I may not be popular for saying this, but I think comedy is the best form of entertainment.
However, it’s not always easy to find great comedy.
There are lots of comedians who make me smile or even make me laugh at a joke or two. Yet, it’s really hard to find a comedian who can keep me laughing through their whole set.
If you’re having trouble finding those kinds of comedians, or are just ready to find a new comedian to enjoy, Redditors are here to help.
Probably hoping to find a great comedian themself, Redditor Plastic_Ad_6179 asked:
"Who's the best comedian of all time in your opinion?"
Sean Lock
"Sean Lock"
"For many reasons, but mainly for being the undisputed champion of the world in...Carrot In A Box:"
– Rymundo88
"What a HUGE talent. Luckily he left a lot of great footage. Terrible loss."
– Pan-tang
"The comedians comedian"
– FrederickBishop
George Carlin
"George Carlin."
"Honorable mention to Bill Burr."
– gobigred3562
"When I turned 21, my mom took me to Vegas. We saw Carlin perform and we laughed solidly for 90 minutes. I don’t remember any of the jokes, but I have never laughed like that since. He was a true master of the art."
– drCrankoPhone
"Carlin is the only correct answer. Nobody will ever touch that level of wit, wordplay, satire, and social commentary."
"Nobody."
– reflUX_cAtalyst
Mike Birbiglia
"I went to a Mike Birbiglia show at Zanies in Nashville back in 2008. Guy killed…got up on stage, told 1 story. Took him 90 minutes to get through that story. The whole time, he’s veering off on tangents that seemed completely natural, conversational even. Each tangent was a tiny hilarious story itself. The show seemed so smooth and flowed so naturally, that I could hardly believe it was written. It was masterful. Sure, he doesn’t tell jokes that leave you breathless with laughter, but he does tell jokes that get 90% of the way there with such consistency that I’m actually more impressed with that than the former."
– mavol
Norm MacDonald
"In terms of:"
- "Being at the top of his game for a long period of time"
- "Being perfect at timing and execution"
- "Understanding comedy to a degree that other comedians notice and respect"
- "Being clever and witty on the spot"
- "Having memorable jokes and killer standup routines"
"Norm MacDonald"
– warpus
"My favorite story about Norm MacDonald I've heard is that when he was coming up if he bombed he'd wait in the back of the club after the show to shake everyone's hand in their way out. If he killed he wouldn't. What a legend."
– SixPieceTaye
"If you asked a group of comedians who their favorite comedian is I'd bet Norm would be near the top of the list. So much of his material was a deconstruction of comedy itself. If Norm MacDonald tells you a bad joke, and you laugh, is it still a bad joke? Why is it funny? Are you laughing at him or is he laughing at you?"
– foldingcouch
Mitch Hedberg
"Mitch Hedberg. RIP."
– onepotatotwopotato3
"I used to love that guy. I still do but I used to too."
– ChefHannibal
""I got in an argument with a girlfriend inside of a tent. That’s a bad place for an argument, because I tried to walk out, and had to slam the flap.""
""F**k you, zzzzzzzzzzip""
– StarktheGuat
Monty Python
"Monty Python, as a group."
"I don't think there's been a single more influential comedy act than Flying Circus."
– EarlyBirdsofBabylon
"I agree with it just because it’s one of the few non-American mentions here. People seriously think that humor ends on American Stand Up and television…"
"Also Monty Python is ALWAYS funny"
– RockThePlazmah
Robin Williams
"Robin Williams."
– Flicksterea
"Live on Broadway stands as one of the most memorable things I have ever watched."
– Grimlock64
"Idk why he isn’t higher on this list or mentioned more often. Robin Williams had absolutely insane improv skills. Watch the episode of Who’s Line with him as the guest star, the rest of the cast can’t keep it together."
– _xXmyusernameXx_
Lucille Ball
"Lucille Ball"
– LusciousofBorg
"Scrolled this far to find a female comedian! Love Lucille Ball"
– boonybun
"I saw I Love Lucy was streaming a couple months ago. Having watched it as a kid, I figured I’d put it on for a nostalgic chuckle. I was not ready for that show to be so, so funny—I nearly passed out I was laughing so hard."
– mypantsareawesome
"She was a comedic genius."
– DrWorm_DD
Rowan Atkinson
"Rowan Atkinson (John Cleese closely second)"
– DarkFluids777
"Atkinson is such an amazing physical comedian that it’s basically overlooked that he’s a first-rate stand-up, as well."
– HilariousSpill
Eddie Murphy
"Eddie Murphy"
– onterrible1
"He saved SNL. They wouldn't be on air today were it not for Murphy"
– Blackgurlmajik
"Goat of comedy"
– IndependenceScary644
Comedy may not be everyone’s favorite form of entertainment, but it is a can’t miss, so long as the comedian in question is a good one.
Luckily, we’ve got some great suggestions above.
