People Confess The Scariest Thing Their Spouse Ever Said To Them
Reddit user i_like_purple_clouds asked: 'What is the scariest thing your spouse ever said to you?'
Content Warning: Mental Health, Suicide, Suicidal Ideation, Violence
It's so hard to know what someone else is thinking or going through.
Even when they tell us, it can be difficult to fathom the feeling without living it ourselves.
Because of this, sometimes a person can really surprise us by saying something we never expected, even the people we love the most in the world.

Absolute Nightmares
"'Look at all those snakes on the ceiling!'"
"It was the middle of the night. He was actually fast asleep. There were no snakes."
- morganafiolett
"My ex was an arachnophobe, and my son had a fever dream/nightmare and was very distressed, screaming that he had woken up and seen 'tarantulas' scuttling into the corners of the underside of the upper bunk of his bunk bed."
"I was doing that, 'Honey, you're very sick, and you've been asleep, and I know it feels very real, but I promise you that there are no spiders...' speech when my ex just ran in, scooped up the boy, and hollered, 'F**k that noise, woman! Call me when you've flipped the mattresses!!' and legit ran out of the apartment with kiddo, lol (laughing out loud)."
"This annoyed me to no end at the time, but my son later told me that my ex made him feel very heard."
- kifferella
Their Reason for Living
"'There are times when I only wake up because I know you're here.'"
- Foreveridosyncratic
"Very sweet, but it would break my heart to hear, which is exactly why I don't say it to my husband, even when it feels true."
- Silhouette_Edge
That Familiar Heart Stitch
"'I think I'm having a heart attack.'"
"It was her first panic attack. I broke every law driving her to the hospital. Thankfully she's doing better now."
- HyliaSerket
"I said this to my fiancé last winter after (being in the process of) getting diagnosed with a heart arrhythmia. I woke him up SOBBING in the middle of the night when he was dead asleep and said, 'I think I’m having a heart attack.'"
"Poor guy. It’s insane how a panic attack can mimic a heart attack. My arm even went numb/tingly!"
- SummerSunset8
Truth Mid-Session
"During our first marriage counseling session, we were asked about our goals for this session. She said, 'I don’t want this to work.'"
"And it did not work. That was the end of our marriage. At the time, it was the scariest moment of my life. Today, three years later, I can honestly say neither of us was happy and needed some help."
"Therapy works. Sometimes honesty hurts and revelations are hard."
- ATENFOOTTURD
Always, Always Ask For Help
"'I thought about hanging myself in the garage last night.' That was my husband when he finally told me how bad he was struggling with his mental health."
"I had no idea he was in such a dark place. Hearing that come out of his mouth both scared the s**t out of me and ripped my heart out."
- heyypeach
The Ultimatum
"'If this is what being with you for the rest of my life is going to be like, I want out right now.'"
"This was said six months into my second marriage."
"I finally heard it: that I was damaged and that I needed help."
"I immediately found a therapist and went steadily for 10 years. It was hard as f**k. Lots of uncomfortable times."
"But it changed me. We are together now pretty f**king happily, 23 years with now two amazing kids. S**t doesn’t have to last forever."
- um8medoit
What's with the Lights?
"'All the lights downstairs just went on. There is someone in our house...'"
"I was on a business trip and my wife called me at 3:00 AM. Never felt so helpless in my life."
"She called the police and they searched our home from top to bottom but we never found out who switched on every single light on the ground floor!"
- GnOeLLLmPF
"Our basement was like this. My husband kept blaming me for leaving the light on, but I had stopped going down there because I was pregnant and didn't want to do unnecessary stairs."
"When he, quite upset at me for continuing to do what irked him so much, told me, 'Can you stop leaving lights on, I'm the one who has to pay the power bill,' and I was like, 'Actually, I haven't been down there in weeks.'"
"I assumed the basement was haunted or we had someone secretly living down there (unlikely because we have security set up... And dogs). But it turns out one of the light switches (the type with a dimmer) was just broken. You'd turn it off and leave the room... But then a few minutes later it would short and turn back on."
- evange
Undervaluing Themselves
"At her lowest point of depression, whilst out shopping, with no apparent trigger, she deadpanned, 'You'd be better off if I didn't come home.'
"Fortunately, she got out of that rut, but doesn't remember saying it and how much it terrified me."
- takesbribes
A Secret Life
"I discovered he was addicted to cocaine. It was completely out of the blue. I would have never found out if I hadn’t stained my shirt and had to go home to change and walked in on him snorting a fat rail at 1:39 PM on a random Tuesday."
"I gave him an ultimatum: my support during rehab unconditionally, or we completely part ways if you want to continue snorting coke all day."
"He said, 'The coke, I don’t want to talk to you.'"
"He chose coke and we divorced, and I have no idea whether he is alive or dead. Frankly, the man I married never actually existed. I have such a bad picker I’ve decided to just give up."
- Glldinkiering
"Honestly, bless him for being straightforward and allowing you to get out quickly. He could have taken you through multiple years of hell of trying to get clean and relapsing over and over. Staying home to do lines alone on a random Tuesday is pretty deep in it, so it's a blessing you caught him that day and got out."
- anoidciv
"He also did me a solid by insisting we have a prenuptial agreement which protected me when his @ss was sued into oblivion by his business partners for embezzling money for coke."
- Glldinkiering
Terrible News
"'I've been in an accident...'"
- Ok-Detective-1721
"I’ve been that guy, she happened to call me as I was being lifted into the ambulance with my head smashed after being hit by a car. I had regained consciousness only seconds earlier."
"Somehow I had the presence of mind to phrase it, 'I’m okay, but I have to go to hospital because I’ve had an accident.'"
- lilgreenrosetta
Bad Dreams Love Company
"'Who’s that standing in the corner?' she said at 2:00 AM while sitting up in bed and pointing towards the corner."
"I was still half asleep but freaking out and then she just laid back down and continued sleeping like nothing happened. No one was in the corner."
- futbo2
"One time I got out of bed to use the bathroom, and as I crossed in front of the bed my wife sat up and started screaming like nothing I’ve ever heard."
"I had an injury that has had me sleeping with extra pillows to position my body comfortably since I was early twenties. The pillows made it look in the dark like I was still asleep next to her. So when she saw me crossing in front of the bed, she thought someone had broken in and was in our room."
- PerfectionPending
Unwelcome Houseguests
"She was filling our water bottles before coming to bed and I was just on my phone in bed. I heard her come up the stairs almost like she tripped on the last step because she usually misses that last one."
"Just as I’m getting up to go see if she’s alright, she comes flying through the bedroom door closing it behind her. I never saw her scared like this and I was confused until she said, 'Something just followed me up the stairs.'"
"I nearly s**t myself, that type of fear where tears spring to your eyes and your stomach knots."
"I’m not sure what I would have done if it was just the two of us alone in the house. (There were others, but they were in their room and asleep.)"
"At first, I thought it was the dog, but she confirmed it was very much not. There was nothing there. She claims it was a large black mass behind her that she could hear. We both had a bit of trouble going to sleep that night."
- MonsterMontvalo
"My best friend was at a friend's house and had a dark mass behind him, over his shoulder, and looking down on him."
"In the middle of the night on the way to the restroom, he felt it. He paused for he didn’t know how long, 10 seconds or 10 minutes, he couldn’t say. Then he looked up and saw it in a mirror at the end of the hall. He sprinted to the restroom and stayed there until the sun came up."
"His friend said he looked terrible in the morning and he responded by saying he saw something last night."
"His friend said, 'Oh man, talk to Mom about it.'"
"He told the Mom about the experience, and she asked, 'Was it the light one or the dark one?'
"Dark one. 'Ok good, the light one is mean.' And that’s all that was said."
- M_n_Ms
F**k Cancer
"'I’m tired and want to go home.'"
"He died six hours later, after only fighting cancer for six weeks."
- Bulky-Tomatillo-1705
"She told me, 'I want to die at home.'"
"She had been battling cancer for five weeks and wanted to be home. She had a few weeks with me and died eight weeks after the inital diagnosis. F**k cancer."
- kazz-wizz
Talk... About What?!
"We need to talk when you get home."
"Folks, I spent the next six hours going over every possible thing I could have done wrong to warrant that response. We were in the middle of buying a house and planning our wedding and I thought everything could possibly be crumbling."
"Turns out my darling wife, the love of my life, and my best friend missed the f**king memo of what 'we need to talk' means in a relationship and wanted to talk to me about CARPETING FOR THE HOUSE."
"That conversation happened over a dozen years ago at this point and I still remind her from time to time about how she almost gave me a heart attack."
"To this day, she thinks it's hilarious."
- Trendsa
Brutal, To Be Honest
"Good god, I have to stop reading these. So much heartbreak here."
"It’s good to be reminded to not take things for granted in good times."
- slaphappypap
This conversation was a great example of how little we might know of what's going on in someone's head, even if it's the person we love the most in the world.
But at least in these Redditors' cases, their partners were willing to share this information with them, which gave them an opportunity to make the situation better.

