at my house. I didn’t really tell anyone how uncomfortable the experience was. After that day, I didn’t hang out with her a lot. We were in different classes, drifted apart, and decades later, when my own daughter asked to go to a friend’s house, I thought about that girl."
"As an adult, I figured out her dad probably worked a night shift and tried to sleep during the day…or he was an alcoholic who was really angry. Maybe both? I looked her up on social media, and thanks to her unique name and face, I recognized her immediately. She’s a perfectly well-adjusted woman with a beautiful family. She even had pictures of her kids with her dad and tributes to him as the greatest father and grandpa. Her whole page made me wonder what the hell I experienced that afternoon in the 4th grade?"

School Is Supposed To Be Safe!
"In our school, we had something called "de halte." In English, it means "the halt" literally translated. Basically time out. BIf you had a meltdown in class or you were just a little sh*thead, you were sent there for 15 minutes or so to cool off.
The de hatle teacher got fired and jailed for breaking 4 different wrists of 4 different students by bending them the wrong way..."
– Ok_Win7358
*Skin Crawling*
"There was this classmate a grade below me but all grades shared the same drama class. She was weird and kind of "off." I tried to befriend her at one point and was rebuffed. It later came out that she was actually an almost 30-year-old woman who would show up in a new area claiming to be a 15-year-old runaway. Kind of freaked me out."

Truck Drivers Describe The Creepiest Things They've Ever Seen On The Road
CW: Graphic stories about accidents.
When you spend a lot of time on the road, you're bound to see some crazy or spooky things.
Truck drivers spend a lot of time on the road, and it seems like they've seen plenty of creepy things. The truck drivers of Reddit are ready to share those creepy sights and stories.
It all started when a Redditor asked:
"Truckers of reddit! What spooky things did you witness on the road?"
Yikes!
"my grandfather-in-law, who recently passed away, said back in the 70s, he saw a man get decapitated by some kind of heavy duty cable at a truck stop."

Shouting Fire On A Street
"I was driving between Melbourne and Albury very late one night on the Hume Fwy. For the non-Aussies, that stretch of the Hume is very wide, flat, and straight, so it's boring and hypnotic, especially driving alone at night."
"It was the middle of summer, so I was surprised to see little wisps of fog whipping through my headlight beams, but then the smell of burning plastic hit my nose and I realised it was smoke. Up ahead, there was one other car on the road, and I could just see a tiny yellow light on the back, like a candle flame."
"Worried, I sped up to catch this guy, and by the time I reached him his entire muffler was on fire. I flashed my lights and honked my horn, trying to get his attention. Just as I drew up alongside him, I saw him turn to look at me, and then a HUGE gout of orange flame burst out from under the car and licked across his driver's side window."
"Needless to say, he pulled over in a big hurry and I pulled over about 50 metres ahead of him. I jumped out from behind the wheel and sprinted back to him to make sure he was out of the car and safe, then back to get my phone, and called emergency services while running back to him. It was less than a minute since he'd pulled over and the entire car was a fireball."
"I asked if he was okay, and he said yeah, but his phone and wallet were both still inside the car. I let him use my phone to make some calls and gave him all the cash in my wallet, which wasn't much at the time, and finally continued on my way once the firefighters and ambulance arrived."
"Let's just say I was WIDE awake for the rest of my drive."
– MCDexX
A Truck Driving Hero
"TL:DR Stopped to help a motorist with a possible flat, may have prevented a murder."
"I service fire equipment, so I drive a box truck, and cover parts of PA, NY, OH, MD, and WV. I was in rural NW PA, returning from a service call and heading towards the interstate to go home."
"On the way to this customer, I saw a small pickup truck on the interstate whose right rear tire was steadily deflating. A mile or so before my exit, they pulled off to the side. I didn't stop to see if they needed help, and felt a little bad about it."
"As I drove down this dark, twisty road, I passed a Dodge Durango pulled over into a barn driveway. There was a person lying on the ground behind it, struggling with something. It looked like the guy was trying to change a tire or get the spare out from under the Durango."
"Remembering the pickup from earlier, I decided to turn around and see if he needed help. I pulled into the first driveway I saw, about 1/4 mile down the road, turned around, and headed back. Halfway back, the Durango passed me, going the direction I had originally been headed."
"I got back to where I had seen the Durango, planning to turn around again, but as I swung into the driveway, my headlights caught a figure lying motionless in the snow."
"I stopped and jumped out just as the figure sat up. It was a woman, maybe in her 40s, in a thin, torn black skirt and top. Her hair was mussed, her eye was starting to swell, she had red marks on her throat, and her lip was bleeding."
"I helped her up, got her into my truck, and cranked up the heat. I had taken my jacket off, so I gave it to her, and she covered her torso and arms."
"She didn't want to say anything. Her throat was sore, and she was badly frightened. I called 911, and they dispatched a police car."
"I gave her a bottle of water, and she whispered, "Thank you", then sat with her head bowed and eyes closed. It took about 15 minutes for the police car to get there, and she stayed silent."
"As the car pulled in, she said, mostly to herself, "He's gonna arrest me." The trooper walked up and motioned me to exit, asked her if she needed an ambulance (she declined) then asked me what had happened."
"I explained what I had seen. He wrote everything down, then talked to her for a few minutes. He helped her out of the truck and into his car. She quietly thanked me for coming back, because she thought that guy meant to kill her."
"A far as I know, she wasn't arrested. She was pretty beat up, and the trooper spoke and handled her as if she were the victim of an assault. It was almost certainly a transaction that had gone badly."
"I never found out what had happened. I watched the news outlets for that area for a while, but never found anything."
– Jef_Wheaton
Put On Your Seatbelt
"A fresh solo traffic accident. the car was flipped upside down on its roof. the drivers head was halfway out to the neck, through the shattered front window. he did not have a seatbelt on."
– Divutski
"With a seatbelt you not only protect your life but also the mental well-being of others. No one should have to see something like this!"

