People Share The Crimes That Were So Brutal They Still Give Them Chills
Reddit user Electrical-Lemon187 asked: 'What crime was so brutal you get chills just thinking about it?'
CW: Assault and abuse.
Everyone loves a good true crime mystery.
The number of documentaries and podcasts reporting on murder and mass madness has tripled over the years.
People still make Dateline NBC, 20/20, and 48 Hours must-see TV.
Some cases should be too brutal to watch.
Yet we can't help ourselves.
We just can't seem to get enough.
Redditor Electrical-Lemon187 wanted to discuss the true-life horror stories that keep us all awake at night, so they asked:
"What crime was so brutal you get chills just thinking about it?"
The following piece may be too much for some people.
The details are definitely NC-17.
Disgusting
"The murder of James Bulger, an English 2-year-old abducted, tortured, and murdered in 1993 by two 10-year-old boys. I can't get that sh*t out of my head."
AdmiralBofa
"I remember this popping up on Reddit again some point after I had my little boy. He was almost 3 at the time, and I couldn’t sleep that night imagining that happening to my little guy. That and Albert fish, I was so f**ked after hearing the full morbid podcast on it I hugged my son an obscene amount of times that day."
dawn855
Who are they?
"Really, really upset me more than a lot of others for some reason."
IgnorethisIamstupid
"Although it is almost certain that the murderer(s) can no longer be identified, all authors of the report [2007, very detailed] independently agreed on who the main suspect in the case was. However, his name was not mentioned out of consideration for his descendants. I don’t know how I feel about that choice."
maof97
On Tape
"The David Parker Ray's murders. The transcript of the tape he played for his victims was one of the hardest things I've ever read."
idreaminwords
"The worst part (in my opinion) is that on the FBI’s website, they have pages and pages of pictures of his trophies. Hundreds of photos of items that they believe belonged to women he tortured."
"None of the photos are of gore just items like pins and earrings. FBI’s photos It pains me that each of those items belong to someone who suffered the unimaginable. There is a large amount of Native American-made jewelry, Harley Davidson memorabilia, and even a medical alert bracelet."
Intrepid_Remote_6129
In Pennsylvania...
"Not the most brutal I've heard of, but one that affected my parents heavily. In Pennsylvania 20ish years ago, a man had his head blown off on live TV. 2 bank robbers put an explosive collar on a friend's neck, then made him rob a bank or they'd blow him up."
"Police catch and begin to arrest him, but he warns police about the bomb. Police wait for a bomb squad/orders on what to do, and reporters show up and start recording. Then the 2 robbers see their 'friend' on the news, and hit the detonator before he gives them away."
Spinerflame
One Dark Night
"Susan Powell and her children destroy me. Her husband axed the two boys and set the house on fire and they all died. Susan had gone missing a year(s?) earlier and it’s just figured at this point the husband did it but her body was never found. Horrific."
Broadway_is_Burning
"Agreed. This makes me sick to my stomach."
"Physically ill. We all know what he did to his wife and kids but I get sick when I think about the fact they dated. They had everyday interactions. They spent years together. Years of conversations, jokes, intimacy, etc… and for him to brutally murder them all one night? Especially because people knew him as this passive guy. Really f**ks me up."