People Reveal The Scariest Person They've Ever Met
Reddit user sludge_factory_777 asked: 'Who is the scariest person you have ever met?'
Content Warning: True Crime Topics
It's hard to know what's going on in someone's head without having their mind ourselves, but we can make assumptions based on how they behave.
Some people have a serious vibe about them that other people know better than to mess with, with some of those vibes downright terrifying.
Redditor sludge_factory_777 asked:

Jail Besties
"I got a DUI back in 2009 and was taken to the Placer County drunk tank. A guy with tattoos all over his face approached me..."
"He wanted to offer me his roll of toilet paper for a pillow. He introduced himself as the 'Sac City Psycho,' and he told me he would watch over me to make sure nobody f**ked with me, because he could tell I did not have much experience in jail."
"Now looking back on it, I guess for a few hours there, I was his b***h."
"Super nice guy, though. I 10 out of 10 would be his b***h again."
- NagoGmo
Innocent Until Feeling the Vibes
"I did an internship at a jail and met a dude awaiting trial on a triple homicide."
"The guy just had that vibe around him that just made you feel uncomfortable. Just being in his presence, you could feel the air change around you."
"Everyone in that room felt and respected it."
- throughthequad
The Magnetic Personality Type
"I once did one of those corporate mock jury panels. The little scientist analytics guy came out halfway through to shoot the breeze and holy h**l, I never understood what people meant by having a magnetic personality until then."
"We were clamoring over this dude. It was completely involuntary. He asked me a question and it was an out-of-body experience watching myself act like a golden retriever."
"I was so freaked out that I avoided him like the plague the rest of the panel. Nice dude. Seemed chill, but he could have started a cult with a snap of his fingers. Absolutely terrifying."
- Bridge-etti
Top-Notch Security
"I once as a medical student was doing a rotation in the state mental prison. We had to do a basic physical on this guy."
"There was a chair in the middle of the room, bolted to the floor. He had cuffs on his wrists and feet secured to the chair. Nine guards were in the room surrounding us, not more than five feet from the chair in a circle."
"He was off, just not there, and didn't want to cooperate. He looked at me, saw my coat, and said, 'That guy is from the university. I want to talk to him.'"
"I still don't know what he had done, but after a few months of the rotation, no one else had that degree of security for medical visits. No one else was even close."
- rykh7
Biker Aesthetic
"My cousin. He's a high-ranking member of a pretty well-known one-percent motorcycle club. The dude stands maybe five feet, seven inches tall, and he is of average build. He has no visible tattoos and is super soft-spoken."
"Everything about him says he should be a banker, not a biker. I have never seen him even raise his voice once but that dude scares the absolute s**t out of me. He gives off strong psycho energy."
- SignificantFix8218
Scary Dude with a Big Heart
"I live in New Mexico and met 'Big Dragon' from 'Beyond Scared Straight.' He does outreach like that with troubled kids."
"I was working as a teacher at YDDC, and they brought him down. The dude is no joke."
"I shook his hand, and you could just tell, the only reason he was not killing people was he didn't want to, because if he did, the guards would have not been able to do anything about it."
- Soundwave-1976
Murderous Besties
"I got arrested for public intoxication in the mid-to-late 90's and was put in a normal cell because the drunk tank was full. About ten minutes later, I was woken up and hastily moved to an adjoining cell."
"I visited with the guy in the first cell I was in for a few hours. When I was bailed out, I bumped knuckles with Gary, the guy in the second cell, and left."
"I later found out he was Gary Kleypas, and he was being held on first-degree murder... of a college student."
- TheJonnieP
Completely Out of Place
"I was working at a bar in a pretty small town when we had a drifter come in on a random midweek night. The second he walked through the door, everyone I worked with and was at the bar said they felt cold."
"The dude had incredibly sunken eyes, pale white skin, dingy dirty hair, and visibly sharp-looking teeth. If I were to explain what a mako shark as a human would be, that’s this guy."
"He said he was passing through and was looking for 'stuff ordinary people can’t find' and then proceeded to show photos on his phone of odd areas he had been to previously. Nothing was off about the photos, but everyone I saw gave me more chills."
"Nothing was happening, no one was there, but everything had this feeling of 'I’m not supposed to be here.'"
" The dude left and asked me to follow him on Instagram, which I did. He posted last a few years ago up in Jackson Hole and said he’d be staying off for a while. Odd dude. We all were quite relieved when his cab showed up."
- Expensive_Change_893
The Doll Whisperer
"My grandpa's second wife, Angie. She was a hateful woman. I don't believe in people being 100% anything, but she was pure evil."
"She had a collection of porcelain dolls in a corner of their house when I was very young, and she would always try to talk to me through them, giving each of them their own creepy voices. One time, I touched a Pillsbury dough boy figure on her shelf, and she swatted my hand with a metal ruler."
