The term "fan" is believed to be derived from "fanatic" or "fanatical.
Meaning "a person filled with excessive and single-minded zeal".
Indeed, some fans simply can't hide their excitement for their favorite franchises, sports teams, recording artists, or political figures, no matter how hard they try.
Resulting in the birth of such monikers as "Trekkies", "Beliebers", or "Cumberb*tches."
And while these passionate, some might say obsessive, fan bases often find compatriots at conventions, premieres and meet-ups, those unfamiliar with the apples of their respective eyes might be confused by their level of fandom, if not down right annoyed.

There's nothing wrong being a fan of someone or something, no matter how fanatical you get.
Though it would be in everyone's best interest to learn how to temper those feelings around others, as not everyone will share your passionate feelings.
Just ask any Yankees fan who's dared to wear their team's cap in Boston...
Meeting a celebrity is a dream come true moment. We think about these people even when we don't mean to. It's al part of the fantasy. Celebrities are the illusive finds we want to understand and study. However, they are just simply mere mortals, but often it takes meeting them face to face to understand that. They always say... "never meet your dream fantasy!" It can be a tricky situation but it can also be a life highlight... especially when they are great people.

Gordon!
GiphyBumped into Gordon Ramsay in the lift in a hotel in Hong Kong. He was very friendly. We didn't talk to him or ask for a picture. I just blurted out "You're Gordon Ramsay!" and he acknowledged and smiled. He insisted on us going first because we had our suitcases with us, wished us a nice day, said bye several times when we saw him in the lobby again. Very friendly! Turicus
Good Service.
All of these were waiting tables:
Waited on Gene Wilder for his birthday years ago, he was incredibly nice and laughed so hard he cried when I told him we had "everlasting pistachio" ice cream.
Betty White was hilarious and tipsy after wine and would not stop flirting. If I had been 60 years older....
NPH was also gracious as humanly possibly, insisted we have a drink with his table while we waited on him, and tipped like a champ.
Seth McFarlane was amazing. Drew me an original cartoon and signed it there at the table. After paying and tipping 100% he refused to let me buy him a shot of whiskey and instead bought me one, then invited us to meet him out later. aestusveritas
Good John.
I was working on a set once where John C. Reilly acted as one of the main characters. It was a pretty small set and low budget (not even sure if the show ever aired) so we all found ourselves working closely together for the most part.
I sat across from him during lunch one day and we chatted for a bit about random stuff.
The guy talks the same way he acts, which is why I think he plays such a great character in any comedy because he quite literally plays his own attitude in many roles.... at least it seems.
But anyway he was a very nice and down to earth guy, I found it hard not to giggle every time he spoke because I just couldn't shake the image in my head of all the roles he's played. tommyboy6733
"hey, you're the quietest kid ever, don't you talk?"
GiphyI met John Candy on a plane when I was a little kid while traveling with my family. He was a big man. He had the whole row to himself in front of us with the armrest up between seats so he could be more comfortable. The stewardesses were blocking anyone from coming up and bothering him, even though they themselves were not exactly leaving him alone what with talking to him constantly and laughing at his enjoyable banter the whole trip.
At some point he got up to go to the bathroom. When he came back he looked at me, pretended to do a double-take like he was surprised and said , "hey, you're the quietest kid ever, don't you talk?" The way he said it was so friendly that I just smiled and giggled. Then he had a pleasant conversation with my parents, who had been DYING to talk to him the entire flight, but were too polite to bother him.
Not even 2 weeks later we heard he had passed. starstarstar42
Laurie!!!
Jamie Lee Curtis was one of the sweetest people I've ever met, bar none and easily the nicest celeb I met working the camera. Very considerate and thoughtful person. She kept checking with us to see if she could do anything for us or if we needed any more shots she could help with. Great sense of humor too. tikikatt
Helen the Great!
GiphyA few years ago Helen Mirren came to my job. I worked as a weekend hostess at a Ukrainian diner in NYC's the East Village, and very famous for its pierogis. I didn't know who Helen Mirren was at the time, and as it was a busy Saturday brunch, I asked for her name, put it on the wait list and let her know it would be 20 minutes. She just stood off to the side and talked with her two other companions.