What is wrong with the world?
How do some people become such monsters?
The Infamous
"Everything surrounding Jonestown. Once as a kid I caught a documentary about it on PBS, just straight over the antennae TV at maybe 8 pm and it was one of the most graphic things I've ever seen on TV."
AlanMorlock
"I listened to most of the tapes and they are a hard listen. I go wrong with trying to put myself in that place during the whole ordeal of living in Jonestown. The sad, climatic end to life there, as told through the death tape... it's very horrific. What's crazy is that there are still questions surrounding that awful day in November."
"The death tape was edited, notice that it goes from killing the children to Jim Jones announcing that they performed a mass suicide. Morbid curiosity would want me to know what happened during the whole ordeal. Then there's the day after tape, where it sounds like a man and a woman are watching a news report on the murders. Where did that come from and who recorded it? It's very strange and we may never know the answers or the full story."
BoxTalk17
Mandalay Bay
"The Vegas shooting. It's hard to imagine being in a killing field, I wouldn't know where to hide or run. Stuff like that creeps me the f**k out because nutbags seem to be everywhere."
LightningTF2
"I was just in Vegas in March. I smoked some weed for the first time in years because hey it's Vegas and it's legal. I sat in the chair that looked out of my hotel window and could NOT imagine what that would be like."
"When we walked towards Mandalay Bay later on that evening the feeling of dread hit me so hard that my wife and I turned around. Being a little high didn't help but either way, it felt like Vegas was acting like it didn't even happen. So wild."
iscreamconey
Take the Bus
"As a New Yorker, I get chills every time I see a story about some crazy person just shoving a random person onto the subway tracks, for no apparent reason. I've seen footage and security camera video, and the person is just standing there, minding their own business, and some psycho just jumps up and shoves them onto the tracks for no reason at all."
"Kids too. and if not for fast-acting well-meaning strangers, these people would have been killed instantly. In one video, the little girl was saved by a whisker. Gives me the creeps that there are psycho's out there that do these sorts of things."
The_REAL_McWeasel
The OG Evil
"I know this is bland, but Ted Bundy, how the hell did he manage to get away with 99% of the murders he committed."
gaydumba**3
"Just imagine being around back then. He escaped during one of his trials and during the manhunt to find him he murders people. It must've been such a crazy time."
due_the_drew
"Absolutely, and the fact he was charming made people think no more of him, and that was one his best perks, the fact he could lure you so easily is what made him such an effective killer."
gaydumbass3
Ted Bundy will never not be a part of the conversations surrounding the worst of the worst.
This list will kill my sweet dreams forever.
What Celebrities Were Really Like Before They Were Famous According To Their Friends
Many of your favorite film celebrities you adore and worship after watching them for years are still human beings... who can be a contradiction of how they're depicted in Hollywood.
While fame can certainly go to a once-aspiring actor's head, there are surprisingly plenty of luminaries that haven't forgotten where they came from.
Curious to hear of celebrities prior to their world-renowned status, Redditor RogueWolf300 asked:
"People of Reddit who knew celebrities before they were famous, how different do they act now?"
These actors haven't forgotten their humble beginnings.
Clumsy Drama Student
"I went to high school with Sandra Oh. She was funny, dynamic, smart, outgoing, and very into drama. In one school play, she played what I will call sort of a mime character - she didn’t have lines but was still a big part of the action, commenting on what was going on through her actions. Anyhow, in one scene as she was exiting the stage she banged her head on one of the props - you could hear the loud bang- but she was a pro and just carried on. It has been great to see her have such success, and I love that she has kept in touch with her close friends from high school (you can spot them at awards show sometimes)."
– mgov999
Restaurant Server
"Work in a restaurant about 15 years ago as a manager. Rachel McAdams walked in for an interview. She was still in acting school and serving table to pay for it. She worked at my restaurant over the course of the next 2 summers, serving on our patio. Still friends to this day. She hasnt changed a bit. Still bikes to get groceries."
– Pymm
Fantastic anecdotes continued being shared.
"Genius Dude"
"My Grandpa(RIP) owned a grocery store in Miami in the late 70s. Wesley Snipes and his friends once stole some candy from his store and when he caught them he let them have it. Since then Wesley and his friends were regulars. Once, Wesley left his bike in front of the store and it got stolen (was a pretty bad area). My grandpa gave him his old bike that he kept in the back of the store. My uncle took over in 2001 when my grandpa died. In 2007 he came back to the store while my uncle and cousin were there, to ask about my grandpa."
"My uncle said they talked for a little over an hour about how he my grandpa treated him like a son. When he found out my grandpa passed he felt guilty he didn’t visit sooner. He embraced my uncle and cousin and left. My uncle said he told him they plan on having the building repainted while they talked. About a week later a crew of painters arrived and told my uncle they were already paid to have the building repainted. Such a genuine dude."
– Shaka-Zulu1
A Much Sweeter Side
"My aunt used to work with Gordon Ramsay’s mother but never made the connection. Once they were out for lunch and he ended up coming in to see his mum and met my aunt in the process. She said he was so lovely and polite!! Plus my dad has a bunch of Gordon’s old jumpers he didn’t want anymore. Not signed or anything like that, it’s just a fun family story now."
– BaffledAndBemused
Successful Slacker
"This is real late and second hand but I knew someone who went to ACM with Ed Sheeran. He said he was lazy in class, skipped classes and just wanted to smoke weed, and my acquaintance was mad when Ed started getting more and more famous when Ed didn’t even bother with his music courses. I thought that was funny."
– lizziexo
Attractive And Shy
"Went to middle school with Meagan fox for a bit. She rode my bus and she mostly kept to herself. Most of the guys would fight over who was going to sit next to her but she was very shy and didn't really have much to say."
