People Noticed A Common Thread In This Photo Of A Movie Theatre Marquee, And 90s Kids Are Relating Hard
As the republic continues to crumble, nostalgia has never been more in.
This is exemplified by the theatre marquee at Edwards Cinema which features a list of movies that will have you checking the date to make sure you're in the right decade.
The picture of the marquee shows the films Toy Story 4, Men in Black, Godzilla, Aladdin, and Child's Play—all of which had wildly successful iterations in the 1990s.
Devon Sawa—himself a 90s heartthrob—tweeted the image with the caption:
"Dear children of today: Like it or not, you're really 90s kids."
The films are still a little different than their original counterparts: Pixar's animation has grown by leaps and bounds since the original Toy Story's release in 1995, Aladdin is a live-action remake, This decade'sChild's Play revolves around technology rather than voodoo, and Men in Black now features a woman as the lead.
Nevertheless, the marquee had people hella disoriented.
Some lamented that the nostalgia is actually a lack of originality.
If that doesn't overwhelm you, The Lion Kingwill be arriving to theatres next month.
Little Girl Is Not Having Any Of Princess Jasmine Needing Aladdin In Order To See The World In Applause-Worthy Viral Video
One of the most iconic moments in Disney's Aladdin and its various iterations (including the Broadway production and the remake) is the song "A Whole New World," sung by Aladdin and Jasmine as they soar over the world on their magic carpet.
The song starts off with Aladdin singing "I can show you the world," and little Madison Jade says that Jasmine is perfectly capable of doing that herself, thanks very much.
Here is the song from the original animated Aladdin (1992) film:

"I can show you the world,/ take you wonder by wonder,/ over, sideways, and under,/ on a magic carpet ride."
Well, according to one little girl who saw the movie, Jasmine doesn't need a boy to "take her to see the world."
Madison Jade, 4, had a videoed conversation with her mom about the Aladdin remake a day before going to see the film.
"Jasmine needs to go see the world by herself because Aladdin needs to just stay there and Jasmine can just go by herself," she said. "There is not enough space on the carpet" for both Aladdin and Jasmine, so Aladdin can just stay home.

Jasmine showed up in the Disney Renaissance period of the late 80s/early-to-mid 90s alongside a slew of other Disney princesses such as Ariel from The Little Mermaid, Belle from Beauty And The Beast, and Pocahontas from Pocahontas.
The princesses are often subject to feminist readings, as many of their stories are centered around men. Jasmine often ends up in a tricky middling place, as she is literally locked in the palace for most of the film, though she is opinionated and fiercely independent otherwise.

Fans Were Wondering Why Aladdin Is So Fully Dressed In The Remake—And The Movie's Costume Designer Just Responded
Since December, Disney fans have been abuzz with questions about the reimagining of one of the most popular movies from the '90s: Aladdin.
Questions have ranged from the genie's recasting, to where the movie would be filmed.
But one of the most recurring questions has been centered around Aladdin and Jasmine's shift in apparel.
Why did Disney put all the live action Aladdin characters in non revealing clothing? 🤣 https://t.co/lhqvA3pyQS— Matthew Lush (@Matthew Lush) 1549853517.0
The decisions behind the apparel choices for both characters are actually fairly straight-forward, however.
To those of us who have seen the 1992 animated classic, Aladdin wears a purple waistcoat and cream-colored pants, tied with a crimson cummerbund, and his maroon fez hat.
To suddenly see Aladdin in a maroon cap, red patterned waistcoat, and a long-sleeved, white-striped shirt, over distressed linen trousers, and a pair of moccasin-style boots, many viewers were surprised and had questions about dealing with the dry climate.
However, according to Michael Wilkinson, the team's costume designer:
"For the same reason why we thought it wasn't appropriate for Princess Jasmine to be flashing her belly button for half of the film, we also felt that once you make that leap from cartoon into live-action, you really have to make some adjustments."
"We thought having so much skin showing on Aladdin for the whole film would be quite distracting on a human actor as opposed to a cartoon character."
There's been a similar response around Jasmine's costume design. Jasmine's turquoise crop-top and harem pants is an iconic outfit, and it received a significant update for the reboot.
Her new outfit includes a flesh-colored bodice to cover her midriff, and her harem pants now have peacock feathers. Early-released photos also show a range of dresses that are better suited to the palace and market spaces.
Wilkinson explained:
"We wanted to, of course, refer to the iconic image from the animated film but within the context of the world we were creating around Jasmine, [such as] the way the courtiers dress and the way the people from the market town dress."
"It really felt more appropriate to do something that referred to the crop top that we see in the animation but we extended the [top's] line down, we had almost a flesh-colored fabric through the waist, but because it was more of a formal outfit for the palace court, it's quite restrictive."
For both characters, these shifts seem to make sense and are more socially conscious.
All of this thought and work aside, however, it seems Disney fans share mixed feelings via Twitter.