"She was in her 70s when I was a young kid, and I'm 30 now. I heard from my aunt that she's still alive somewhere near where she lived with my grandpa (which makes me believe she is some kind of hag witch) and that she's committed insurance fraud, like, a lot."
- LepreConArtist
Constant High-Alert
"I was at a bar and this guy walked in and immediately it felt like I was on alert. My spine turned to ice when I saw his eyes look at me, they were almost sunken into his face as if he was peeking out from behind a portrait. He moved like a cat stalking prey."
"Over time, he made his way over to me and made polite conversation, but his words felt disjointed, almost like he was translating them before speaking them. There was nothing aggressive or insulting about anything he was doing."
"In fact, he was quite polite. but everything about this guy was setting off every nerve I had. He was even smiling through most of it, but it felt as if his lips were stapled back."
- Cyanora
Reverse 'Breaking Bad'
"When I was pretty young, I was hanging out with an older friend, and I found out one of her close friends from school became a high-ranking member of a cartel. He got cancer and was allowed to sort of 'retire' from the cartel to spend the last few years with his family."
"I met him at a party of hers...He was very polite, but I had no intention of spending more time around him!"
- xain_the_id**t
Soldier Vibes
"A dude who hung out with a friend of mine back in the 1980s was a Vietnam vet, one of the advance forces guys or whatever they called them."
"He looked like he could bite the top off of a fire hydrant."
- Earthling1a
A Good Egg. Or Rock.
"A p**sed off Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson."
"Let me explain A few years ago, I was part of a charity event with Power of Pain (a family friend who I call my aunt, Barby, owns the charity for neuropathy and other immune disorders), and funnily enough, we somehow got Dwayne Johnson as a guest (we had contacted him but didn't expect him to actually come)."
"He was a f**king great guy. Honestly, best f**king dude in the world."
"Anyway, after the event, a lot of us went to a Denny's down the road to celebrate, not expecting him to be there, though he was invited. He showed up like 20 minutes after we all got there and he was having a blast hanging out eating Pancakes."
"Unbeknownst to the rest of us, there was a domestic dispute across the Dennys, a couple who seemed like they were about to break up, but more like the guy was just an abusive a**hole screaming at his girlfriend the whole time and her just in tears."
"Dwayne caught wind of what was going on, stood up, put on his 'Rock' persona, and had a f**king screaming match with this guy. The guy was just receding further and further into his shell and eventually he just f**king left."
"Dwayne paid the girl's bill, helped her stop crying, and walked her out to her car. He then came back in with a smile and continued having a good night and finished his Pancakes."
"He's a beautiful, kind-hearted man, but if you p**s him off, he WILL make you s**t yourself. Remember, they call him 'The Rock' for a reason."
"Best night of my life. Moral of the story: Be nice to people, because if you're not, you may find yourself in a situation you just can't win."
- Ok_Experience_6877
It's easy to see how these are the people that Redditors viewed as the scariest and most intimidating people that they had met. Even if a person hasn't done terrible things, sometimes people just have a vibe about them that makes you think they have the potential, or at least the power.
The first time I went to India on vacation to visit family, I had a terrifying experience.
I was nine years old. My grandma called my name, so I turned to face her. She told me lunch was ready and asked me to tell my brother, who was in another room. I turned around and saw a large monkey standing in the middle of the living room!
I let out a short yell but couldn't move to say anything. Luckily, my grandma saw the monkey as well. I didn't know what to do; I knew there were monkeys everywhere. I saw them in the trees. However, I never expected one to come into the house!
My grandma was able to scare it away. She closed our front door so it wouldn't happen again and explained to me monkeys sometimes liked to come into houses if they smell food, like our lunch.
Looking back on it, the experience was more interesting than anything, but nine-year-old me refused to go outside again for three days and made sure all the doors were closed and locked, not trusting monkeys not to be smart enough to use a doorknob.
I'm definitely not the only person who has had a terrifying experience in a foreign country.
It all started when Redditor J3nnyDoll asked:
What's the weirdest/scariest thing you've experienced in a foreign country?"
In Parents We Trust?
"I got lost in an underground city in Tukey as a child. I stepped away from my parents and group to look at something, and when I turned around, they were all gone. I couldn't find anyone who spoke English for a while until finally a man who spoke a little English helped me find my way back to the surface to wait for my parents to come back out. Thankfully, one of the women from our group was already there because she had gotten claustrophobic. Being "lost" was scary enough, but not being able to communicate terrified me. Then, when my parents came up, they didn't even realize I had been lost. So that became the scariest thing, realizing I wasn't exactly "safe" with my parents' inattentiveness."

