People Recall The Creepiest Internet Events That Occurred In The Last Decade

The internet can be a creepy place.

Since it is an inherently anonymous user platform, anything can really happen on the internet. Coupled with the fact that the internet has changed a lot since 2010, and the Cambridge Analytica scandal noted the ways in which the deep and dark web could influence daily lives, we have a whole host of events that transpired because of the internet that are deeply disturbing.

Redditor TMCD167 asked:

What are the creepiest/scariest Internet events to have occurred this decade?

Here were some of those answers.

Slender

"The Slender Man stabbing, where two girls attempted to stab their friend to death in order to please a viral fictional character. The creepiest part is watching the police interviews of the two girls, just a couple hours after the stabbing."

Missiles

"One I can still remember is that false missile/attack alert that went out in Hawaii. People rightly freaked out thinking the islands were getting attacked until it was all sorted as a false alarm. I can't imagine how much that probably messed people up, even if it was only for a short time."

True Sadism

"Couple Drowns In Front Of Camera" A youtube video showing a newly wed couple accidentally drowning in a pond in Yemen, Caught on camera. Discovered later by a passerby. Just uploaded to youtube on 2013. Thinking about it still distresses me a little bit. How it happened so suddenly and how someone could just upload it to youtube like it was any other video."

Not Safe

"Snowden's exposure of NSA's and CIA's control of information we thought was private. Though probably not the the first person, certainly most popular."

The End Of The Road

"McKamey manor is on YouTube and somehow allowed so I'd say it counts. It's also odd that it's all over the internet and it hasn't been shut down. Someone almost died after being dragged through gravel behind a truck with nothing to protect his skin. The goal is to scare you out of winning the prize. No one has won because they will kill you to prove they don't lose."

Monsters

"A Norwegian hacker uncovering that the largest child sexual abuse website on the dark web was being run by Australian police in order to bait and then arrest pedophiles. The forum had over one million registered users who made accounts, and was one of many like it. They made an amazing podcast about it called "Hunting Warhead". I have listened to and read a huge amount of disturbing content and I almost threw up even though there is almost nothing graphic or violent."

What's Up New Tech Company

"All your information is being stolen by tech companies to make millions off of your browsing habits and conversations you have with friends. Sold to countless unknown entities that you don't have the privilege of knowing."

Deep Dark Web

"The Silk Road. There was so much crazy stuff going on there, feds were moving in, Ulbricht was hiring hits, scams for thousands of dollars were being run just before the site went down. I mean Jesus even the founder was scammed out of his money. Those chat logs between Ulbricht and the people he was hiring/"killing"...chilling."

Your Device Listens To You

"I would say the emergence in stories about receiving ads that are related to conversations you've had. For example, I got called into the counselor once and we talked about therapy options, then a few hours later I opened Instagram and got an ad for online therapy sessions. I've had this happen several times but this was the most memorable because it was right after I had heard about this occurrence but I didn't believe it. By now I'm sure most people wouldn't be surprised that this happens but still creepy to think about."

Massive Political Complications

"The ISIS execution videos online, and even scarier the fact that they learned all that from the execution videos of Mexican cartels, especially the "Zetas" witch are still active a drive away from Texas."

"BTW, the Zetas got trained by the US government, they where part of an elite group of the Mexican military, trained alongside US elites, and one day they all departed at once, taking with them lots of heavy weapons and starting a cartel."

People Explain How They Would Have Died Without Modern Medicine

Reddit user Inhalegoodshat asked: 'If it wasn't for modern medicine what killed you?'

While there is still a lot that we don't know, like how to cure cancer and other illnesses, it's undeniable that modern medicine has come a long way.

So much so, there are many illnesses people get today that likely would have killed them without modern medical attention, antibiotics, and perhaps even surgery.

Food poisoning can hit you at any time and no one's immune.

All it takes is one horrific experience for you to swear off certain types of dishes, cuisine, or restaurants for good–even if you craved them before.

Even the foods you prepare in your own kitchen and consume can give you a night spent on the bathroom floor due to casual negligence like failing to inspect the expiration date on packaged foods or undercooking meat.

There's an old saying which says "a team is only as strong as their weakest link."

However, if the team loses a game or competition, in most cases their loss can't be blamed solely on whomever that unlucky individual is.

As it's the team's job to work together and lift up their struggling teammates.

In other cases, however, one individual can be blamed for the misfortune or bad luck of one or more people.

As it was their poor judgment or bad decisions that put them and everyone else in the unfair, unfortunate situations they now find themselves in.

People pivot in order to survive.

Some of us find coupons and discounts galore.

Some of us skip meals.
