Words of wisdom can come in many forms.
"What is the one quote that changed your life?"
These mantras may help you have no regrets.
Cookie Wisdom
"If you always do what you've always done, you'll always get what you've always gotten."
"It was a fortune cookie."
Meaning Of Life
"life isn't about finding yourself, it's about creating yourself."
Be In The Moment
"If you're living in the past, you're depressed, if you're living in the future you have anxiety, if you are living in the present you are at peace."
"It's just from memory I'm sure the actual quote is much prettier."
Learning lessons is the name of the game here.
Value Of Stupid
"'It costs money to be stupid.' My dad, after I had done something stupid and was forced to use all of my summer earnings to pay for it."
Slice Of Humble Pie
"You might be the ripest, juiciest peach in the world, but some people just don't like peaches."
Take A Leap
"You only need to do it once to understand."
"Context: My coach once said this after I was scared of trying some new tumbling moves and constantly kept giving up mid attempts. It got stuck to my head in a really interesting way, not only on gymnastics but on everything that I do. If I'm scared, bored, angry about something I need to do I just reflect on how I need to stop giving myself excuses and do the things I must."
"Right after he said that I did it. It was horrible, unbalanced, barely ended up on my feet. But I lost my fear of doing it."
The way we treat others, good and bad, have ramifications.
Ensuring A Promising Future
"A society grows great when old men plant trees whose shade they know they shall never sit in."
There Are Limits To Extending Kindness
"Don't set yourself on fire to keep someone else warm."
A throwaway comment my driving instructor once told me that stuck with me was to drive defensively.
We can't predict how well other drivers around us will maneuver their vehicles when sharing the road. The only way to be safe is to remain alert and to think ahead.
I thought this also applied in a larger context in life.
Being self-reliant, I thought, was key to survival on the highways of life, since no one is really looking out for you. Be in control. Don't live life always idling. And occasionally live life in the fast lane, safely, of course.
People Share Famous Quotes Often Misused By Not Using The Full Quotation
It's amazing how the entire meaning of a quote can change with just a few additional words. Some people like to exclude these words to make the quote fit their narrative, but these Redditors know the truth. Keep reading for an eye-opening experience.
u/olChum_69 asked: What are some famous quotes people misuse by not using the full quote?
Machiavelli
Machiavelli: "It is better to be feared than loved, if you cannot be both. "
"I want people to be afraid of how much they love me." -Michael Scott
The love of...
GiphyMoney is the root of all evil. The actual verse reads "the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil."
I like the actual verse much more. I always thought money and wealth itself isn't inherently bad, but the desire/love for it can be.
Unlucky.
"The race is not (always) to the swift".
The full quote is: "the race is not to the swift, not the battle to the strong, neither yet bread to the wise, nor yet riches to men of understanding, nor yet favour to men of skill; but time and chance happeneth to them all."
The point isn't so much that persistence is sometimes enough to overcome skill, but rather that sometimes everyone is unlucky.
Richard III
"Now is the winter of our discontent."
Actual quote: "Now is the winter of our discontent made glorious summer by this sun of York."
The "now" modifies "made", not "is". Richard III is describing a good thing, that the "seasons are changing" for him and things are looking up. Basically the complete opposite of what you get by stopping half way through the quote.
If wrong, to be set right.
Giphy"My country, right or wrong."
People use it to justify blind patriotism and ignoring the bad things that their country does but forget the rest of the quote: "if right, to be kept right; and if wrong, to be set right."
Still true.
"History repeats itself. First as tragedy, then as farce."
People often forget the second part!
Nietzsche
"God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him. How shall we comfort ourselves, the murderers of all murderers? What was holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet owned has bled to death under our knives: who will wipe this blood off us? What water is there for us to clean ourselves? What festivals of atonement, what sacred games shall we have to invent? Is not the greatness of this deed too great for us? Must we ourselves not become gods simply to appear worthy of it?"
-Nietzsche
The full quote is not nearly as cut and dry as the first sentence. Much more thoughtful than celebratory.
Bootstraps.
Giphy"To pull yourself up by your bootstraps" was initially meant to imply doing the impossible.
Fun fact: the original meaning is also why computers 'boot'.
In the early days when you turn a computer on, how do you ready it for reading instructions? There are no instructions running to tell it to interpret the code that will tell it how to run code to tell it...etc.. So a program is needed that effectively pulls the computer up by its own bootstraps, without the need for user input and thus bootstrapping became a term, later shortened to boot.
Rome wasn't built...
Might as well be that person who points this quote out.
"Rome wasn't built in a day [the forgotten part] but it burned in one."
Ah the classic spin on 'It takes years to build trust but only a moment to destroy it.'
Al Capone
Don't mistake my kindness for weakness.
The full quote:
"Don't mistake my kindness for weakness. I am kind to everyone, but when someone is unkind to me, weak is not what you are going to remember about me." -- Al Capone
Not necessarily misused, but I think the full quote is so much more.
Wife Files For Divorce Hoping Husband Will Fight It And Reconcile, And He's Not Sure How To Proceed
Redditor gonewild9676 has found himself in quite the predicament. His wife had a few ideas regarding their marriage and now he's a bit perplexed, to say the least.Take a listen...
I'm confused, torn, and a mess right now. We've been married for 11 years, and for the last year she has been all but shunning me. She asked for space, I've given it to her. She's had a friend with at least an emotional affair.
We've had marriage counseling that went nowhere. It seems like every olive branch I've extended to her has been shot off. I've been raising our 8 year old almost as a single father for the past year. She's been sleeping in another room and locking herself in it. She's been coming home late and pretending I don't exist. She sold her business late last year and hasn't worked a steady gig since. She has a STEM degree and experience running a business, so she can get a decent job.
Last year I was working at a toxic company and knew my job was in jeopardy. Frankly I was a nervous mess, but was hoping to finish one last project and bail, but was laid off with a nice severance. Meanwhile I've landed a new gig at a much nicer company.
Anyways, a few weeks ago she ended counseling and filed for divorce. Then last night I got a call from a friend who said she broke down and said she didn't really want it she thought I'd fight it.
I don't really want one, but if she wants out I'm not holding her hostage. She went through all kinds of abuse as a kid and I figured I triggered something and she had checked out of the marriage. I've talked to several people and they came to that decision and that she's kind of lost in life right now. Frankly if the divorce goes through she's getting the short stick in the deal. Maybe cold feet?
I'm willing to go talk with the friend and her with an open mind. What's the best way for me to navigate this? On one side I'm sick of her treatment of me. On the other side we had 10 really good years and I'd rather not split custody of our daughter. How should I handle this?
My wife has filed for divorce but told a friend she doesn't really want one. What do I do?
