People Break Down Which Internet Trends They Are Happy Died Out

Not all trends are good ideas.

30 years down the line from the 90s, we can probably all agree that the relentless onslaught of colors that didn't match, bucket hats, and baggy clothes are probably stuff lost to the past that we are better off without.

20 years down the line from the web becoming a part of our everyday lives as citizens, we can probably agree some of the trends from our time with the internet probably weren't all winners.

u/I_wish_I_was_a_girl asked Reddit:

What is an internet trend you're happy died out?

Here were some of those answers.

Nobody Ever Needs A Chain Letter

Chain-letter style USENET posts.

eg. "If you don't post this to five other newsgroups, your family will die in a horrible car crash. My friend didn't pass the message on, and now her parents are dead."

InscrutableAudacity

I remember my mom repeatedly sending these "chains". I asked her to please stop sending them. She kept on. Next day, she sent a prayer chain that NEEDED to be forwarded 15 times. I sent it to her 15 times and got my screamed at, but she never sent me one again. Good times.

Actually A Like Doesn't Do Anything

"1 like = 1 prayer" captions of sick kids with something about how the kid need over 10k prayers for god to heal them as well as something guilty trippy about how you're letting the kid die if you keep scrolling without liking the post.

It was common on Facebook when I first signed up, but I haven't seen those kinds of posts in a while.

Lest We Forget The Clowns

On I have a story about a killer clown sighting.

So I used to work in an after school program. I worked there for about 6 months or so when this lady, let's call her Beatrice, gets hired. She's a real kind young lady but not quite all there. A few weeks later, she was in charge of a group of kids ages 7-9, no more than 10 kids. They were outside playing some games in our fields along with a couple of other groups of kids. Our fields aren't very big but they back into the elementary school fields on one side and the sidewalk to the park on the other side.

I was inside working the counter calling for kids when parents come in to pick them up. All of a sudden, the back doors swing open and a bunch of kids come running in. Some are sprinting and hiding in the corners while others have broken down crying. Others are hyped up and laughing, jumping up and down and yelling between each other. I attend to the kids while my boss runs outside to figure out what is going on.

The kids tell me that there is a killer clown outside and that it was coming to get them. I started dispersing the kids into different rooms with other staff members and calmed down the kids that were frightened beyond belief.

Turns out the 'killer clown' was just an old lady with short curly white hair, a plain red sweatshirt and mom jeans. Beatrice noticed her and screamed at the top of her lungs "RUN! KILLER CLOWN, RUN!".

My boss and I had to talk to many parents that day to apologize for the lack of professionalism that Beatrice portrayed. Oh, and Beatrice was fired.

There's A Reason I Don't Remember This

Ate My Balls.

Was all over the Internet in the late 90's and was basically along the lines of Star Trek Ate My Balls, X-Files Ate My Balls, Clinton Ate My Balls etc. and was nothing more than pictures of them with badly drawn balls on with speech bubbles saying how much they liked eating balls.

Reply Girls.

Back in the early days of Youtube, views are what mattered the most. There was also a feature where you can reply directly to videos. So in come replay girls. They would find the top trending videos and make their reply to it. They'd title them Re:(Video title). In the video, they would reiterate what happened, or some nonsensical rant. They would be sure to wear low cut shirts and push-up bras then made that the predominate thing showing in the thumbnail. They raked in thousands in ad revenue, as the average user clicked the video watched for a few seconds then clicked off, but at the same time making the view count shoot up. When Youtube switched to watch time, it pretty much killed reply girls on the platform.

Pretension, To More Than One Dimension

The hating on Minecraft, all it takes is a high profile Youtuber like Pewdiepie to start playing it to get people to stop jumping on the hate train against it, because at the end of the day what is the point of hating on a game as simple and fun as Minecraft?

KEYWORD

AOL. Back in the day a lot of people used AOL to get on-line and thought it was the Internet. AOL was it's own community and it had its own vast ecosystem. I can remember commercials on TV and business would say look us up on AOL Keyword blahblahblah or www.blahblahblah.com.

We need all kinds to make the world go round. This includes all kinds of people with all kinds of skillsets to do all kinds of jobs.

However, some jobs just aren't needed.

Sometimes it's because the occupation itself is silly. Other times, it's because the company went under or switched directions, but kept paying you for a job that no longer existed.

Whatever the case, Redditors have lots of stories about useless jobs and why they are considered useless, and are ready to share.

Not everything is a good idea and not every invention should be placed on the market.

But you'll never know what can be a success without seeing if people like it.

It may sound like a billion dollar idea but in the end, you may take a loss.

When in public with your significant other, we all try to play nice, but people don't always know who is and who is not together.

So their is no reason to incite a brawl if someone flirts with your person.

But it can be difficult to sit back and watch.

Is there a calm etiquette for these situations?

The establishing shot of a movie really sets the tone of the story to be told.

The audience must be engaged from the start. Filmmakers have the challenge of quickly trying to win over moviegoers in the hopes that they'll remain invested in the succession of events about to unfold.

Some films fail to deliver on their promise of wowing audiences with a misleading or clumsy opening–while others brilliantly pull it off.