Never Found Out The Truth
"I used to travel for work doing construction. My boss was driving and I was passenger. were on our way back home from Tennessee to Illinois. Just leaving the mountains but still pretty much the middle of nowhere and we notice a couple dead deer on the road. These things are like... Exploded. My boss and I say something about "that sucks, a semi must have been hauling and clipped a herd". We get to the top of a hill and there are so many more dead exploded deer. Possibly hundreds. Definitely dozens. They didn't look like they got hit by a semi. They looked like they had sticks of dynamite put into them and lit off."
"Semi trucks had definitely been driving through because we didn't have to dodge any of them. And we were driving our big work truck and trailer so if we had to crush a couple it was no big deal. It went on for more than half a mile. Maybe up to a mile and a half."
"My boss had been on the road a lot more years than I had. I asked him "what the hell was that?" And he seemed just as lost as me. Said "I have no f*cking idea and I'm not stopping to find out. That sh*t didn't make any sense.""
– kickaguard
Migrating Tarantulas
"My mom is a trucker, this is her story."
"She was driving through Arizona when she saw what she thought was leaves blowing across the road in the distance. This puzzled her since there's mostly pine trees in northern Arizona. When she finally got to the "leaves" she realized that they were migrating tarantulas, 1000s of them. There were so many of them that her truck was sliding on their guts so she had to slow down. She stopped at the first truck stop and told her co-driver to fuel up (he was sleeping at the time) because she wasn't going to step foot outside after what she just saw. Her co-driver was pissed since it was technically his time off, and he thought she was crazy, until he saw the tarantula guts and legs caked in the inside wheel well of the truck."
– digitalmarketeramil
Last Words
"She also outran a tornado in the midwest. She was about to pull over and take cover until she saw another big rig that was parked on the side of the road get tossed a couple hundred yards like a toy. She called me and told me that she thought she was going to die and wanted her last words to be "I love you" to me. She pulled off the freeway and got to a Wal-Mart, where she ran into the basement where all the staff and customers were taking shelter. After the tornado passed, they stepped out of the basement and into daylight, since the Wal Mart was destroyed."
"She has many many stories like this. Trucking is 90% boredom, 10% insane sh*t like this."
– digitalmarketeramil
The Dog-Man
"A trucker I know claims he was driving a logging truck down a remote dirt road in the middle of a forest at around midnight when a "dog-man creature" walked out in the middle of the road. It stared at him for a few seconds plainly visible and well illuminated by all the auxiliary lights on the truck, then it just took off and disappeared into the woods on the other side of the road."
"He's not a superstitious man and he rejects everything supernatural as fiction, but he 100% believes that what he saw that night was real. I've only heard him talk about this twice, he was very drunk both times he opened up about it. Just talking about it rattled him, he was clearly uncomfortable thinking back about that night."
– Kitten-Eater
Truly Tragic
"This happened in Chennai, India. Was driving back into the city on the two-lane coastal highway with a few of my friends. Most of the highway has no streetlights, just reflectors. Around on of the bends, my friend who was driving slammed on his brakes. This was just after sunset."
"At first, all we could see were two motorbikes on their sides, little debris from them scattered around. It was only when we got closer that we saw three guys laying down awkwardly."
"Turns out, the bikes were heading in opposite directions at high speeds, lost control and slammed head-on. The riders of one of the vehicles wasn’t wearing his helmet, and his face was smashed. We could hear his shallow gasps for air, but he was definitely a goner."
– dontdieinthesky
Definitely Ghosts
"When I was a kid my mother was driving at night with my step-dad in the passenger seat and us three kids in the back."
"Apparently (I learned about it later as I was asleep) what happened was my mother and father both saw, flitting across the road from one side to the other, two glowing silhouettes of what looked like two little girls holding hands. My mother said, picture a silhouette, only instead of featureless black this was featureless bright yellow/white, in the perfect shape of two little girls holding hands and moving across the road in their headlights."
"They saw them for so long that my step-dad was able to process the scene and sternly tell my mother not to steer suddenly, just to brake and not to attempt any huge steering movement."
"The forms reached the side of the road and faded away; our car slowed but didn't stop, and my parents continued their journey."
"When they related their encounter to my grandparents, whom we were visiting, they said that two young girls had been killed in a traffic accident on that same road."
– MagicSPA
That last one is the scariest in my mind!
While we have not all witnessed something that will forever keep us up at night, we've all seen or heard something that was terrifying.
And it seems the scarier it was, the harder it becomes to forget.
Redditor AncientTranslator405 asked:
"What's the scariest sound you've ever heard?"

