REM Frontman Michael Stipe Once Told Trump To 'Shut Up' At A Patti Smith Concert, And His Reaction Was Classic Trump
Years before Donald Trump became President, he was already being rude to people all over New York.
This comes as no news to New Yorkers.
But even Atlanta native Michael Stipe—frontman for the band R.E.M.—has a story.
He told the story of having to tell Donald Trump to shut up at a Patti Smith concert. He told his tale while being interviewed on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
You can watch the interview here.
According to Stipe, he was attending a Patti Smith charity concert at Joe's Pub in Manhattan in the late 1990s when a large, rude man came in with his date and began talking loudly during the music.
After the man wouldn't stop talking, Smith told him:
"Excuse me, that's my friend. And you have to stop talking. ... Stop! ... What are you doing? Shut up."
Of course, we now know that man was none other than future President Donald Trump.

Without yet calling out Trump by name, Stipe described what the man did in response to being chastised.
"The guy got up and left. He walked out. He took his date, who he was obviously trying to pick up, and left the club."
@Newsweek I wish we could all do that and have the same effect.— Jeff Yorkes (@Jeff Yorkes) 1580489641.0
Colbert and Stipe also discussed R.E.M.'s continued battle to stop Trump from playing their music at his rallies.
Stipe disappointedly explained:
"It's a licensing problem and there's nothing we can do except respectfully request that he not."
Twitter loved Stipe for telling Trump off when he had the chance.

Thanks for doing what many wish they could, Michael Stipe. Only the luckiest people in the world will have the opportunity to tell Donald Trump to "shut up" before they die.

Stephen Colbert took a moment during his wildly popular show to pay tribute to the late John Meiklejohn, his longtime cameraman.
Meiklejohn passed away last week.
He was an industry veteran, winning the 2012 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video Control for a Miniseries, Movie or a Special for his work capturing that year's Tony Awards ceremony.
He also worked on nearly 200 episodes of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, which allowed him and the comic to develop a respectful rapport.
According to Colbert:
"He was known to everybody. He'd been working in New York forever. He believed in me and I could feel it from him, and sadly we lost John last weekend. I wish I could have seen him again."
Colbert added that Meiklejohn "liked to talk about his boat."
In fact, the two men shared a passion for boating and for fishing.
"He gave me a beautiful fishing rod for my 50th birthday and he gave me the most beautiful gift of all, like I said, he believed in me."
Colbert recalled that in Meiklejohn firmly believed Colbert would have a long and fruitful career on television, once telling Colbert's own father-in-law after a taping that the show would succeed "because of that man at that desk."
Colbert was visibly emotional as he remembered that moment, telling the audience:
"While I never got to see him again, I do miss him, and I want to say, 'Thank you John. I love you, old man."