The Other Side
"A few years ago I'm in Saudi Arabia on business. The company CEO had advised me to use Uber there, because it would be easier than talking to a cabbie who probably didn't speak English. At the end of the trip, I get an Uber to head back to the airport. I notice that the driver blows right past the airport turn-off. It feels like we're heading out into the desert. Pretty quickly, I'm starting to get nervous. I try to ask what is going on, but the guy just looks in the rearview mirror and smiles."
"A few miles later, he's finally taking a turn into, not the airport, but a Saudi air force base! He pulls up to the gates, and out come the guards, yelling at him and pointing their weapons. Now I'm practically crapping my pants in the back seat! WTH is going on? I'm going to be shot or arrested trying to enter a Saudi base illegally because of a f*cking Uber driver!"
"The guy eventually backs up and turns around. We get back on the highway, go a few miles, and he turns off, again. This time, he chose the entrance for all the highway coaches (buses) for people going to the Hajj at Mecca! It's Ramadan, and the place is packed with Muslims making the sacred journey. It's another repeat of this idiot getting himself yelled at again for being in the wrong place. At least this time the guys doing the yelling are not armed, but still..."
"We're back on the highway again in a few minutes, and for the second time, the guy drives right past the correct airport turn-off. I'm in the back wondering how hard I can punch the CEO in the face without getting fired. FFS now where are we going?"
"He follows the highway into town and does this big arc and now we're driving parallel to the previous path of chaos, but about 5 or 6 kms away. The airport is on my right now (it was to the left, previously). This time he takes the first exit, but I'm not familiar with it, but it's the airport, so I'm not complaining."
"As we get closer to the terminals, I realize we're on the wrong side of the airport (like domestic flights versus international flights). He needs to reverse his course, and drive all the way around the outside along that big loop, again. F*ck that. I'm getting out without saying anything. At least I'm at the airport, and maybe there's a shuttle."
"Nope, no shuttle. There are, however, about 50 cab drivers all offering to take me, somewhere, but all they can say is "you need cab?" That's it. One guy sorta steps forward. I'm asking for someone who speaks English and he finally brings a young guy around. In addition to saying "you need cab?", this guy can also say "no problem, I drive you there." It's progress. I show him my airline ticket and he realizes right away I'm on the wrong side of the airport. I ask him how much to go to the other side, and he says it will be the equivalent of $50USD. For a 10 minute ride!"
"Seemed like a better rate than Uber."
"FWIW I wrote a complaint to Uber. They reimbursed me immediately."

