People Break Down The Worst Double Standards They've Ever Heard
Reddit user No-Challenge-3305 asked: 'What's the stupidest double standard you ever heard from someone?'
A double standard is defined as:
"a code or policy that favors one group or person over another"
However not all double standards are formalized. Most of the double standards individuals face daily are based on customs, stereotypes, traditions or other less formal societal codes of conduct.
Double standards are inherently unfair to one or sometimes both parties.
They may exert control or compliance with gender or socioeconomic stereotypes on everyone or serve to repress one group while favoring the other. But they shouldn't be confused with all unequal rules.
The sign at the amusement park that says "you must be this tall to ride" is there for a very good reason.
Double standards fail to pass any logic test, with some being more ridiculous than others.

My Time Vs. Your Time
"I had a production manager who would come in late and leave early most days and then make problems for anyone who needed a half day for anything."
~ TheGreatGrappaApe
Giphy"My first manager at my current job was a harda** about hours. Would basically say 'There's the door' if you asked to leave early or come in late, no matter how rare or needed the occurrence was."
"Always talked about how dedicated he was."
"Dude would roll in at 9:30 leave at 11:00 for lunch. Get back at 1:00 and go home at 3:00."
"He constantly talked about how he just LIVES at work... even though we were all there, and he had been seen at the golf course every day."
"One of the funniest moments was when our client was parked behind him, and needed my manager to move his truck to be able to leave, but said 'I'm not gonna ask him to move his truck, because I'm afraid he'll just leave'."

Boys Will Be Boys
"My ex believed that teen girls who fall pregnant while still in school should be expelled and not allowed to finish school at all."

~ boekieblaker21
Piety Not In Practice
"My aunt calls me a sl*t for wearing short skirts."
"She doesn't know who the father of two of her three children is."

It's Only An Entitlement If Someone Else Gets It
"My FIL served in Vietnam. When he came home, he used the G.I. Bill to get a free college degree (in social work)."
"He didn't like being a social worker, so he spent much of his adult life working as an appliance salesman, an electrical supply salesman, or (for significant chunks of time) was unemployed."

~ Head-Roll6309
"The responses I got to being cheated on from coworkers were different. I was blamed by other people for not giving her what she needed so obviously she should go out and cheat to get those things."
"And I responded with 'Do you think the same about men cheating?'."
"'Of course not. Men cheat because they can't be trusted and will f'k anything they can. Women cheat because they are being mistreated by men and it's his fault she has to go out and do that'."
"Was a great comment to me, the panic attack filled person whose life was falling apart and entire world was destroyed by her cheating."
"I left that workplace pretty soon after those comments."
~ polorat12
TMI, Dude
"Dude I worked with felt I needed to know that he'd have to have a wife and a mistress because he didn't want someone who sucked his d*ck kissing the kids."

~ Azzizzi
"My ex-wife would get visibly angry when I wasn't in the mood but she was."
"More than once I'd ask her like 'you know how messed up it would be if these roles were reversed, right? If I got mad at you for not being in the mood?'."
"And her response was just 'well, you're a guy'."
~ AutoDefenestrator273
"Ugh, it sucks that you went through that, and I'm sorry. The idea that men want sex all the time no matter what is so damaging."
"Everyone is allowed to not want sex, and I wish people would stop acting entitled to other people's bodies."
"Even when people aren't reacting with anger if a male partner turns down sex, this myth still causes real damage in relationships. I know both men and women who've expressed fears that they're broken or their relationship is somehow dying if the woman has a higher libido or even if the male partner turns down sex once."
"It's awful and I really wish people would stop buying into this idea."
~ VinnyVinnieVee
And Now For Something A Little Lighter...
After these serious topics, let's end on a lighter note.
Unless you're a cat.