Never bothered me. Never demanded to be seated sooner. Never brought up her celebrity status. Customers kept coming up and asked if that was THE Helen Mirren. My boss eventually made me seat her before everyone else. Helen looked at her watch and remarked it hadn't been 20 minutes! All in all, Hellen Mirren 10/10 lovely person. la-noche-viene
See Adam Run!
I ran into Adam Sandler outside of a Planet Fitness in Brooklyn in early 2016.
As I was leaving the Planet Fitness, it looked like he was walking in. We made eye contact, so I stopped and held the door for him. He got to the door and stopped right before he walked through, in one of those fake poses that little kids make when you tell them to freeze. I stood there holding the door, plenty confused.
For about five seconds, we just stood there- him, motionless and I, standing there holding the door. Finally, he turned his head and said in the stereotypical Adam Sandler voice, "Ahhh, who we kidding? I'm not going in there!" Giant grin on his face. We both laughed and then he continued down the street.
Awesome. WatchTheBoom

Met Colin Mochrie at some obscure convention in my city. He actually talked to us for a few minutes and I basically just fan-girled about Whose Line and Royal Canadian Airforce. Really great guy, he has my absolute respect. slackbabbith
Talk to me Bill....
For a couple years I went to a private school in Connecticut. My last year there, Bill Murray's sons transferred in. Neither was in my grade, but one of them was in the play with me. I was super nervous, but I was an SNL fan my whole life and had the 20th anniversary book that talked about all the cast members and behind the scenes stuff. After the show I (really shyly) said hi and told him I was a fan and asked him to sign it.
He said "whoa! I haven't even seen this yet! Cool!" and then told the biggest lie ever told and said I was good in the show (I was awful, I forgot all my lines).
Weirdly, this wasn't the first time I saw him. When I was about 6 we were at a restaurant in new jersey and he and his wife were at another table. Ghostbusters had just come out and I wanted to say hi but my parents stopped me.
Nice dude. LeastCleverNameEver
"Ok. So he is kind of a Baldwin!"
GiphyI met Paul Rudd on a flight from NY, sat next too him on the plane. My buddy leaned over and told me that he wanted to compliment him on this band shirt he wore when making Clueless, but he "didn't want it to be weird." So his solution was to write him a note and slip it to him, lol.
So he does this, and Paul just gets this nervous look on his face, opens the note and reads it. Starts cracking up laughing, leaned over to us and said "best note ever." He then told us the whole story of the shirt, how he fought with the costume dept about it because it was the shirt he wore to set that day. We talked the whole flight, dude was super cool. _Glibnik_
Robin.
GiphyWhen I was younger, my grandmother and I ran into Robin Williams eating alone in a Whole Foods. We approached him and introduced ourselves and he immediately cleared a space for us to sit and chat with him. I was pretty young at the time, so he spent most of the time trying to make me laugh by doing voices.
I may have been too young to truly appreciate it at the time, but looking back I can easily say it's one of the greatest moments of my life and Robin has always had a special spot in my heart because of it. barkleyhound

Samuel L. Jackson at the Calgary stampede in Canada. He was super nice. My family went up for it because my uncle is part of the committee that organizes the stampede every year and he got us VIP seating. I was a kid at the time and I was like does your wallet really say OBAMF? He laughed and said he left that one at home. Of course when I told the story at school I told everyone his wallet did in fact say that. nokarma4ulolz
Vin.
I met Vin Diesel at a truck stop diner when I was a kid.
It was like 4 in the morning and me, my grandpa and vin and his friend were the only ones in the diner, and we ended up getting sat at the table next to them.
Vin and a friend were getting ready to go on some fishing trip which was made obvious by the clothes they were wearing.
My grandpa struck up a conversation about fishing with him, completely oblivious to who he was. He was a really nice guy and apparently knew a great deal about fishing techniques.