- Due_Difference8575

- mel2mdl
An Accident's Aftermath
"Two years ago, I witnessed a near-fatal accident. A truck t-boned a small sedan with kids in it."
"I'll never forget that sound of the crunch, the mom crying hysterically because she thought her kids were dead, and the sight of it all."
"The worst part is I knew the kids. They were students of mine. Everyone survived but not without permanent injuries."
- amahler03
Living with Dementia
"One thing my grandmother did when she was near the end of her dementia was to call out, 'Mama, Mama' in a long and drawn out 'Maaaaaaammaaaa.'"
"She passed in 2007, and now my mom lives with us and is also suffering from dementia. I was awakened one night by the same long drawn out 'Maaaaaammaaaaa...'"

"The day before she passed, she sat up all of a sudden after being asleep basically for the entire previous week."
"She looked at me, a tear rolled down her face, and she said, 'Take care.'"

Waiting for the Inevitable
"Sudden screeching car tires behind you."
"A few years ago, we were sitting at a stop sign and got rear-ended by a girl texting on her phone (going 60 miles per hour) and it was the scariest three seconds of my life. My two-year-old son was in the back seat too."
"We had been at the lake and had bags piled up, so we couldn’t really see out the back window, and all of a sudden, there was the sound of LOUD screeching tires erupting behind us."
"I just knew I was about to die while I waited a couple of seconds for it to hit us. Thank god it wasn’t a semi-truck or something."
- masterpate
A Mechanical Error
"A CNC machine I was operating made a horrifying screeching noise as it dropped a 10-inch saw blade and fired it at me. Nearly lost my leg that day, it missed the main artery in my leg by two millimeters."
"I still get PTSD dreams where I hear it screech, bang, and it whistling toward/through me."
- natha134
Storm of the Century
"My husband and I were awakened by a thunderstorm so loud and physical that we thought it was an earthquake, and a strong one. It was extremely loud and shook the house and everything in it, and the rumble that woke us up lasted for probably 10 seconds."
"It was such a violent shake, I was thinking, 'This will be the earthquake that kills us.' I swore that the ground was going to open. It took several seconds to realize what it was."
"I only have experienced thunder like that a few other times in my life, and I grew up in a high-altitude part of the Pacific Northwest."
"Where I live now, we have a fault line, and they always go on about 'the big one' and how devastating it will be. So in my disorientation, I thought it was the beginning of the big one that had woken us."
- SapphireHaze
Someone Approaching
"I was standing in the middle of Death Valley at midnight several months ago, with no light or anything else around me, as I was taking pictures of the Milky Way."
"I suddenly heard footsteps approaching. I grabbed my camera and turned to run."
"It ended up being another photographer who had been sleeping near me and then woke up and came to talk with me. It took a good two hours for my heart to calm down."
- jscheel
Breaking In
"Someone breaking into my home is genuinely my worst nightmare. It doesn't help when you have a cat that likes to do zoomies in the middle of the night, either."
- PlayerAlert
A Child in Need
"Hearing my seven-year-old scream/wailing from their room at 2:00 AM. That eerie sound of fear and despair and hopelessness calling for someone to stop whatever is going on. Hearing it come closer and closer before you can even get out of the covers to check on them."