~ Dmahf0806
Giphy"Growing up, we had a cat who was a grand lady but she was kind of a chonk. Pleasingly chonky."
"We took her to the vet for a regular checkup and got a different than usual vet, who came in and said, 'Whoa, well let's look at this little porker!'."
"My parents and I all got mad instantly. We were allowed to joke about her weight. No one else was."
"That's the rule. Also 'porker' sounds so rude."
~ SageThistle

People Break Down The Most Hypocritical Things That No One Seems To Mind
I'm cool about it...
Image by Sammy-Williams from Pixabay |
I hate hypocrites. They are the bane of my existence. All you have to do is stand behind your words. How hard is that? You said them. I especially get peeved when people bloviate on a topic and condemn and holler but then when it comes to them doing it... silence.
Redditor u/ErrForceOnes wanted to know about the moments people chose to curiously "pay no mind" by asking... What is a GIANT hypocrisy that no one seems to mind?Hypocrisy is everywhere; it's like a disease. And sadly everyone does it. Some of us indulge in smaller doses than others. But some people live their life by it. Like how can you support civil servants, like police, firefighters, etc... yet try to find ways to hide money in order to not pay taxes? Tell me... I'll wait.
Manga...

Asian moms too! Not only that if you try to not eat, they make to go containers for you. Oh, sorry I have to leave, RUNS AT LEAST HAVE SOME FRUIT.
Phonies...
Celebrities positioning themselves as champions for social justice while launching a clothing line with no comment on the labor conditions their garments are made in.
Sexy Times...
The Porn Industry
Why is prostitution considered a crime, but it becomes perfectly legal once a camera is put beside them?
I think the first amendment helps with that one. There's been many a supreme-court case about whether porn is protected speech.
Mirror, Mirror on the Wall...
You can get away with WAY more crap, in general, when you're attractive.
But we all kind of aspire to attractiveness and it's not like it's attractive people's fault, exactly. So what is there to be done?
So true. Money and beauty are treated like virtues and they aren't. They're luck of the draw. It probably helps you to be a better person if people assume that you are gentle and clever just by looking at your face or wallet.
KIDS
GIF by MOODMANGiphyPeople screaming at you if you don't want Kids and Kids are the greatest thing in the World and then turn around and whine how expensive they are and how annoying yadda yadda.
Yeah see... humans are a mess. And too often then not, personal conviction and dignity are just a myth, or a punchline. Double standards have always been a way of life. And many of us have begrudgingly learned to navigate.
Fashion
Fashion Model GIF by NYFW: The ShowsGiphyIf a skinny person wears something out of the ordinary, it's a fashion statement and awesome. It can even just be something like a crop top or overalls.
But God forbid a fat person wear the same thing.
Distractions
The hypocrisy hypocrisy. People love to call it out but rarely notice it on themselves and if they notice it then it's something completely different or a distraction.
That's the worst. I hate that I have to hate that. But if I don't hate it, then the hate will just continue. So, really, my hate comes from my love of an end to hate. So anyone who hates my hate hates love. And we must hate anyone who hates love!
My Morality
My own personal hypocrisy; When I was a lot less well off financially, delivering pizzas trying to get through college, I kept a cup of coins in my car. When a homeless person would approach me for spare change, I gave them the cup. Most of the time it was nearly full, so there was probably 20-30 dollars in there.
Now that I have a good salaried job, even if I've got a few bucks in my wallet, I tend to not even make eye contact anymore. I know it's awful, I know it makes me crappy, but the last 4-5 years have made me a jaded craphead towards people in general. I used to be so hopeful and I wanted to help everyone, and tried to live a life that reflected that.
Now, while my general and political morality is pretty much the same, my personal morality has gotten more grey. I'd jaded, I hate people, I assume the worst of people I used to assume the best of. I don't really care about the strangers around me like I used to, but I still expect everyone else to.
Placing Blame
Victim mentality.
It's so freaking frustrating when it becomes entrenched. "You did this, it's your fault" "you should've known to do x, its your fault" Yeah bro your problems aren't my problems and if all you do is make excuses and blame me for them, it's not going to be my fault when you don't develop as a person and accomplish your dreams. I'm sure they'll find someone to blame though.
In D.C.
Donald Trump Reaction GIF by Election 2016GiphyPoliticians work part time, are given free housing, education, and health care, and exempt from the everyday violence we experience, but refuse to lift a finger to help us.
At this points most people running for a position in the government are only in it for the benefits of being a politician and the amount of money they can embezzle. Well in my country at least.
Just speak a truth and live it. Yes, it maybe hard. But what part of life isn't? Hypocrisy is just lying. Plain and simple. And it's a sin to lie.