I was a bit geeked out and didn't say much or contribute to the conversation but I spent the next hour of our road trip explaining to my grandpa who vin diesel was and why it was a huge deal we just met him. weekendbrainsurgeon
"What's going on fellas?"
GiphyMet Dave Chappelle a few years back. Long story short, a friend of a friend got me and two friends into an after party. We were sitting at the bar when his manager offered us some shots. We talked with his manager for a while. Then Dave sat down near us. Dave was kind of sitting by himself and he looks over at us and goes "What's going on fellas?" And we talk to him for about an hour. We thanked him for coming to our town, talked about music, sports, all kinds of stuff. Super cool dude. One of my favorite memories. nstb21
Don.
My husband and I were wandering around Philly a few years ago and Don Cheadle was walking toward us. We both stopped and turned as we watched him go by. After he passed us he turned around with a big smile and waved/winked.
I just thought that was pretty cool. Janisneptunus
Gentle Neil.
When I was a teenager, I met Neil Armstrong at a retirement ceremony that my dad brought me to. It was at a museum and it was a private event. There was time for everyone to wander the museum, and my dad saw Mr. Armstrong looking at one of the planes that my dad helped design. Nobody else around. They struck up a conversation and Neil asked me questions about what I was studying and how I felt about the work my dad did (my dad worked on classified planes when I was much younger). He seemed like such a gentle guy to me.
A bunch of other men suddenly joined as and started asking him for autographs, which he declined. It seemed to snap him out of his happy mood, and he kind of shut down and walked away. At that time I thought he was a bit of a jerk for not saying goodbye or anything, but I recently read about the hard time he had with fame, and I guess it makes sense. rain-dog2
Blessed Tea.
Went with my parents to a function for some charity group and we shared a table with Ice-T. Super nice guy, down to earth and not high on himself. He has a mouth on him but when he found out my Dad is a retired preacher never heard a bad word again the rest of the night. I ended up talking music and how he goes from Rap to Metal. Man is cool and knows his stuff about the metal and Punk scene. Gundamsafety
Dwayne.
GiphyMy mom and sister met The Rock when he was still a wrestler. They had a couple car seats and tons of bags having a heck of a time getting off the plane and people were waiting and then this massive guy offered to carry some things for them and they happily took the help, he grabbed some bags and held the baby carrier with my niece in it and helped them off the plane and left. After people kept going up to them asking how they knew The Rock and they were very confused until someone explained who he was. sendgoodmemes
'Star Wars' Fan Loses It At 'Rise Of Skywalker' Screening, Punches Man In The Face For Using His Phone
There is nothing more frustrating than a lit smartphone distracting you during a movie in a darkened theater, especially at a screening for the highly anticipated Star Wars Episode IX: Rise of Skywalker.
Crowds flocked to theaters to catch the final installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy when it opened during the week of Christmas.
Although the J. J. Abrams-helmed production received mixed reviews, it still grossed over $377 million so far, and people lined up to see their favorite characters on the silver screen for one last time (that we know of).
One thing is certain, the force is strong with diehard Star Wars fans, and they will not let anything ruin it for them.
Audiences at a screening of Rise in Canada's Scotiabank Vancouver Theatre witnessed a violent disruption among them during the movie.
This is what happens when you give in to the dark side.
Cinema Patron Loses His Patience Over Phone || ViralHog youtu.be
Joe Bond and his wife went to the 7:30 p.m. screening and found himself in the crosshairs of the irate Star Wars super fan, seen in the clip above, when he pulled out his cellphone.
Bond knew something was off when he first spotted the irate moviegoer, who had "aggressively" asked to find his seat.
With the exception of an emergency, audience members should abide by the protocol of turning off their cellphones during the movie.
Bond told Global News that one audience member foolishly tried to film the opening credits of the movie on his phone and immediately experienced the wrath of the cantankerous super fan.
Soon after the movie started, a man screamed at his neighbor and allegedly punched him in the face for daring to ch… https://t.co/JUOj1IH8U7— DC⚡️101 (@DC⚡️101) 1577722956.0
But then, Bond felt the phone vibrating in his pocket.