Summoning
"I used to teach English in Japan. I didn’t get off most nights until 9pm, so it was close to 10 by the time I made it to the train stop near my apartment. One night I’m walking home and the street is dead, except for this elementary school boy walking towards me and whistling."
"In Japan, whistling at night is said to attract demons so I was a bit unsettled by his behavior. The kid just kept whistling. I hurried home, demon free."
"I also used to find long thick black hair in my apartment in places I’d recently cleaned. I don’t have thick black hair, my hair is fine and red, so that was weird. I also didn’t have guests with hair like that so, who knows!"
– Lost_Feature8488
An Unsung Hero
"In Egypt, as I was leaving, an official guy in uniform came over and asked to see my passport and put it straight into his pocket and said I was being detained. Walked me over to a side office and told me to wait inside."
"I didn't go in and told him (maybe stupidly) that I was about to miss my flight and he said, he could 'make the process faster' if I paid the 'administrative fee'. Fine - a bribe whatever. Wasn't the first time on this trip. I take out the literal last of my cash and hand it to him, he puts it straight into his pocket and says 'not enough.'"
"I'm explaining that it's literally all of the money I have and this woman, not in any kind of uniform, walks over to the guy, says something to him quite quietly (like speaking into his ear) and he looks petrified. Just absolutely terrified. Immediately gives me back my passport and not just the cash I gave him but some more that I guess he got from someone else before me and starts apologising to me profusely and even offered to escort me to my gate."
"She just smiled at me and told me to have a nice flight."
– PhiloPhocion
Mysterious, Very Mysterious
"Few years back I was in Russia (I don't recall what was name of that place I was in) and well..."
"If I remember it correctly then I was in some smaller town that looked like ghost town. You could see outside only few people and buildings looked abandoned. Also almost no cars. Prety weird and scary, but the peek was at one of outer edges there was a small forest and small wall in front of it. Nothing else around. Just small forest with small clean untoutched concrete wall. And on some trees in that small forest I saw hats just hanging from there. I sadly don't have photos of that place, but I know I never will return there."

Racing The Sun
"A few years ago I was visiting Colombia and need to travel into the interior from Cartagena. It was about a 6 hour drive to where I was going so I arrange for a car the next morning and off we go."
"As we get deeper into the countryside I notice the driver seems a little hurried. Like tires screeching around corners and weaving through moving traffic. I was already a little nervous and he was making me more nervous, so I ask him if everything's okay and that I'm not in that big of a hurry so he can take his time."
"He looks in the mirror back at me and says "it's not safe for you to be out here at night so we need to hurry.""
"Of course I'm just sitting there kinda thinking well, sh*t. So I ask him if it's that serious and he looks back in the mirror at me again and says "dangerous for you and dangerous for me to be with you.""
"And then it clicked he wasn't just worried about me, he was scared for himself. Last hour or so of that drive, racing the fading Sun was absolutely panic-inducing."
"I've been to the country a few more times now and have yet to experience anything bad but that car ride seriously freaked me out in the moment."