Stephen Colbert Tried His Best To Figure Out Who Keri Russell Is Playing In 'Star Wars: Episode IX,' But She Wouldn't Break
For nearly two years, fans have been waiting patently for more information about the final installment of the Star Wars franchise. But the actors are remaining tight lipped, even as fans grow more anxious.
Keri Russell is no different. She wasn't in the last two films, The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi, but she has a role in the yet to be named finale. She stopped by The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on March 26, and she refused to reveal a thing.
Stephen Wants 'Star Wars' Spoilers From Keri Russellwww.youtube.com
Russell is known for playing the titular role of Felicity on the show Felicity. Most recently, she portrayed Elizabeth Jennings on FX's The Americans, which had it's series finale last May.
Colbert is rewatching the entire series, and mentioned he had not seen the finale yet. Russell showed off her secret keeping skills by not revealing a single spoiler.
Then Colbert asked Russell about her Broadway debut in the show Burn This, in which she works with Adam Driver.
Colbert asked her if she was the star of the show.
Russell responded:
"Well in my mind, Adam, because he has this great showy part, I always though it was Adam's play and we started rehearsing and I thought, I'm in this a lot more than I thought."
Driver also plays Ben Solo/Kylo Ren (the son on Princess Leia and Han Solo) in the newest arc of Star Wars. Russell gets to work with Driver again because she has a role in Star Wars Episode IX.
Colbert first brought up Star Wars by asking what Russell's son thought of her involvement.
He even asked if he visited the set, to which she responded:
"He didn't get to visit the set, because we shot in London in Pinewood where they shoot the original, but I do have the coolest costume. I will say."
Colbert then tried to get Russell to reveal the title of the new movie and what her roles were, even insisting that director J.J. Abrams wouldn't care because they are friends:
"J.J.'s a friend of mine, he wouldn't mind if you told me. We're all friends of J.J's here."
Keri Russell held her ground, adamant the she wouldn't tell. As a last resort, Colbert tried to guess what kind of character she would play.
With a camera focused on Keri's face, he read his guesses:
"Your character is Yoda's ex wife, Rachel who runs a profitable business on Tattooine. You and Yoda met on Okay Cupid, and he said he was six foot two.
Your character is pretending to be a member of The First Order but is actually a Russian spy with a lot of wigs.
Your character isn't integral to the story, you just keep walking into random scenes asking if you left your keys there."
Being the professional she is, Russell didn't let anything slip, though she did find the humor in his guesses. Colbert's last guess, especially, was a fan favorite.
He says:
"This is my big guess. This is my final guess. This is based partially on the length and color of your hair, your character is Chewbacca's step sister, Chewbecky."
People seemed to like the idea of Chewbecky:
@colbertlateshow @starwars Chewbecky with the good hair. 😂 #LSCC— Lindsay (@Lindsay) 1553660483.0
And of course they had their own theories:
keri russell is clearly the main character in the new star wars movie she will bring the first order down and singl… https://t.co/53HbAEXaiJ— 🦌 (@🦌) 1553698408.0
Russell is clearly good at keeping secrets, maybe because she played a Russian spy on TV for six seasons. She wouldn't even give away the name of Episode IX.
Guess we'll just have to wait for the movie to come out to get all the answers. Let's hope we can make it til then!
With a name like Conan O'Brien, it's not exactly a surprise that he's Irish. It helps that the comedian and talk show host brings up his heritage often.
In an interview on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Conan talks about just how Irish he is.
Conan O'Brien's DNA Test Stunned His Doctorwww.youtube.com
In the clip above, Conan tells Colbert about his doctor administering a genetic ancestry test.
"He took a DNA sample and I left. Two weeks later he called me up.
"And he said, 'I have never ever ever had a DNA result like this before and I've been doing this for ten years.' I said, 'What is it?'
"He said, 'You are 100% Irish.'"
It's official. Conan O'Brien is the only true Irishman.
Conan continued, explaining his conversation with his doctor.
"I have never seen a 100% anything. I've been doing this a lot. I've done it with lots of people. I've seen 93.5, I've seen 96.1, I've seen 97.
No one is 100% Irish,"
Conan explained.
"If you go to Ireland… and you get their DNA samples, you will find that the most Irish-looking people are like 86 percent, 94 percent Irish.
The Lucky Charms leprechaun, true fact, 11 percent Spanish."
This is all very impressive sounding, but we have to ask, what does it mean to be 100% of something?
Conan had the same question.
"I didn't know what to make of this. I said, 'What does it mean?'
He said, 'What does it mean? It means you're inbred.'
And he said it just like that!"
I guess that's still impressive, but in a completely different way now.
"Anyone else think back to the time when Johnny Knoxville told Conan that his lineage also had some inbreeding, when they were watching this?"
Conan continues in the clip to explain it's because when his ancestors came over during the mid-1800s, they stayed together in the same community. He jokes that his wife being only half Irish makes him a rebel.
It also explains his abnormal body, he jokes.
"I think that is the biggest applause I've ever seen on Colbert. Stephen even commented how the people love Conan." - wikimandia
"Conan is simply the best" - hunkieboi88
"Did Steve add anything to this clip? It was all Conan" -DigbickMcBalls
The story comes at a time when we're re-examining the relationship the general populace has with DNA testing.
For starters, the accuracy of the consumer tests has been called into question. Instances of non-human DNA have been purposely sent to labs for testing and found the company performing the test doesn't even notice.
Additionally, the question of privacy is becoming a common talking point. After it was announced that police used genetic testing with a public database to catch the Golden State Killer, people became worried about the ethical implications.
By taking a DNA test, you could be implicating yourself or a family member in a crime. Combined with the potential for inaccuracies, it has legal experts questioning the practice.