– binnygeo
Politeness goes a long way, and these actors never lost sight of that.
A Class Act
"I was local Production contact on Hugh Jackman’s touring theatre production where he sang his favourite numbers from various musicals. Usually when a show comes in with big name stars, the star usually has a bunch of assistants and they do the job they are paid to do and that’s it. The actor come on stage when needed then back to their dressing room and if you need anything or if they need anything you talk to the assistant. Prior to the first performance, I am on stage dealing with a few little issues, trying to stay on schedule when Mr. Jackman walks out on stage and my first thought was that he was going to be angry that we have kept him waiting to do his sound check. Instead he walks directly over to me, introduces himself asks me my name and asks a couple of questions and doesn’t even mention the delays."
"So we spoke for a few minutes and then he went around and introduced himself to more of the local crew. I was a little blown away by meeting him as I am a fan and thought that was really cool of him. Fast forward a week and I am backstage after the performance and I bump into Mr.Jackman in the hall, I say hi but don’t want to bother him but he stops me, he remembers my name (after meeting 100’s of people that week) and asks a few questions that related to our first conversation."
"Here’s the thing though. The guy just did a two hour performance and Instead of just politely returning my greeting he stopped and talked for a few moments with no false sincerity. To this day I am still blown away by how genuinely nice he was and always wondered what he was like before he became famous. He would also spend a huge amount of time after the show signing autographs and answering questions at stage door."
– Enrobg
Dreamy Hair
"I went to college with Joe Keery aka Steve Harrington in Stranger Things. He was my college boyfriend’s suite mate and just the nicest guy. His hair has always been dreamy and amazing. Last time I saw him was at a viewing of the Hateful Eight after we graduated and he still made a point to come over and say hi!"
– piggieees
Unforgettable Prom Date
"Friend of mine was friends with Tom Hanks in high school and went to prom with him. He still writes her personalized BDay cards on one of his typewriters."
– ScottishHeat
These celebrities managed to avoid having success go to their heads.
Still Sincere And Serene
"I went to Junior High with Norah Jones. She was the most sincere and serene person. She was fun to talk to and she never gave a hint of who her father was. The night she won all those Grammys was very telling that she hadn't changed a bit."
– anon
The Good Guy
"I went to high school with Mark Ruffalo. He was nice. He was 'one of those thespians.' Our high school had an acting group that challenged the students to get out of their shell and do things in front of strangers like introducing yourself as the wild fairy of the woods and presenting them with a flower."
"We didn’t talk much, but like I said, he was a good guy."
– vman4402
The entertainment industry is very bizarre in that the public persona celebrities project can either be very similar to who they are in real life or a stark contrast.
So when you hear stories of them doing normal, everyday things, it can be a jarring contradiction to the image of them you've had in your head.
That's Hollywood for ya.
People Break Down The Most Unexplainable Disappearances They've Ever Learned About
There's little more unsettling than noticing a "missing person" flyer.
Even if we don't know the person who's picture we're looking at, we still can't help but get chills.
As our mind begins to wonder what could have happened to them, with a slight inclination to assume the worst.
But perhaps the most sobering thought we have when we read or hear about someone's mysterious disappearance is the thought that it could happen to anyone we know.
Or even us.
"What are some of the most bizarre, and unexplainable disappearances that you know about?"
Beatriz Wink
"Brazil, 2012. Aparecida do Norte, a city famous for a giant Catholic Temple."
"An elderly catholic couple was in town as tourists, they went shopping for souvenirs and, the husband waited in line to pay for items, as his wife waited outside."
"When he left the store, she had vanished."
"Fast forward, he called his family, which lived in another state."
"Police, church, investigators, no one has ever found one single clue to what happened to her."
"Cameras, cars, phone calls, hotels, nothing."
"As if she was lifted to sky in the blink of an eye."
"The husband is still alive, his adult children keep searching for her."
"One of theirs children even talked to drug dealers, searched forest areas, and nothing."
"The appalling detail is that there is literally not one single hint of her whereabouts."
"The couple is called Delmar and Beatriz Winck."- fernandoteruo
Jason Jolkowski
"Jason Jolkowski was a 19-year old from Omaha who disappeared without a trace in June 2001 on his way to work."
"What’s baffling about the case is how quickly it happened."
"He was called into work at a fast food restaurant for an unplanned shift, took a shower, started walking to a high school a few blocks away to meet a co-worker who offered him a ride, and just vanished somewhere on that walk."
"People go round and round on internet message boards about what they think happened, but there have never been any clues to substantiate what happened."- retrometro81
Lars Mittank
"Lars Mittank still got me f*cked up bro."
"He’s just seen on an airport security camera and then SPRINTS out and scales a fence, runs into the woods and is never seen again."
" Why was he running?"
" What was he running from?"
"Where did he end up?"
"The whole thing is so confusing."- ullrmad13
Kelly Disney
"In 1984, a girl named Kelly Disney went missing after having a fight with her boyfriend at a party."
"A pair of officers were among the last people to see her, and they said she told them she was walking to a friend's house."
"Her family searched for her, but the cops deemed her a runaway, so the case went cold."
"10 years later, someone finds a skull in a car at the reservoir where people went to party."
"He went to take it to the police station, but it was Saturday so they were closed."
"So what did he do?"
"He took it home and WASHED IT WITH DISHSOAP."
"They were able to confirm it was Kelly Disney's skull, and that there were signs of trauma, but it lead nowhere."
"Some locals believe it was the boyfriend."
"Others think there may have been a serial killer in the area, as 4 more girls went missing after Kelly."
"All of them went missing while walking at night, although two of the girls were taken together."- row-oak

