We like to think we're cleaner than we really are. Sometimes, we declare we have "OCD" and our house or apartment has to be cleaned in a special way. Then, you move the TV stand out of the way and witness a horror of clumped hair and dust bunnies so ravenous, you've suddenly lost control of your home. There's always a spot we're missing on our cleaning day, and Reddit user, r/Indignant_Latina, wanted to know when they asked:

I used to be a professional cleaner. Our crew would clean the ductwork in public schools over the summer. Some of these schools had gone years, even a decade without cleaning.

They would say "oh our AC is so sh---y and old, it barely cools down the rooms anymore."

But nah. These schools had compressors that could terraform the f---ing moon. They just couldn't force air through the supplies that were clogged with 10 years worth of dust (dead flesh).

You know how often you push open a door instead of using the handle? It's a lot. Whether you're holding open a door for someone or don't bother closing it all the way, its there and it builds up. Same with trim around doorways.

My mum never cleaned ours before it was used for the first time in a few months and while we were just under where it sits she turned it on and hundreds (no exaggeration) of baby red back spiders rained down onto us causing the biggest panic my family has ever experienced...

Walk over to your faucet. You almost certainly have one in either your bathroom or your kitchen, because those are the places where people usually keep their faucets. (Faucets should not be confused with spigots, which are the faucet-like fixtures that are sometimes found outside of houses.)

Anyway, you probably clean your faucet fairly often, if only via accidental splashing during food-preparation or face-beautifying activities. There might be a little bit of residue on the metal -- the remnants of spat-out toothpaste, perhaps, or maybe stains left over from a mishap with some variety of sauce -- but on the whole, that valve-operated spout likely looks pretty close to spotless. What you don't see, though, is that there's a colony of potentially deadly microorganisms waiting just out of sight, possibly commingling with an equally distressing contamination of mold.

Reach over to your faucet, and take hold of it just above where the water comes out. If you twist that area just right, you'll discover that there's a detachable filter of sorts. Most people pay very little attention to this element... but if you're one of the unlucky souls who have been invaded by bacteria and spores, you'll soon realize that a dark slime has congealed within it.

You've been drinking that.

Fortunately, it's easy enough to remove the offending sludge: Just pour a bit of bleach into the unattached filter, rinse it out with hot water, then repeat that process until the mesh looks clean enough to stick in your mouth. (Don't actually stick it in your mouth, though. It's a choking hazard.) Run some more hot water through it after you've replaced the piece, then forget about it again. It's not like you really need to clean it that often, anyway.

After all... you've been drinking that.

TL;DR: There's a good chance that your faucet has been serving you with generous helpings of mold.