"Fortunately, it turned out their hand had fallen asleep and they thought it was a dead hand stuck in the pajamas. They stopped screaming as we were yelling 'What?! What?!'"
"'Oh. It's just my hand.'"
"Still the scariest sound I have ever heard. I have nightmares about it sometimes..."
- mel2mdl
Houseguests
"When I was 13, I was lying in bed, trying to fall asleep."
"I went to grab a drink of water from the bottle next to my bed, and my elbow bumped the wall next to it by accident."
"Almost immediately, a singular bump ‘responded’ from the other side of the wall."
"I froze, stared at the wall, and then knocked twice in the same spot."
"Two knocks responded a moment later."
"The other side of the wall was our lounge room. There was no one in there, and I know because I didn’t get another wink of sleep until the sun rose."
"Still freaks me out, and I occasionally knock the walls of my bedroom now, hoping I don’t hear anything knock back."
- Anxiety_bunni
While almost all of these sounds are explainable, if tragic or terrifying, they undoubtedly would keep someone thinking about them for a long time.
When I was 18, my brother and I drove out to a bridge that everyone in my hometown insists is haunted. I turned around to grab my phone from the backseat when I heard my brother cry out. To this day, he insists he saw a ghostly figure standing in front of him. I didn’t see it, but it’s still the scariest true story I know.
The world is full of scary things. Some of these things are supernatural. More often, they’re heartbreaking. Whatever the case, everyone has that one scary, true story to tell.
Redditors certainly do, and they were more than happy to share when Redditor Littel_Chubb asked:
"What the scariest true story you know?"
Reanimation
"My dad worked in a morgue in during college in the 60’s. One time on the night shift he was training a recent hire who was wheeling a body down the hallway. The body was under a sheet but all of a sudden started to sit up. The guy immediately freaked out, ran out the doors and quit."
"Apparently a dead body can have muscle contractions in the abs causing it to start sitting up. The more you know I guess"
– PJammas41
"My uncle was a mortician. Once a body reached up to slap him when he started the embalming process. Same thing - just a muscle contraction, but it freaked him out."
– jhope71
A Shattered Worldview
"I grew up in a funeral home. I helped out in the office. When I was about 15, we got a call from a man whose wife and infant baby had been murdered in cold blood."
"There were very few clues. It made headlines. Cops set up surveillance at the viewing. It was heartbreaking, as the mother was holding the baby in her arms."
"I was asked to take the flower cards and periodically get the husband and ask if he recognized the names. I then photocopied them and put them back. I did it because I was a “kid,” people knew me, and I was unobtrusive."
"I talked to the husband quite a bit. He seemed devastated and shaken."
"The cops told me they had an eyewitness to someone leaving the house the day of the murder."
"The witness was a three year old girl. She recognized the man leaving. It was the husbands best friend."
"Turns out that the friend and the husband had made a pact to kill each other’s families and run off with their secretaries. The little girl identified the friend, and I guess one of them cracked."
"They both went to jail on multiple counts, all on the testimony of a three year old."
"I still cannot believe to this day that that man stood right beside me, multiple times, and I had NO CLUE."
"I don’t think I ever looked at life the same way after that."