I can't stand Adam Sandler films most of the time. They're a little juvenile for me to be honest, not that he hasn't made some comedies I enjoyed (The Wedding Singer and 50 First Dates come to mind).
But Sandler can also turn in an excellent dramatic performance from time to time. Check out Punch-Drunk Love some time. He and Emily Watson have some startling chemistry. More recently, Uncut Gems demonstrated how Sandler can thrive in a film of an even darker nature.
He won significant acclaim for both and is a perfect example of an actor best known for comedies who showed that they also happen to be an excellent dramatic actor.
There are others, of course. We heard more about them after Redditor 40oz2_freedom asked the online community,
"Who is a good comedic actor that ended up being a great dramatic actor?"
John Goodman
"John Goodman. His performance in 10 Cloverfield Lane was nothing short of perfection. The look of pure evil in his eyes when he killed that guy was horror at it's finest."
toothfixingfiend
John Goodman is on fire in this film. An unnerving film and probably the sleeper hit of 2016.
Bob Odenkirk
"Bob Odenkirk. He seems kinda surprised about it, watching his interviews. But damn he does both well in the same role."
Dangercakes13
He is magnificent. The universe of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul is magical for his talents.
Olivia Colman
"Olivia Colman. Loved her in Hot Fuzz but was pleasantly surprised by her in The Favourite."
[deleted]
A wonderful and versatile actor. If you really want to see her in one of the most harrowing dramas of the last decade, check her out in Tyrannosaur.
Kurt Russell
"Kurt Russell was a Disney comedy actor for about 10 years until he did a TV movie about a mass shooter then hooked up with John Carpenter."
efs120
He has quite the legacy behind him. It's easy to forget how big of a name he's been for four decades now.
Hugh Laurie
"Hugh Laurie. Went from A bit of Fry and Laurie to Blackadder and then out of nowhere, House MD and then again with Night Manager."
[deleted]
Hugh Laurie is a wonderful actor. How he doesn't have at least a few Emmy Awards is beyond me.
"Woody Harrelson. Great on Cheers and now has had several Oscar nominations."
[deleted]
The People v. Larry Flynt is true art. What a role! His others, including The Messenger and Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri truly show what he can do.
Tom Hanks
"Tom Hanks, if you remember him from his early career in the early 1980s, he was a talented comedy actor... but no way would I have imagined him doing dramas, let alone starring in them, let alone a string of hits."
[deleted]
Tom Hanks in The Money Pit and Big and Tom Hanks in Philadelphia and Cast Away might as well be two different people!
Jon Hamm
"I gotta go for Jon Hamm on that one. I don't think he has even one line of comic relief in the entirety of Mad Men, but then he's over the top hilarious in stuff like Kimmy Schmidt."
[deleted]
Jon Hamm is a riot. Comparing his work in Bridesmaids to his work in Mad Men shows how dynamic he is a performer.
Robin Williams
"Robin Williams. His performance in One Hour Photo is creepy as hell. Dude was absolutely a phenomenal actor no matter the genre. Insomnia has another great performance of his as well."
[deleted]
Probably the best example. His work in The Fisher King is a masterclass of dramatic acting, to say nothing of One Hour Photo and Good Will Hunting, among others.
Joseph Gordon-Levitt
"Joseph Gordon-Levitt has come a long way from his “3rd Rock from the Sun” days."
macaronsforeveryone
He really has! The same guy who did 3rd Rock from the Sun went on to star in some hard-hitting dramatic films like Manic and Mysterious Skin.
If you haven't seen any of these, you might as well get on them. Trust–you're in for a treat and it's great to see actors show just how far they can take their talents!

Comedians are always pushing the envelope when delivering what they think is hilarious on paper.
Certain forms of comedy like roasts, dark humor, and one-liners for the sake of having shock value are all risky, but if the jokes are clever to start and delivered smartly, comedians can really knock it out of the park.
Or they could really have a negative impact on audiences.
Curious to find out about the boundaries within the world of standup, Redditor thebosomofthePacific asked:
"What should be off-limits in comedy?"
Pranks are a popular comedy tactic, but the result isn't always a laughing matter.
Unwilling Participants
"Pranks on people who don't want to be involved, especially ones that physically or psychologically hurt people."
"Agreed, all those 'prank' channels where they say and do horrible things to their children and then go 'it's just a prank, you little baby!' while their kid is sobbing… that sh*t makes me sick."
Pranksters
"Physically involving people who didn't want to be involved (e.g. YouTube / TikTok pranksters)"
"ANYTHING should be allowed on pure standup comedy though."
The Golden Rule
"I had a practical joke book when I was a kid and on the first page and the back it had in big letters: 'The golden rule of pranks: A prank is supposed to make people happy and laugh' If you pull a prank on someone and they don't laugh or find it funny, no matter what: YOUR PRANK WASNT FUNNY! STOP, APOLOGISE IMMEDIATELY, EXPLAIN YOURSELF AND APOLOGISE MORE. If you don't do this, you're not a prankster you're just an a**hole!""