"His car is found at the courthouse in Amarillo."
"Four days later he’s the victim of a hit-and-run as he’s walking on the side of the highway in Moxee, Washington."
"It takes over 10 years to identify his body and no one knows how he got there or why he was in Washington."
"There’s a lot of weird details in this one."
"He was a lawyer and had expressed fear to his wife that his life was in danger."
"Worth reading up on!"- meany_beany
Glen And Bessie Hyde
"Glen and Bessie Hyde."
"Back in the late 1920s, the newlywed couple attempted to kayak the rapids of the Grand Canyon, but both disappeared without a trace."
"Their kayak was found with much of their equipment in it, but the trail quickly went cold."
"50 years later, a kayaking guide was taking a group of tourists down the Colorado River and told them about the disappearance of the Hydes."
"An older woman in the group chimed in, claiming to be Bessie, and describing in detail how Glen had been abusive, and so she killed him, but she later recanted the story."
"A couple decades later, another woman known for rafting the Grand Canyon passed away, and her friends found the Hydes' marriage certificate among her belongings, leading to speculation that the late guide may have actually been Bessie under another name."
"Despite these theories and speculation, the case remains unsolved."
"There's a podcast called National Park After Dark that discusses all kinds of deaths, disappearances, and other such events in national parks around the world, and I would highly recommend their episode on this case."- MasteringTheFlames
Disappearing Scout
"The kid was never seen again."
"They searched with hundreds of people for weeks and only ever found 1 of his socks about a half mile away."
"What kills me is that the camp site was so close to the lake, we're talking almost within sight, his dad even watched him walk most the way and reminded him which path to take."
"There have been a few podcasts and stuff about the case but unfortunately no closure."
"Such a great family and it kills me that this happened."- USCplaya
Unexplained Death In Louisiana
"To be fair this did happen fairly recently, July 2022, but my cousins mother died."
"She's not my aunt because this is a 3rd cousin but yeah."
"Heres some backstop before I explain what happened."
"This is in a very small town in Louisiana, I have a cousin and he has a little brother."
"Their mother was addicted to drugs and would sleep around with married men to get some drugs, most people in this town were addicted to drugs, not sure why, so she would sleep around A LOT, there's that."
"I also only know her fate because my mom told me because I talk to my cousins."
"Anyway onto the actual story."
"After I hadn't heard about her in years my mom comes to let me know that she was found floating in a river on the edge of town."
"She hardly had any skin and what was left of it was all puffy and sh*t."
"For the record this was mostly caused by the fact that corpses decompose faster in water."
"So they couldn't identify her by facial features or fingerprints."
"Someone had taken all her teeth out before so they couldn't check her teeth but of course, DNA was still present."
"Thats how they figured put it was the mother of my cousins."
"Nobody is sure what happened to her, no one knows what killed her."
"And yes murder cases usually do take a while to solve but quite the mystery to me."- Galaxy_Wolf_16