Truly Man's Best Friend
"My great aunt woke up in the middle of the night, she heard her dog making these low growls. She was single at the time and living alone in her ranch style home. She walked out to her living room to check things out. She didn’t see or hear anything out of the ordinary, so she decided to make sure her door and front windows were locked. Door was locked, first window she checked was locked. When she lifted the mini blind on the second window, it was wide open and a guy in a ski mask was standing there. She said he laughed this evil laugh and said “party time” then he started to climb in. She screamed that she had a gun, her dog started barking his head off. My aunt did get a gun after that and learned how to use it."
"I can’t even think about what would’ve happened to her if she didn’t have her dog to warn her :( "
– belai437
Never Truly Know Anyone
"I lived next to a murderer. Faye Swetlik was 6 years old when she was kidnapped out of her front yard. It was all over the news. I had news crews, cops, even the FBI all over my townhouse complex. My fiancée and I met with the FBI 3 times. They searched our home and everything. I remember clear as day, my fiancée FaceTimed me as the cops were digging through the trash cans directly in front of my townhouse. They pulled out her boot and a bloody knife. Then they found her body, dumped maybe 300 feet from my house. He had watched them find the murder weapon. Dumb*ss put it in a trash bag along with his other mail. He went to his back porch and opened his own throat. It’s crazy. I had conversations with the guy. I never knew he was a psycho. This all happened a year ago."
– SCRhyperior
A Tragic Accident
"I'm sure everyone has already hit on the pop culture ones, so I'll go personal. I grew up on a ranch, raising large hoofstock and poultry. Over the winter, we would buy hay from a neighbor and store it in the barn. Something like 80 tons. We get a call one summer from the hay guy's wife, in hysterics, that we have to find another hay guy, because her husband was crushed by the baler. These weren't cowgirl bales, but half-ton ones. She told us the baler had gotten twine snarled under the tilt table that slides complete bales off. He hopped off the tractor, wriggled on in under the table to reach the twine, as he had undoubtedly done many times before, only for the tilt to collapse backwards with a mostly complete bale on it. Pancake from the hips, up. Mom had nightmares about my dad getting killed in a similar manner for months"

DNA Doesn't Lie
"This one kid back in the early 20th century named Bobby Dunbar. He went missing, and after like a year of searching for him, his parents came across a man with a kid who looked a lot like Bobby. They believed it was their kid, and after a legal battle with the kid’s supposed mother, they brought the kid home. A while parade happened due to the missing kid’s return. He lived and died believing he was, in fact, Bobby Dunbar."
"Well, a few decades later, his granddaughter asked Bobby’s (nephew I think?) for a DNA sample so she could see if her and Bobby’s nephew were related. Turns out, they weren’t. Meaning the real Bobby Dunbar is still missing and, probably died alone without his parents."

Absolutely Disgusting
"So this isn’t necessarily a horror story. Okay, it kind of is. It was a definitely a nightmare inducing experience."
"So this was years ago. One evening my brother is getting ready for bed, and he had a retainer he was supposed to wear to bed."
"Now here’s the thing. My brother is a clean freak. Especially with personal hygiene. He actually has some minor OCD with personal hygiene rituals, and he’s gotten better as he’s gotten older, but the point is, he is rigorous about personal hygiene."
"So my brother was getting ready for bed and opens the sealed container where he keeps his retainer after he washes it every morning and pops his retainer into his mouth."
"And he feels it start wiggling."
"So he pops it out of his mouth like WTF, and there’s a GIANT MAGGOT in his retainer."
"No freaking clue how it could have possibly gotten into his retainer case. He threw the retainer away."
– Squirrelgirl25
Close Up Those Doggy Doors
"Happened to my boss’s best friend when they were around 17yo:"
"Best friend’s parents were out of town one weekend and she had the house to herself. Went about her business having dinner, watching tv then decided to go to bed. She was lying in her bed with her back to her closet when she heard the door open. She somehow pretended to be asleep - the man who was hiding in the closet walked around her bed to the side she was laying/facing, gently stroked her hair and face then left. She immediately called her boyfriend to ask him to come over then called her parents and then the police. Long story short this man had been getting into their home via a doggy door (they didn’t have a dog and didn’t bother to secure it) and he’d been living in a tent in the foresty area behind their home for months to creep on her. They found a ton of surveillance footage of her sleeping and pieces of her clothes and stuff."
"If I recall correctly this happened somewhere in Alabama, most likely mid-2000s."

The Relief!
"That's scary."
"My godson's parents couldn't find him for hours one afternoon / evening and started to panic. They called family close by to help look, and eventually called the police."
"Turns out he climbed between his mattress and box spring playing hide and seek with his brother and fell asleep."
"He woke up when his parents were talking to the cops in the kitchen and just kind of walked in like, "what's everyone so upset about?""