Keep Your Information Private
"In Tunisia cops stopped our Taxi, wanted our papers and to know where we stay. Soon afterwards taxi driver said we shouldn’t have told him. A few days later the cop comes to reception saying he’s our friend. That was a mess. Luckily I ran into our tour guide who got rid of him. Seems the cop was hoping some ”donation.”"

No Peace
"Taking an overnight ferry during a People to People program in the summer with a bunch of high schoolers. Overnight from Italy to Sicily."
"Bunch of younger to middle aged dudes not in the group were constantly hitting on the girls and were trying to proposition them back to their cabins on the ship. A few of us saw some trying to follow us back to our own rooms and a male teacher had to intervene."
"Later that night when in the room with the three other girls we heard our door being tested to see if locked. I was fully prepared to claw the eyes out of any motherf*cker who successfully got in but it was a f*ckin scary sleepless night."
– SeaOfFireflies
Man's Best Friend
"I have a friend that's from South Africa. He was going to go back for a bit to visit some family and friends. He invited me along. We stayed with one of his friends who live in a really old colonial house in, quite literally, the middle of nowhere. This house has a fence around the entire property."
"We were returning to the house one night. It was very dark. No street lights or anything. We pulled up to the gate to the property. I was in the passenger seat so I hopped out to open the gate. As I opened the gate I thought I heard something run past me, but a bit in the distance. I was a bit spooked so I quickly closed the gate after the vehicle passed through. When I fully closed it I heard the same thing run past me, but this time much closer."
"I knew I wasn't just hearing things this time. I was absolutely freaked out. Here I was in the middle of nowhere in a country with plenty of animals that can quite easily tear me apart. At this point I started running back to the vehicle. As I was running I heard the same thing run after me, but it was gaining on me. As I reached the door the thing reached me. This time, I could see it and it was indeed an animal. It was the house owner's friendly dog excited to see me. I never felt so relieved in my entire life. I thought for sure I was going to die."

Shopping Can Be Scary
"When I was in Turkey my friend and I (F23 and F28) were walking through a small market just browsing. We stopped next to one shop to take a look on something. Owner immediately jumped in trying to persuade us to buy (which is normal) or for my friend (and only her) to go with him upstairs to see more goods. When we refused and turned to walk away he grabbed my friend by upper arm and hauled her to the stairs. We both were screaming and hitting him but he only let go when I twisted his thumb making him loosen his hold. My friend had huge bruise on her arm for the rest of vacation."

At this point in life... what isn't scary?
I have a shock or two on the regular.
Whether it's that late night walk home alone or the thunder roar that can be heard from miles away; so many things can get the heart racing.
You hear on the news stories of stray dead bodies and people being chased by psychos.
At this point... why leave the house?
\RedditorMlltrwas hoping everyone would be willing to share some stories about the times they were left shooketh! They asked:
"What is the scariest thing you have experienced?"
What was that?!

Smushed
"I got rear-ended stopped at a light on my motorcycle. I flew right over the guy that hit me, easily ten, fifteen feet in the air, and landed on my back. Watched my bike get smushed into a pancake between the car that hit me and the car in front of me. I was shocked at the amount of people that came out of their cars to ask if I was alright."
"It took me a while to get my breath back. Had to throw off my helmet, felt like a fish out of water. Something about the way the bike got crushed, and I realized I would most certainly not be alive had I not gotten thrown off the bike. The driver that hit me was on his phone."

Nothing is Possible
"Biking in the woods with my Dad. We stopped to rest at his request and he complained about chest pain. Then he lost consciousness and became unresponsive. He stopped breathing and I started CPR. We were about two miles into the trail and it was getting late. I called 911 and continued CPR with 911 on speaker. It took about 25 minutes for first responders to to find us."
"I continued CPR the entire time until EMS showed up, I didn't think I could continue I was getting so exhausted. It was by far the most afraid I've ever been. I felt alone and completely helpless, I even considered hoisting him on my bike and thought maybe I could run him out of the trail to find help. But realized that wasn't really possible."
"He didn't make it and it effected me for awhile afterwards. It was thought at the time he had a heart attack and the autopsy later confirmed it was. I'm at peace with it now. I gave him the best chance I could. I will never forget the complete and total helplessness I felt."