Zayn and Zhavia Ward's 'A Whole New World' From Disney's Live-Action 'Aladdin' Soars With Fans
Alan Menken's Academy Award-winning song " A Whole New World" received a stunning makeover by young pop artists Zayn and Zhavia Ward for the upcoming live-action Aladdin movie.
And boy, does this new duet reach dazzling heights.
In all deference to the 1992 synthesized top 40 hit sung by R&B artists Peabo Bryson and Regina Belle, Zayn and Zhavia's ethereal vocals on the updated cover is captivating today's music listeners.
Check out the newest "A Whole New World" delighting a new generation of fans with the music video below.

Even the music video is stunning in its simplicity, with New York City replacing Agrabah serving as the backdrop. The pair wistfully sing from their respective locations from the rooftops of Manhattan to Bethesda Terrace in Central Park.

The middle eastern vocals in the beginning are an exquisite touch and sets the poignant tone. There is no magic carpet or magical lamps in this video.
The lack of a flashy gimmick reveals a sophisticated interpretation that is mesmerizing and almost trance-like.
The visual tone of the video is a departure from what one might expect. Instead of embracing each other as they sing, the singers seem to yearn about the one that got away or are perhaps reminiscing about happier times.
Whatever the intention, this new world has more depth and is reverberating with those who feel a little lost but are hopeful of finding their someone once again.

It helps that both singers deliver on the vocals and approach the classic material by putting their own stamp on it.
Zayn was a force performing along with international sensation One Direction up until his departure in 2015, and Zhavia Ward is a relative newcomer who was one of four finalists on Fox's
The Four: Battle for Stardom.
In May 2018, she signed with Columbia Records and was featured on Diplo and Lil Pump's single "Welcome to the Party."

The original ballad from 1992's animated feature was sung by voice actors and singers Lea Salonga and Brad Kane.
The obligatory R&B rendition rolling through the final credits was delivered with smooth sophistication by Regina Belle and Peabo Bryson, who remains in stable condition after suffering a mild heart attack on April 29, 2019.
Bryson's medical team and family are optimistic for a speedy recovery.
The live-action remake will premiere in movie theaters on May 24, 2019.
Disney is remaking all of its classics into live-action.
That's no secret.
Aladdin is scheduled to be released on May 24, 2019 in North America, and it's already sparking the nostalgia-bomb.
So when some fans were going through and watching the whole Aladdin series of animated films, they noticed something interesting...
Aladdin and the King of Thieves, the third film in the series, features Aladdin fighting off the legendary 40 thieves, from the Ali Baba and the Forty Thievesmythos (added to the collection One Thousand Nights And One Night by Antoine Galland in the 18th century, who also added the original Aladdin story, Alœddin And The Magic Lamp to the collection.)
Aladdin & The King of Thieves - Welcome To The Forty Thieves (1080p)www.youtube.com
This song sounds exactly like "Friend Like Me," doesn't it?
But according to Reddit user u/Phyrandria, the way the movie progresses is dictated by a wish Aladdin made in the first film: to be a Prince, in order to impress Jasmine.
As the son of a king, Aladdin technically would become the prince of thieves.
And his dad is, in fact, the king.
However, the plot of the film takes a turn after that seems to be borne out of a toxic culture in the 90s.
That theme, is, of course, "family is everything."
This theme runs deeply in Aladdin's history, with Howard Ashman composing the deeply longing and semi-autobiographical "Proud Of Your Boy," in which Aladdin sings to his mother that though she doesn't accept who he is, he'll make her proud.
Proud of your Boy Demowww.youtube.com
Ouch, right in the feels.
But still, this is a narrative we are working to change in current days.
Genie has a line to Aladdin in this movie:
"I know your dad made a lot of bad choices, but that doesn't mean that you have to."
But then if Genie cast the spell that made Aladdin's dad the king of thieves, then like...didn't Genie make the bad decisions for him?
Can a human be blamed for the magic of a Jinn? Why is this such a complicated moral question????

If the fan theory is true, Genie, you got some 'splaining to do.
