Yes to that washer machine!

My wife and I won $600 at bingo...

We got excited because we needed a new washing machine.

When it's forced upon you

When I was standing in a room at work with four other co-workers and one said "I need an adult" and all four of them turned and looked at me.

Taking care of business

Yesterday I replaced my broken TV remote and bought new pillows to help me sleep better, all in one go.

It's all about how you look at it

I don't feel like an adult as much as I do a child with an ever expanding list of responsibilities that keep changing as soon as I figure them out.

When life has you going solo

[rebelmouse-image 18356319 is_animated_gif= dam=1 expand=1]

Moving out on my own. I had no clue what I was doing. One of the best but also one of the loneliest times of my life.

That will do it!

When I was 19 and it was a very real possibility I'd have to take my mum to court for custody of my younger brother.

It's the little things

[rebelmouse-image 18356320 is_animated_gif= dam=1 expand=1]

Being excited about getting new sponges to do dishes with.

Adult activities

[rebelmouse-image 18356321 is_animated_gif= dam=1 expand=1]

The second time I bought condoms. The first time was motivated by hope, but the second time was motivated by responsibility.

When you find a deal at the grocery store

[rebelmouse-image 18356322 is_animated_gif= dam=1 expand=1]

I saw broccoli crowns on sale for 0.99 per pound and audibly said "Oh my God."

The moment when you are sure you are a parent

[rebelmouse-image 18356323 is_animated_gif= dam=1 expand=1]

I've told this before, but when I took my newborn son to the pediatrician for the first time and filled out the paperwork, I got to the blank for "emergency contact." The instructions said that this is usually the mother, so I started to write my mother's name in it, but then I remembered that "the mother" was actually me. Sort of a quiet, life-changing moment.

Marriage

[rebelmouse-image 18356324 is_animated_gif= dam=1 expand=1]

When I got married recently. Lived with my significant other for a while, had a job etc. But there is just something that feels very adult about saying "my husband".

Loss

[rebelmouse-image 18345182 is_animated_gif= dam=1 expand=1]

Losing my older sister 4.5 years ago. I was 28 at the time. My brain finally clicked and went "So Loss will define the rest of my life." Lost my dad 2 years later, and kind of solidified that thought in my head. And now I am one. Miss you both.

When your dating game changes

I started rejecting girls based on my finances and how much baggage they have.

Bills bills bills

[rebelmouse-image 18354661 is_animated_gif= dam=1 expand=1]

Mortgage payments and negotiation. It's so s***.

Taking responsibility for your own actions

[rebelmouse-image 18356325 is_animated_gif= dam=1 expand=1]

When I made a mistake at work and, instead of trying to hide it or shift the blame, owned up to my manager about it and helped fix it.

Knowing when it's time to call it

[rebelmouse-image 18351145 is_animated_gif= dam=1 expand=1]

Traveled alone in Europe last week and met some nice Canadian 20-somethings. They invited me bar hopping. An hour later, I'm tired and excused myself, but not before first asking if everyone was going to get home all right.

It was midnight and I'm in my early 30s.

The most glorious thing to adults

[rebelmouse-image 18356327 is_animated_gif= dam=1 expand=1]

Appreciating sleep.

Just thinking about the essentials

[rebelmouse-image 18356328 is_animated_gif= dam=1 expand=1]

I unironically put socks on my Christmas List.

Long term responsibilities

[rebelmouse-image 18355465 is_animated_gif= dam=1 expand=1]

Financing my first car. Looking at the paperwork and thinking, "I have to pay this much EVERY month now?"

When you get practical

[rebelmouse-image 18346635 is_animated_gif= dam=1 expand=1]

I stopped wearing heels every day

Let me be real for a second.

Every time I listen to Bjork's "Unravel," my heart breaks a bit.

Have you ever listened to it?

It's on Homogenic, her third studio album, and it's incredible, passionate, smartly produced and a great showcase for her stupendous voice.

That song? An emotional rollercoaster, for sure.

There's tons of great music out there, though, and even more sad and gorgeous songs to discover.