Alone
"I was in a motorcycle crash just last week and I’ve been trying to tell myself it wasn’t a big deal. A car turned on their left blinker and started to cross the yellow line, and began to pass on the right. They quickly swerved back to the right to instead take a right hand turn and I impacted their drivers side door and was thrown from the bike."
"It didn’t hit me how I could’ve died until the claim adjuster showed up a week later and pointed to damage points on the bike and where they had impacted the car. It was very lonely experience. The police never asked if I was okay, and neither did the bystanders. I felt so alone."

Snakes are a HARD NO! I would be out so fast!
Please Breathe
"This was also my answer to what was the happiest I have ever been. My son had a massive seizure and stopped breathing in the emergency room. The nurses had to 'bag' him for over an hour to keep him alive. When I finally heard him cry I was happier than I have words to explain."

That Night
"When I first moved into my new house in 2016, very night I would hear random bangs during the night. It horrified me but I just took the guess that it was my dog. Well one night at around 4am I hear a huge bang and then my door opening, see I have no freaking clue what it was so I pretend to be asleep and let it be."
"So after a few minutes my door closes and I run to grab my phone. As I'm walking across the house I go and look under the couch. Can you guess what I saw? A freaking chipmunk, I've been terrorized by a chipmunk for 3 months. Probably the scariest night of my life."

The Storm
"A tornado warning, I was only 12, But tornados terrified me, And still do, I remember my grandparents waking me up, They had known about the tornado before we did. And we apparently took a long time to actually wake up, my family was rushing around the house in a panic to grab clothes, shoes, pets etc."
"I also remember running to my grandma's house as it was the safest place we could get to in the storm, I wasn't dressed in very warm clothing. And tripped into a puddle of mud, So I was cold. Wet and afraid Luckily it passed us."

Fly High
"It wasn't scary at the time, but... I was on vacation in Greece, visiting family. We board a plane in Athens bound for JFK. Twas TWA flight 881. If you are not aware, the flight number is indicative of a route. Anyway, we land, disembark, get our luggage, hop on the BQE, then the GWB."
"Meanwhile, the airplane refueled, boarded new passengers, and it changed callsign... to TWA flight 800. We were somewhere in Jersey when it blew up over the long island sound. That same airplane we had just landed in... So... yeah. I hate flying now."

People Describe The Creepiest Experiences They've Had While Driving Late At Night
The open road can be freeing.
Reddit user, rosetrail, wanted to know what you may or may not have seen on the open, dark road when they asked:
"What is the creepiest experience you’ve ever had while driving late at night/very early in the morning?"
What might you find on the open road?
A strange car following you home?
A crazed owl?
You Can Trust Us....
"Was driving through Arizona a night and a black yukon with police lights tailgated us. My wife said to not pull over as it doesnt look like a police a car. It followed us for 4 minutes then pulled away. I almost fell for it"

Wanting To Come For The Ride
"An owl hit the side of my car while I was driving on a State Highway. Left a big dust mark on the side of the car. Freaked me and my then girlfriend out pretty badly. We pulled over and then drove back to see if it was dead by the side of the road. It wasn't."

Here To Help
"Driving back from visiting my boyfriend at his college. The drive took about 3 hours by expressway in rural area. It was was late and very dark out. All of the sudden the wheel starts shaking really bad and I have to pulled over. Luckily there was a rest stop exit right there and I was able to pull off the expressway."
"My friend was with me and she is pretty drunk and no help. I get out to see what happened and see my tire is very low. Please note this was years ago, cell phones were a thing, but good service wasn’t…"
"I open the trunk to get out the jack and spare tire. Two guys come over to help. Mind you it is the middle of the night at a rural rest stop so I’m a little cautious but can use the help. I can and have changed a tire but it’s not easy and takes me longer than I care to admit."
"So I let the guys help but it quickly became apparent they have no idea what they are doing! As I’m trying to get rid of these two my buzzed friend gets out of the car and starts trying to chat them up, UGH."
"It takes a a couple tries but I get her back in the car all while trying to get these guys to leave. I’m starting to get really uncomfortable and nervous when out of the corner of my eye I see a car pull out from a dark corner of the parking lot. Two other guys pull up and before they even got out of the car the first two hurried to their car and left."
"The new guys quickly changed my tire. None of us said a word while they changed it. I said thank you and both gave me a nod and just left."
"No clue who those fellows were, how long they sat in the shadows watching, but after 20+ years I think of them often and wish them well."