"At the end of every joke it had 'Remember the Golden Rule' It kinda stuck with me 20 years later."
– Cprich22
Dark humor is perfectly acceptable, but even those can have hard limits.
Rule Of Thumb
"Nothing should be off limits, but Chris Rock gave a good rule of thumb on Talking Funny that you should joke about what people DO, not what they ARE."
Frankie Boyle
"Frankie Boyle is possibly my least favourite comedian because, while some of his lines are funny (albeit dark and uncomfrotable) he usually goes for the darkest and most controversial thing he can say in a given scenario even if it is not really relevant or funny. His dark jokes are fine but they're ruined for me by the fact he clearly tries to make everything as dark and controversial as he can, and sometimes they end up being funny, rather than being as funny as possible and sometimes they're dark and controversial."
A Study In Contrasts
"Listen, dark jokes are fine. Nothing is off limits. But there's a difference between being funny and just saying disgusting sh*t."
"Bias Comedy"
"Shock comedy, and what I'll call 'bias comedy.'"
"If the punchline itself is just the fact that you said a racial slur, or made fun of somebody with cerebral palsy, that's pretty lame."
"Also, if the only reason anyone is laughing is just because you made a political statement and they agree with you, that's pretty lame as well."
Reading the room was mentioned as a key factor to successfully landing a joke.
Gauge The Audience
"Comedy is subjective, there should be no limits. However it is still a good idea to keep in mind who the audience is."
The Right Structure
"depends on the structure of the Joke."
"you can laugh: about it , or with it , or at it."
"if you laugh at someone or something on the other hand , you reeeaally gotta know your audience."
Expectations
"I think it's a mutual trust thing, both the comedian should know the audience and the audience should know the comedian. I will not sympathize with someone who is offended at jokes Bill Burr makes and then simultaneously goes to a Bill Burr performance a few weeks later."
Racist jokes are tricky. I understand some of them are rooted in truth, but if delivered poorly, they can be downright offensive.
Being Asian, I'm indifferent to a comedian's dig at a minority group if it's based on a tired stereotype like, "Asians make terrible drivers"—which is absolutely not true.
To deliver hackneyed jokes like that is a mark of laziness in my opinion.
But even more unforgivable is when racial epithets are used. I cringe whenever a comic of any ethnicity uses a racist slur targeting themselves as if to demonstrate they have permission to denigrate their own community.
And it's not about being "too sensitive." The opposition stems from the need to prevent microaggressions from potentially evolving into bigger forms of hatred many ethnic groups constantly face in their everyday lives.
But that's just my take.
They say imitation is the best form of flattery.
Actor and comedian Kenan Thompson is best known for his tenure at Saturday Night Live.
He has a number of solid characters and impressions under his belt, from Charles Barkley to David Ortiz.
One of his most popular, and perhaps most dead-on in his portrayal, is Steve Harvey.
Family Feud: Extended Family - SNLwww.youtube.com
The SNL cast member was recently approached by Harvey himself, on the set of Thompson's new reality competition show Bring the Funny. Turns out, Harvey is very familiar with Thompson's impression of him, and issued him a joking threat.
Thompson spoke of this encounter to Fox News.
"I just saw [Steve Harvey] when we were shooting 'Bring The Funny' and he was on the next stage doing 'Family Feud,' so I sat down with him and he was like, 'You better watch yourself'. I love Steve. I've known him for a super long time."
Despite Fox, it was a pretty funny encounter.
Many SNL fans thought so too.
Steve Harvey telling Kenan Thompson to watch himself over his SNL impression is by far the funniest thing he has ever done— Dazzling, Deft & Devoid of Feeling (@Dazzling, Deft & Devoid of Feeling) 1558026290.0
#SteveHarvey #kenanthompson Celebrity boxing match is needed to settle this!! https://t.co/GDVbikjtgq— christian (@christian) 1558023586.0
While initially some fans took the threat a little seriously, it was obvious to Thompson that the comment was in jest.
After all, he is a comedian.
"Comedy is a craft. It's something that you sharpen over time so the more you educate yourself about topics and references the better [your comedy] will be and the more appealing it'll be to a wider audience. Your comedy skills get better over time but you have to work at it."
Thompson has gained a large following over the years, beginning with his involvement with Nickelodeon in the 90's. After starring in shows such as Kenan and Kel and All That!, he wound up scoring a spot on the biggest sketch comedy show of all time.
In fact, Thompson broke the record for the longest running SNL cast member.
He is now has sixteen seasons under his belt, and he won't be stopping anytime soon.

Thompson is now getting his own sitcom on NBC, titled The Kenan Show, along with a new unscripted reality game show called Bring the Funny.
He has no plans to leave SNL.
What a legend.
