Wait, What?: Foreigners Explain Which American Customs Make No Sense To Them
Reddit user thunderpower1999 asked: 'Non- Americans, what is an American custom that you find unusual or odd?'
When studying or learning about different countries and cultures, many Americans find themselves fascinated and/or perplexed by some of their customs and traditions.
Up to and including Canada having their Thanksgiving celebrations in October, Guy Fawkes night in England, or spitting on the bride for good luck at Greek weddings.
Many of these same Americans who scoff at the very idea of these customs might not stop to think that the tables can be easily turned, and visitors from abroad often find themselves in an equal state of confusion at some of our customs and traditions.
Redditor thunderpower1999 was eager to hear which American customs foreigners found to be the most baffling, leading them to ask:
"Non- Americans, what is an American custom that you find unusual or odd?"

It should be said that most Americans are equally confused, if not downright horrified, by many of the abovementioned customs.
Which begs the question, what keeps us living here?

Non-Americans Explain Which Things About America Confuse Them The Most
When Americans visit a foreign country, they tend to notice immediate cultural differences from the minute they step off the plane.
Unique bathroom designs, how you might have to be more specific when ordering coffee in Australia, how many businesses in Spain tend to shut down for a few hours to take a siesta.
Needless to say, this goes both ways, as when people from all over the world visit the United States, they tend to be surprised and amazed by a number of things.
Ranging from the amusing, such as portion sizes and ineffective tea brewing (at least for the Brits) to the truly baffling (HEALTHCARE).

Foreigners Explain Which Stereotypically American Things They've Always Wanted To Try
Most Americans think nothing of their humdrum daily activities or amenities available to them.
However, others with a different perspective might romanticize the things that are otherwise commonplace ideas and concepts for US citizens, like going to a diner or riding the school bus.
One Redditor looked to foreigners to hear of their American desires to respond to the following:
"Non-Americans of Reddit: what is an American thing you have always wanted to try?"
The things depicted in film really captivated foreign audiences.

My cousin told me she looks forward to visiting a Trader Joe's someday when she visits America for the first time.
Her bucket list option was hardly surprising. My parents used to bring treats from TJs as a novelty souvenir gift item, and my relatives ate it up. Literally.
Let's face it. The snacks at TJs rocks.
Even store locations in New York City would have ridiculously long lines during busy hours because the West-coast-based grocer was a novelty on the East Coast.
Every country has their own culture, and with that comes different ways to dress, different religious holidays, and of course, different kinds of food.
That food can be amazing. Most people love Chinese food. I practically lived on dumplings and lo mein in college. Meanwhile, my mom cooked Indian food for dinner every day, which prompted my best friend to spend all her time at my house in high school.
However, this is not always the case. Sometimes, certain foods can be hard to take, even if they are delicacies in their country of origin. Sometimes it's because of the taste. Other times, it's because of the ingredients.
In India, everyone loves chaprah chutney, a kind of spicy fruit sauce that adds flavor to every dish. However, in English, the dish is translated to "red ants chutney." Yes, the reason is because it includes dried, crushed red ants. Even growing up in Indian household didn't prepare me for this dish. I still haven't tried it!
Chaprah chutney isn't the only foreign delicacy tourists would hate.
Curious about what else may count, Redditor begon11 asked:
"What is your local delicacy that disgusts foreigners?"

"Oof, I’m a pretty adventurous eater but hakarl was definitely the worst thing I’ve ever put in my mouth. My husband and I made the mistake of ordering it in a restaurant, so an entire little glass dish full of it came out. I hate food wastage so we ate almost the entire thing. Taste alone wasn’t so bad — surprisingly mild — but as soon as I breathed in, it was just pure, concentrated cat pee filling up my nose, throat, mouth. And it felt like every bite of food I had later that night smelled/tasted vaguely like it because I kept breathing out that aroma…"
– astraelly
Some of these don't sound so bad. Some even sound good. However, it's understandable why tourists end up hating a lot of these dishes.
We all have different tastes, but being so different is what makes life interesting!