Is there anything more terrifying than a man jumping out at you from the darkness?
No?
What if he had a weapon?
Save A Life
"Not me but my brother. Driving home from out of town with wife and three kids in the back. Going 100 down the highway both him and his wife see a man on the side of the road."
"He wasn’t trying to hitch hike and wasn’t really paying attention to the cars. They only saw him for a second but he kinda looked like he was stumbling. They’re at least 5k from the last town so they figure he’s in trouble."
"They want to turn around to see if he’s ok but on the highway you can’t just do that anywhere. By the time they find a turn off and make it back to the spot it’s at least 15 minutes later."
"They don’t see anything so the call the local police and explain the situation. My brother and the officer look around a bit but there’s not much you can do."
"This is the middle of the prairies, there’s lots of open land and they’re not 100% sure exactly where they saw the guy. The officer says he’ll call some more guys and look around a bit more but for my brother to go home and get his kids to bed."
"The next morning he got a call from the officer. They found the guy in a diabetic coma and were able to get him to a hospital. He had some beers at the town they passed and just wandered off. My brother definitely saved his life."

The Strangest 'Wrong Number' Stories | George Takei’s Oh Myyy
Before we all had caller ID, wrong numbers phone calls were commonplace. But now that almost everyone screens their calls, it's wrong number texts that have ...What's Scarier? The Tightie Whities Or The Sword?
"So the summer after I graduated I worked at a state park as a temporary worker. My shift was 8pm to 4am with one of the rangers."
"One night, we were driving down to one of the boat launches when a man jumps out of the bush right in front of us. He was dressed only in his tighty whities, waving a stick like a sword at the truck."
"The ranger opened the door and leaned out, asking, 'Sir, do you need some help?' To which he screamed, 'No!' And ran into the woods again. Saw a lot of weird sh-t at that job."

Never Stop. Keep Going.
"When I was 18/19, my best friend, her sister, and I were driving home late after a night out. It was raining hard and made it extremely difficult to see on the highway."
"We stopped under an overpass to see if the weather would lighten up a bit. I turned to look out the window (front seat passenger) to find someone in a hoodie charging at the vehicle. Immediately gogogogogogogogo!!!"
"We sped off into the night and made it home safely. I have never stopped under an overpass again and I am almost 40."

The world is a big place and you never know what you're going to see what's out there unless you stop to...
call the police on Gandalf?
Fly, You Fools!
"Not creepy really, more funny/weird. At night driving westbound across the I-90 bridge to Seattle, in the headlights I saw a man in the road just barely off the shoulder, on the wrong side of the pedestrian barrier, walking opposite to the traffic."
"He was very tall with long white hair, a long white beard, a billowing white robe, and I swear to God-- a long wooden staff. He was striding with some damn purpose. But obviously out of place and at great risk."
"So I called 911 and when they asked for a description all I could think was to tell them to look for Gandalf the White Wizard. Later the dispatcher called me back to tell me he sent out a BOLO for Gandalf and the responding officer reported my description was perfect."

Take A Rest
"My husband and I were on an emergency trip out to MS to help get my mom into a nursing home."
"I don’t have a license to drive a car, so he had to drive the whole way."
"About 3 am, we get to this stretch of road that is, as far as I could tell, a straight road with inlaid fields on both sides. All well and good, but in the pitch black, with no streetlights, at 3 am it was super unnerving."
"I noticed my husband…idk…not acting quite right? Like…, he was breathing differently, and his posture was a little different, little stuff but you notice when you’re married. I was like “honey do you need to take a break?” And he goes “oh, no I’m fine. Let’s just finish this strip and we can find a hotel”. I trusted his judgement and we made it across and hit the hay at a Days Inn somewhere."
"The next morning, we wake up and are brushing our teeth and I comment on how creepy that stretch of road was. He gets quiet and goes “….I honestly thought I dreamt that. I remember it not feeling real and me feeling like it was a dream”."
"I told him I’d asked him if he needed a break and he was like “yeah I remember that too, and I thought I dreamt it. do me a favor, and I’ll return it if the need arises, if I ever tell you I’m fine and don’t need a break after driving for 4 hours in pitch darkness again? Don’t take no for an answer. I was so out of it I didn’t realize I was that gone.”
"So we now have a standing agreement to stop each other well before then, but the idea that he was fully dissociated in that moment and had less than a healthy grasp on reality always makes me shiver. I hate to imagine all the moments that could have gone wrong."
"Remember, exhausted driving is just as bad as drunk driving."

TW: Domestic Abuse
"I saw a car that was pulled over. The passenger side door was open. A man was beating his partner. Called 911, gave the vehicle description and a partial plate."
"I'm still scared I made the abuse worse."
"Edit: To the domestic abuse survivors in the comments, thank you for letting me know I probably helped the victim."
"I sincerely hope that all of you are in a safe place and have a good life. Domestic abuse is awful, and I cannot imagine the kind of pain you went through. I'm sure you've heard this before a thousand times, but you are brave and strong. I sincerely wish everything wonderful and beautiful for you."
