People Discuss The Names They'd Choose If They Could Rename Earth
Earth is the only planet not named after a Greek or Roman god or goddess.
Saturn was the Roman god of agriculture.Jupiter was the King of the Roman gods.
So, why Earth?
The easy answer is we don't know.
The name "Earth" is derived from English and German words, 'eor(th)e/ertha' and 'erde' which mean ground. But why it was attributed to the planet and by whom is unknown.
So, since there aren't any sentimental ties to the name, why not choose another?
Redditor Tall_Blacksmith_3190 asked:
"You can rename Earth. What would you name it?"

Comedian Hasan Minhaj Explains The Powerful Reason He Decided To Correct Ellen's Pronunciation Of His Name
Do you remember when Hasan Minhaj corrected Ellen DeGeneres on the pronunciation of his name?
It was around April, and it was one of my favorite moments from this year.
Ellen says Hasan's name wrong. Hasan says "No."
Ellen says "Yes." And then he teaches her how to say his name right.
It was a great moment and sparked a great conversation.

Recently, this moment was brought up again and contextualized on the Netflix show Patriot Act with Hasan Minhaj.
Hasan received a question about using the correct pronunciation of his name, and how difficult it is to switch back after years of an Americanized pronunciation.
And the response is as touching as it is funny.

From there, he explains his history with his name in the entertainment industry. At one point he used the name Sean because a host for an open mic show told him no one would be able to pronounce it.
He's slowly reclaimed his name, moving from 'Sean' to an Americanized version of 'Hasan' to finally holding people to pronouncing it correctly.
Minhaj is now standing strong on having his name pronounced right.

It's funny because his father chastised him for spending so much time on his name. Which is understandable, but it's also understandable why Hasan would push to have people say his name right.
As he explains it:
"I think that's the big difference between our generation and our parents' generation. They're always trying to survive... But I'm trying to live."
"So I'm gonna go on Ellen, the most American show ever, and make you hit all the syllables."
This move encouraged others to share their own stories about their names.

It's understandable in our society to not have an immediate grasp on a name you aren't familiar with. Despite the mixture of cultures in the U.S. there is still an insulating effect we have on foreign cultures influencing us.
However, if you refuse to make an effort to learn someone's name, you're doing more damage than you might think. It ranges from microaggression to an active erasure of someone's history.
Take the time to learn the right pronunciation. It's the simplest act of respect you can do.

Doctor's Hilariously Fitting Name Inspires People To Reveal Some Other Equally Bizarre Names
I think we can all agree that when someone's name is a little too "on the nose" in a novel, it can feel unrealistic.
Maybe you have a hard-nosed, stone worker named Flint, or a dark and brooding protagonist named Raven.
However, sometimes reality itself is unrealistic. I mean, a book on clinical neurology was written by a man named Lord Walter Brain. How much more "on the nose" can you get?
How about a doctor named Katherine Doktor?
With a last name like that, you really only have one choice, don't you? The image shows a news segment on local Fox 29, an interview with Dr. Katherine Doktor.
The image was shared to r/DunderMifflin, a subReddit board for jokes from the show The Office. In the show, Dwight tries to convince Michael that he has to leave for an appointment with his dentist, a man named Crentist.
The fact we have an actual doctor with the last name of Doktor, feels a lot closer though.
Maybe that's why she became a doktor - justkissitbunny

I used to work at Cooper Hospital and I would see her name all the time! Never failed to make me giggle :) - brit_garner
Dr. Doktor, gimme the news... - MapleDanish
Dr. Katherine Doktor is an infectious disease specialist with Cooper University Health Care. She was on the news segment to speak about the increase in patients her hospital has treated for flesh eating bacterial infections.
In the past two summers, her hospital has treated five patients with the infection, compared to only one in eight years prior. The cause of increased incidence is possibly linked to an increase in water temperature, the paper argues.
While this has serious implications, you likely don't have much to worry about if you're healthy.
Which is good, because it's far more fun to share stories about other people you know with perfect names for their profession.

No joke, there's a dentist in my town named Dr. Fang - dankbob_memepants_
One particular name has to take the cake. There exists in this world a Dr. Richard Chopp, with a specialty in vasectomies.
He goes by the name, Dick.
There is a vasectomy specialist in my town named Dr. Dick Chopp. He is officially Richard, but does go by Dick when ya meet him. - Iremembermy1stbeet
Yikes he's got a 2.5 star rating on google. - MissColombia
I guess the name holds true - WalrusDubstep
While Dr. Doktor wasn't an on the spot lie, like the dentist named Crentist, she still feels just as unbelievable. There are worse reactions to have to a name though.
Earlier this year, a meme spread where people shared the most common reactions to their names, with people often mispronouncing simple names, or making bad puns.
Whatever the case, Dr. Doktor will definitely stick out in people's minds.

Probably like "Ree-AH-nah," right?
Well according to Rihanna herself, that's actually not the right way to say her name.
In a video posted to British Vogue's Twitter account, Rihanna identified herself as "Ree-ANN-uh".