"It disappeared from all radars in Malaysia and Vietnam."
"And by looking some data it had appeared that it deviated from its path and flew to the Indian Ocean, where it last signal was received."
"Many researched were conducted, but nothing was found."
"The only clues we have are some pieces of the airplane that ended up washing in shores of African countries."- TheBreadCat
Henry McCabe
"Henry McCabe and the creepy voicemail."- Wilsson02
Disappearing Best Friend
"This is a personal story."
"I had a friend, who I'll call David, who I had known since our family moved to a new house when I was 7."
"We were neighbors, but went to different schools."
"We became friends quickly after our shared love of Lego Star Wars and Outer Space."
"Everyday after school, and I'm talking LITERALLY everyday, I would ask if we could hang out."
"I was politely told no about eight out of ten times, but I still tried asking anyway."
"Flash forward to the penultimate day of fourth grade, and I ring his doorbell, but no one answers."
"I didn't think much of it, so I just went back home."
"The next day I was super pumped to hang out with David, as it was his last day as well, and his parents said that he would be able to hang out that day."
"I once again, rang their doorbell, and got an answer this time."
"Although, I didn't recognize who it was, but I later found out it was David's uncle."
"When I asked if I could come inside to hang out, he nervously laughed and said no and then closed the door.'
"I got really bummed and felt betrayed."
"A couple of hours later, I saw cop cars arrive at David's house."
"The next hour is a bit fuzzy, but from what I can remember, my parents told me to go to my room and they went out to see what was going on."
"I was really tired and fell asleep after that, and when I woke up it seemed like everything had gone back to normal."
"I walked down the stairs and saw my parents at the dining room table, seemingly waiting for me to come down."
"In unison, they asked me to come sit down with a somber-sounding tone in their voice."
"When I sat down, they explained to me that on the third to last day of school, David disappeared."
"I know it sounds weird that they just said that to a nine year old without sugar coating it, but by this time I had learned about concepts like death and disappearances and was pretty desensitized to it."
"The rest of that day was weird."
"Hell, that summer was weird."
"I prayed at night hoping that David would return, but he never did."
"It wasn't until I was 13 when I learned how truly bizarre the case was."
"It was like he completely vanished without a trace."
"This was suburbia too, might I add."
"No forest, No hills, just houses."
"There was no place you could go without somebody seeing you."
"There was also little to no media coverage about it."
"His parents were questioned, but it was clear they had no idea what happened to him."
"His mom was especially distraught, rightfully, and ended up moving out when I was 11."
"That house has gone through several owners since, but it doesn't feel the same without him."
"I'm now almost 16 and miss him everyday."- signi678
It's sad to think that the fates of all of these people remain a mystery.
Sadder still for all their families, who never have, and likely never will, get the closure they deserve.
We knew them when.
Famous people have to be from somewhere.
It feels like they're aliens and are unreachable.
But they're real and they have origins in some unlikely places.
Most towns, schools, etc, have a few people they can say... walked these streets.
Redditor VirindiPuppetDT wanted to hear about who is your town's claim to fame.