He and his wife were on a rare night out after the birth of their second child. As a father, his instinct was to check his phone in case the babysitter was trying to reach him.
Said Bond:
"I thought I was getting a phone call from our baby sitter."
"It was the first time my wife and I had been on a date with both our kids being looked after, so I pulled out my phone really discreetly to see if it was the baby sitter calling. It wasn't, so I put it back."
Unfortunately, the unidentified super fan saw this and became furious.
Bond said the angry man "just kind of lost it" and brought his fist to Bond's face at light speed.
"I told him to calm down, and he didn't calm down, and then he hit me in the face."
"There was a lot of people filming the situation because it was pretty hilarious."
It became such a disruption, employees had to stop the movie to escort the outraged patron out of the theater.
The house lights came on as the audience boo'd at the man and chanted, "out, out, out."
He berated his hecklers by declaring his passion for Star Wars.
"I am a real 'Star Wars' fan!"
He continued screaming and waved his cellphone to emphasize a point.
"Turn your phones off! Turn your phones off!" Use your f - - king heads! Welcome to the 21st century! I waited a goddamned year to see this so some a - - hole can turn his phone on next to me?!"

Scotia Bank spokeswoman Sarah Van Lange wrote in an emailed statement:
"Luckily, the Force was strong with the cineplex team who ended up rewinding the film for the remaining guests."
"They got a round of applause out of appreciation from the fans!"
According to Rotten Tomatoes, Rise of Skywalker received a score of 57%, while fans rated the final installment in the franchise higher with an 86% rating.
Much like the mixed critical reviews, people were divided over the events that unfolded at the screening in Vancouver, with some vouching for the super fan's meltdown and others, not so much.

Fans Share Which Famous Person's Death Affected Them Most, And We're Stocking Up On Tissues
Death is inevitable. We're all going to go through it. It's never easy. There is a thing about when certain famous people die though. Singers, actors, writers... it can be heartbreaking.... more than the demise of a family member. Artists help define us. When they go... a piece of us, a piece of our past and present goes with them. And it can be life altering.
Redditor u/Ritzaficionado needed for all of us to share... What famous persons death affected you most and why?
It's all too random...
GiphyAnton Yelchin, the guy who played Chekov in the new Star Trek movies. Why? Because I liked that guy, he seemed like he had a good career ahead of him and one day he was out in his driveway and his car unexpectedly rolled down his driveway pinning him against a wall. He died. He died, standing there, at 27 years old, with the whole world ahead of him, pinned by his own car, in the middle of the day. Not being rich, or happy, or liked could save him. Life is completely scary and anything could happen. It reminded me I need to appreciate what and who I have and try to not be such a complainer about everything. stylophonics
This one hurts!
Alan Rickman was probably the first celebrity death I mourned. While other deaths have shocked or saddened me, Rickman's was just...different, somehow. Llamageddon24

Say no to drugs!
GiphyIt's going to sound dumb, but Anna Nicole Smith. Yes she was a drug-addled floozy who sold herself to the highest bidder, but I always felt sorry for her. She was young and beautiful and everyone used her and abused her for fame and money. She was at her lowest point in life and they kept the cameras rolling the whole time.
I think she just wanted to be loved and to get away from the poverty she grew up in. She may have gone about it the wrong way, and that was all on her, but she was young and uneducated. I bet she felt like she had to do whatever the producers said in order to survive. AnnieB512
Mr. President...
I saw John F. Kennedy as he drove past my house when I was a little girl and remember feeling excited about his presidency. His assassination was devastating to me even as a child. The country was riveted to the TV. It was real life drama and was all anyone talked about. beyondtheridge
Nirvana!!!
Kurt Cobain, I was really into Nirvana back in the day. ripgressor1974
Tough one for me. I was all in on Grunge (still love it) and our Squadron in the Air Force made a flight patch called "Smells like teen spirit" with a tiger cub (our squadron mascot) on a leash tied to a teen girl. Not good form and we had to get rid of them, but illustrates Nirvana's impact at that time.