Just because double standards proliferate our everyday lives does not make it okay.
People see examples where men and women are treated or judged accordingly. But a glaring disparity becomes evident when the gender roles swap.
When males fly, they are "Superman" whereas, when females fly they are a witch.
But doubles standards aren't limited to sexism.
People shared their examples of the phenomena when Redditor piano_043 asked:
"What double standards annoy the sh*t out of you?"
Rules
Sure, there are exceptions to certain rules, but where do you draw the line when the person of authority setting the rules frequently breaks them?
School Deadlines
"Professors who have strict deadlines but don't grade anything."
"I find it even more annoying in high school. The teacher will say 'I won't do X, because I have a life, and I don't want to use my free time on my weekend to do that'. Cool, fair enough. I get it, you work for the time you get paid for. But then ... 'You had all weekend to work on this!'. Like, wtf, is the weekend time for the school system or not? You can't choose one when you want it, and another when you don't."
Crime & Punishment
"people stealing millions get no or less jail time than someone who stole couple of dollars"
All Talk
"Preaching about saving the environment but doing the absolute bare minimum to change it."
Smoke Breaks
"If I took as many extra breaks at work as a smoker does, I'd get fired."
"I had a job where this guy would go out every hour, on the hour for 5 minutes in an 8 hour shift every day of the week to smoke."
"That's over 3 hours of extra break time per week I wasn't getting as a non smoker."
"That's over 173 hours of extra break time per year I wasn't getting as a non smoker."
"That's like an extra week of paid vacation per year in just smoking cigarettes."
Culture Wars
"Cancel culture double standards. Certain people have been canceled for saying something stupid like 10 years ago, and yet somehow Chris Brown is still a successful musician even though he did far worse than most people society has 'canceled.' It doesn't make any sense to me."
Awards
"The Oscars. It seems like sometimes, it's awarded to an actor because 'it's their time or they are overdue' or just based on popularity or a makeup award, while other times it's 'this is the performance of the year and no one else is worthy.' It should go to the best acting performance all the time, not just because people think it's this actor's best, only, or last chance at winning the award."
Appearance Guidelines
"School dress codes. The horror that a females bra strap is slightly visible!!!!!!!!!"
Sexism
When men can't catch a break when in the presence of kids.
Father Time
"Aww look, dad is babysitting while mom has a day off"
"No I'm NOT. I am the father and I am wanting to spend time with my children when I have time available. That's not babysitting. That's being a caring, loving, responsible father."
"Demeaning On All Sides"
"This one drives both me and my husband nuts. He's being a parent. Also, he gasp actually wants to spend time with the small human we chose to create. The flipside is also frustrating - he's a superhero or babysitter when he takes her to the park, but I'm a woman so I should just magically be able to handle all her needs and God forbid I take 10 seconds on my phone when I "should be" having quality time with my kid (never mind the fact that dad's right there and she's really focused on the leaves at the moment)."
"It's so insidious and demeaning on all sides."
Popularity
"Having to act differently around kids just because I'm a guy. I work at a camp and a dance class, and both my senior counselor and dance instructor gave me talks about how to act around kids."
"I'm 6'1" and I have a beard and long hair, and for some reason kids love me. And I really like playing with kids. But I can't do very much with them. The female staff can hug the kids and hold their hands when walking with them, no problem. But then the kids want to hug me and hold my hand, and I can't do it because I'm too big and scary and I'll look like a creep. So it kinda hurts when I can't play around with kids just because I'm a guy."
"Also, this all happened before [the virus], when hugging and holding hands was not an issue. Just to clarify."
Play Time
"If women make faces or try to play with random kids it cute, but when men want to play with random kids they are seen as predators."
Making Memories
"And the women who think dads are creeps watching their next victim when they're just taking a photo of THEIR child having fun at the playground for memory's sake."
Girly Things
"Girl enjoys girly things - People: Oh you're so basic and not progressive. Girl enjoys traditionally masculine things - People: Oh, she's just trying to fit in with the men and she hates other women. Must be one of those 'not like other girls' girls. It's so frustrating. I feel every one of my hobbies is subjected to this extra layer of scrutiny and judgement."
Racism
Victims of harassment aren't always innocent of the same offense.
Being Asian
"Racism seems to only apply to black people. Growing up if you said a racial slur to a black student in school, you were in serious trouble. However you say a racial slur to me (south Asian) the teacher might tell you to cut it out. In the Army, no one dared say a racial slur or anything racist to a black soldier. That would end your career. However, racist 'jokes' and slurs were said to me on a daily basis. No one seemed to intervene. If I threatened to complain to EO they would probably stop, but then I'm on everyones sh*t list for being too sensitive and not being able to take a joke. However no one would ever even attempt this type of thing with the black soldiers."
False Claim
"I'm part Asian myself and one day a girl i knew was saying some pretty harsh stuff about the Chinese, i called her out on being kinda racist and she dropped the bomb 'Asians can't suffer racism, they ain't black' i was in complete shock at how someone could possibly have negative IQ and still trying to be smug."
Deportation Jokes
"the same thing happened with me and I'm Mexican. people were allowed to call me beaner and tell me I needed to be deported but somehow I was the one that always got in trouble for being upset."
One example I can't stand is the perception that men aren't allowed to cry because it's a sign of weakness.
This sexist view is deeply ingrained in my culture where the men in my father's generation were told to keep their sentimental emotions bottled up inside and that they should leave it up to the women to get emotional because "it's what they do."
The dangerous mentality screwed with my head in my formative years. If I ever had a moment of weakness and shed a tear, I felt extremely ashamed – which further plummeted me into confusion and despair.
So yeah, double standards suck.
We don't have to look very far to spot hypocricy.
It seems that everywhere we go, there is a bizarre hierarchy of rules and expectations.
You're in the top layer of power or wealth?
You get certain rules.
Occupying more of a middle zone?
Your rules are a little different, a little more restrictive.
It can be so infuriating when double standards are as obvious as they are problematic.
And the worst part?
Usually, the person who benefits from the hypocrisy is so powerful and emboldened that they don't even have the decency to be subtle about it.
Redditor Meet_Me_In_Heaven was curious what tripped people's triggers, so they asked:
"What double standard disgusts you?"