And even when we don't feel sexy, maybe there will be people who still think we are.
Redditor Debonair-Redditor21 wanted to hear about famous crushes that enter into the "Harold & Maude" territory. They asked:
"Who is the oldest celebrity that you still find attractive?"
All Hail Dame Helen Mirren. Is there anything else to say?
How Old?

"Omg. I saw the BEST suggestion for a movie ever. Elvira & Dolly Parton playing their stage personas as estranged sisters who must team up to fight evil."

"Live and Let Die. Incredible, and she'll always be in my mind as Elise McKenna, the woman so beautiful that Christopher Reeve's character went back to be with her in Somewhere in Time. I totally get the desire."

Hey Su...

"Plot twist: She sang 'Walk Like an Egyptian' because she's immortal and actually lived in Ancient Egypt."
RealisticDelusions77
"She was my first crush. As a child, I used to watch MTV for hours just for that moment when she cut her eyes in the 'Walk Like an Egyptian' video."

"Marisa Tomei."
LiveShowOneNightOnly
"Jesus, I was so confused watching the new Spider-Man movies with Marisa as Aunt May. Marisa Tomei is perpetually the hot 80s chick in my head, also Jennifer Connelly. I was watching Morbius and seeing Requiem for a Dream and Career Opportunities. I AM OLD, I GUESS."

"Christopher Plummer, right up until the day he died at 92."

"I first saw ‘The Sound of Music’ as a child, watched in many times, know if off by heart etc. I didn’t watch for many years."
"Then as an adult I wanted to introduce a friend’s kid to it, put it on, and spent the next couple of hours absolutely dumbstruck by how hot Christopher Plummer was. It had never struck me before that time but go**amn have I never forgotten. No wonder Maria chose the Captain, if I had to choose between him and God I know who my pick would be."

Hey Tim!
"Timothy Olyphant. Idk what it is about him. He's so funny, charming, and handsome that I don't care how much older than me he is."
throwaway-getaway122
"I do NOT get tired of watching him; he is so expressive. In Catch and Release there's a scene where he and Jennifer Garner are having a conversation that consists entirely of gestures and facial expressions. Hilarious!"
BugsRatty
"He is amazing in Justified and Deadwood... hell, pretty much everything. I think I just found out I may have a man-crush on the dude lol."

"Oof that's kind of a hard one. Without looking up a bunch of older actors I think I'd have to go with Ken Watanabe. I think he's in his early 60s now and the last time I saw a recent pic of him he was still looking fine AF. And an honorable mention is Steve Carell... I don't know what it is but he keeps getting hotter with age. I was never attracted to him until he did that silver fox photo shoot with the paint brush 'n shi*t."
total class act...
"Stanley Tucci. As my mom says about handsome men, he just looks like he smells good."
vonye25
"He visited our hotel a few weeks ago. As the Restaurant Manager I was specifically told that my team and I were not to treat him any different to other guests, which we don't."
"The guy was a total class act polite, courteous, and always keen for a chat. Never mentioned his movies, his career, but was there to enjoy time with his family, and they themselves were also a joy to be around. Can confirm he always had a slight aroma of warm cinnamon."

"Monica Bellucci. I may just be a bit pickier than most though."

"I can’t think of a hotter character than her as Persephone in the Matrix Reloaded."
"I literally had to rewatch those scenes to absorb the plot because every scene she was in was too distracting. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/E_V56qDUcAEoeZL.jpg:large PS. Totally off topic, but I always shipped her and Keanu in the movie and real life. Imagine how blindingly beautiful their offspring would be!"

"Pierce Brosnan."

"Alternatively, Timothy Dalton, and in the same way. Both Bond men that I found meh during their tenure, but the older they got, the hotter they became. Pierce is at his peak now and I haven’t seen Dalton since Penny Dreadful but he was such a daddy on that show."