That one made me smile. We need a funny one after all that scary!
Evil walks among us.
That is a difficult fact of life.
Not everybody is a good person.
I'm trying to not be one of those people on the news who "never would've thought!"
But now and again, we're gonna end up surprised and sad.
So let's discuss the people who shooketh us.
Redditor rentinghappiness wanted to know about times we've all faced down darkness. They asked:
"Who is the most evil person you’ve ever met?"
I have met too many evil people in my days.
See! ALWAYS BRUSH!!
steve martin laughing GIFGiphy"My 3 cousins went to a dentist that they found really unsettling but couldn’t pinpoint why."
"Fast forward a while, my older cousin of the three was working as an ER receptionist a few years back when a patient was rushed in very close to death after a dental appointment. My cousin found out quickly he’d come in from their old dentist for a standard tooth removal, i think 2 teeth, that should’ve taken 30 mins."
"He was in the back for TWO HOURS with his wife constantly checking in before she demanded to go back and found the dentist had completely snapped and removed ALL OF HIS TEETH and he was very near death after being under way longer than he should have. Still scares me to this day."

Daddy Issues
"Not sure about the most but my father is definitely up there spent my childhood with me my mother and older brother being beaten. Then when my brother got older and he was too big for my father to hit he started putting my brother down making him feel worthless which led to him leaving at age sixteen."
"Then my mother and I started getting the brunt of his moods and there was nothing I could do about it because he was bigger than me. But then one day when I was seventeen I realised that I was now bigger than him. I didn't hit him but being able to finally shove him away from my mother made me feel like a horrible darkness had subsided."

Good for You
"My mum had an awful ex boyfriend after she divorced my dad. He used to hit her and once he came round our house where we (me and my four brothers and sisters - all very little at the time) lived and threw a brick through our window. After she left him, he used to stare out the window at me when I walked to school and shout really gross things at me."
"I’d never done anything to this man ever. One time I was in town after school with my friends, and he saw me and shouted ‘sl*t’ at me. I flipped him the finger and walked off. He called my school and told them I’d given him the finger whilst I was in my uniform. I got called into the heads office the next day."
"She was known to be very strict and formidable and really scary. I told her what happened and how he was constantly harassing me and this stern, super posh old lady said ‘good for you, If he comes near you again let me know and we’ll call the police together’. I was stunned because I was terrified of her."

Leave me Alone...
"My sister's recent ex-boyfriend is a huge narcissist and after stabbing himself in the leg as a manipulation tactic, my sister left him and filed a restraining order. Somehow he managed to steal ALL of my sisters stuff including our deceased Grandpa's sweatshirt that got given to my sister and took her dogs ashes as well. He managed to do all this avoiding even going to her house because he paid somebody else to (showed up on the ring camera)."
"He did this to avoid any evidence. He keeps texting and calling my sister in hopes to have her talk to him which would then void the restraining order. He got in with somebody at her work and had him tell her that 'He's closer than you think.' All of this has made my sister genuinely fear for her life so she moved back in with our parents."

Die Slowly
"My ex-step father. Put my family through hell. Abusive in every manner. A total piece of sh*t. He managed to flee the country before he was arrested. To this day he is the only person I've ever met where I truly hope he dies a slow agonizing painful death. And that's all I'm going to say about it."

We are truly living amongst demons. Good Lord.
The Leader
"One of our regular customers at the grocery store where I used to work. Really cold guy. Never smiled. You'd try to engage in small talk with him at the checkout and you'd get nothing back. It turned out later he'd turned his family into a kind of cult."
"He had multiple kids with his own daughters and nieces. When the cops came to his house to take his kids away from him, he barricaded himself inside and killed nine of his kids. Just an absolutely evil man."

HIM
"Jonathon Bruce. He killed 2 kids with a pitchfork in Merced California back in the early 2000s. I went to high school with his little sister, and shared a room with him at a big church event my freshman year."

Finally he left...
"I spent a long time working with young offenders, I've also spent 4 years working in a children's home. All in I think I've worked with about 10 children who went on to commit murder. Only 2 would I say were truly evil. One lad I worked with in a children's home took a real disliking to me. Was always making threats to kill me. Not that unusual in this line of work and something I would normally shrug off."
"But this lad I believed he meant it. Thankfully he was moved on quite quickly. A few years later this teenage girl went missing, turns out she was his girlfriend at the time. As soon as I heard this I knew he had killed her. Turns out he did some pretty horrific stuff to her before murdering her. I won't go in to detail."