A year after his suicide, my wife and I got free tix to Seattle. We saw old concert promos for Nirvana ($5!) at the Central and just wished we had been in Seattle in the late 80s early 90s to experience that energy. We went to his house where he ended his life and it was really emotional to see the place you saw on TV where he did the deed. In hind site, we shouldn't have gone, but felt compelled to do so.
3 years ago at Burning Man, my wife pointed out a small note in the temple that said something like "Dear Kurt, we know you never intended to become the face of angst. We miss you dearly and love you very much. Love Mom, Dad, Courtney and Frances Bean." Not sure which one of them actually wrote it, but moving none the less. THE-Prominent-Beaver
The Happy Ones...
GiphyWith Robin Williams I see myself as him. If you know me in person I'm a happy positive person who is always smiling and laughing. I truly enjoy making other people laugh and having good conversations. I hate seeing other people suffer because I know what it's like and I want to help them. I probably enjoy making others laugh because it masks myself who is hurting inside. On the inside I'm an emotional wreck. I hate talking about my problems to others because it sucks the good energy in the room. I don't have insurance to seek professional help but I'm working on it to get back on track.illplatano

Sounds of youth...Sounds of youth...
Chris Cornell, followed by Chester Bennington [who killed himself due to Cornell's death]. I'm 30 years old, and over the years when people have died, famous people, I've been concerned bit not upset. When Cornell died, it really hit me hard.
His music helped me through a lot of dark times in my teenage years, from Soundgarden/Temple of the Dog/Audioslave and his solo stuff. His voice/music/lyrics really connect with me on a personal level and he still is to this day my favorite artist of all time.
When he died, I was shocked beyond all belief. Even now I can't fully understand it. When Chester killed himself due to a deep depression which in itself was brought on by Cornell's death, I was hit again. Bennington was another teenage influence and the Meteora album is still something I listen to, to this very day.
Chris and Chester, I miss you both as a fan and as somebody you both helped get through their own darker times, in the past and more recently as well. DonKiddic
The Voice.
GiphyChristina Grimme. She was incredibly talented. I started watching her YouTube channel years ago and was so excited when she got a chance to sing on The Voice (USA). Although she didn't win, she was incredibly talented. I got so see her open for Selena Gomez and she was honestly so energetic and fun to watch live. I cried all night when I heard she got shot and murdered at one of her own shows. It was a random act of violence and she didn't deserve it. It was also in the midst of a big gun control debate and literally no one cared that someone easily obtained a weapon and open fired at a concert. Everyone just said "that sucks" and moved on. I was heartbroken for weeks. Hope her family found some peace in the last year or so since it happened. mecohen3264
Do you hear the music?
Avicii also affected me because I follow the EDM music industry very closely and am a DJ myself. I understand how people can fall into addiction in this industry because it is extremely stressful and competitive. Like I mentioned earlier I hate watching people suffer and his death also affected me because Avicii was my same age. illplatano
The Princess...
GiphyCarrie Fisher because she was my girl. Princess Leia was like my idol since I was a little girl. imradmad
Carrie Fisher was the first celebrity death I've ever actually shed a tear over. Star Wars has been a huge part of my life since I was a little kid. What boy hasn't had a crush on the Princess? That was a really rough one. During the lead-up press to The Last Jedi, hearing Mark Hamill talk about Carrie was overwhelming. I miss her. Other celebrities I've felt sad over, sure, but when Carrie died it was the first time I've ever felt grief over a celebrity. LeanMeanWeenMachine
People Are Noticing A Specific Trend In Keanu Reeves' Pictures With Fans, And They're All About It
The internet has recently realized what we've all known inside all along: that Keanu Reeves is too good for this world and one of the greatest stars Hollywood has to offer.
But as Keanu draws some extra internet attention, a surprising trend has come to people's attention! Keanu is always more than happy to take pictures with fans, but all of his pictures have something in common.
It turns out Keanu Reeves is a master practitioner of the "hoverhand."