Business professional for both sexes suck.
- Men: locked into three layers of clothing. Undergarments, a shirt, a jacket and a tie. Plus matching pants. You either overheat OR you sweat into your shirt/jacket. Your arms are pretty much uncomfortable and not to mention spilling stuff on yourself - you'd have to deal with the three layers.
Women: A reasonably lengthy skirt, a blouse, pantyhose and a face full of makeup. You either freeze to death (there is no amount of clothing that is comfortable like that) or you have to sit uncomfortably for the rest of the day, your pantyhose can run (you can accidentally rip it or worse), and the shoes pinch and you can never have comfortable feet. And you can either sweat off your makeup OR constantly try to reapply your makeup. Not to mention that "good" makeup costs $$$$$$. Otherwise it never lasts on your face. astrangeone88

The irony is that they are paying for other people's healthcare and just haven't taken 10 seconds to think about it. That's literally what health insurance is, by definition. Just had an argument with my mom. She thinks it's ok to scream at someone's face but it isn't ok for a man to do it back. Now we has no fam. BadCat115
My parents liked to do something similar. Even if you didn't raise your voice, if they just perceived something rude about what you said or didn't like the tone you spoke in they would scream for 15 minutes minimum and be mad for the rest of the week.
Now they can't seem to understand why 2/3's of their children won't even speak to them. thotwater91