Speak Up
"A woman I used to know was complaining that when she went to a child's funeral the mother was crying too much and too loudly and it was 'embarrassing.' Said the mother didn't deserve to cry because she (only loosely connected to the family) was not scheduled to give a speech during the funeral."

The Bill Collector
"Was a bill collector for a department store. Called on an overdue account, well-dressed guy and lovely lady came and paid cash. A few days later I saw his photo in the newspaper. He killed his wife and kids by burning down the house. Woman who came in with to pay the debt was not his wife. Later found out he was a serial killer but was amazed at how cool and attractive he was. Why he paid that bill was a mystery."

He was super brutal...
"An old friend of mine got into drug dealing as a teen and steadily grew in power into adulthood. I had heard he was behind some deaths and beatings, at times personally doing it and other times ordering it. Dude could turn from cool to enraged in an instant, and he never regretted anything he did. He was super brutal."
"Around me he would essentially revert to himself when we were best friends from the ages of 9 to 11. I remember once I ran into him at a local bar/restaurant and he lit up, asked me to go to the arcade nearby to play games on him, so I obliged. I'll never forget a couple of his goons joining us just standing around as we played games, and one of them came over with some news and my old friend turned red and shouted 'I don't care, handle it, I am playing f**king games!!'"
"Dude could turn a whole room cold and make everyone stop laughing with a glare, was spooky, especially having known him before he became that person. He was shot to death with an uzi by a guy on a motorcycle passing by at a local bar, they never found the shooter and it was a suspected professional hit."

Sorry Mom
"Harold Shipman was my mother’s family doctor for a while. I met him once when he made a house visit to check on her after a minor operation. He was very friendly and polite but I still wonder to this day what would have happened if I hadn’t been there. Luckily my mother moved to another area shortly afterwards."

BALLIHURTON
"I worked for a guy that worked as a subcontractor for a company that rhymed with Ballihurton. We rented land from a 90 year old farmer that still raised bulls to sell. We'd dump oilfield waste on that property and ended up noticing the cows getting sick and dying. Was more expensive to properly dispose of it. They'd step over a dollar to save a dime."
"The business was a shell of a shell company, if anything happened "OH NOT BALLIHURTON, HOW DARE YOU X EXCAVATION SERVICES" Nah we cleaned up oilfield waste and disposed it in the absolute cheapest way possible. My boss was the most ruthless person I'd ever met willing to do literally anything to make/save a single dollar."

She's Gone
"My old boss. She came into our store and bullied three people out of their jobs (including me) so she could hire her friends. It was maybe 5 years ago and I still think of it sometimes and get angry, because you really can't do anything, or at least I couldn't. She got a promotion afterwards and runs the flagship in LA + the Hawaii branch. Sad to see so many people lost their jobs because she doesn't care about how her actions affect other people."

Stay in Prison
"My daughter's ex-boyfriend that tried killing her when their baby (who was in the room) was 6 weeks old. He strangled her and the ER said she was second away from dying. He's currently serving his 3rd prison sentence for domestic violence. He hurts another women every time he gets out of prison."

Back Off
"Drew Peterson. Yes, the serial killer. I was waiting for a friend of my parent's and the sleezeball wouldn't quit hitting on me. He quit when my parent's friend (a fellow cop) walked in and we had dinner."

“drop off”
"I used to know a pimp who bragged to me about beating two murder charges, offered me money for my girlfriend, and explained how he would 'drop off' his girls in the woods when they didn’t want to work anymore. It was heavily implied that they were no longer alive when he dropped them off. He later went on to kill his cousin, one of my best friends, in the exact same way he had committed the first two murders."
"Currently he’s in county jail, but not for any murder charges. Worst part is I don’t think he’s the most evil person I’ve been around, he was just the most open about it. He was cold as hell and charismatic as f**k. Almost a perfect psychopath if he hadn’t been such a severe addict."

Trickster
"Used to work for a chained grocery store on the East Coast. The stores would always ask for donations to some cancer charity. The donation money never went to the charity and ended up going to one of the executives to buy himself a new swimming pool at his mansion. Nothing was ever done about it and the guy ended up passing away from some rare disease - amyloidosis. Seems rather evil to trick people like that."

Well that is all disturbing. Evil never dies.
