People Break Down Which Plot Twists Caught Them Entirely By Surprise

popular

It goes without saying:

WARNING. SPOILERS AHEAD.

Now that that's out of the way, a good plot twist can make or break a story. Either the plot has been meticulously building upon what you've seen, ramping up moment by moment to the shocking truth that will spin your mind. Or they hastily tack a twist on at the end that makes no sense, but these aren't those ones. These are the good ones.

Reddit user, u/freinlk, wanted to know:

What was the best plot twist that took you by surprise?

Do You Want To Play A Game?

The ending of the first SAW movie really blew my mind...

So many people are so ungrateful to be alive.

But not you.

Not anymore.

Almost Missed It With Eyes Closed

The reveal of the bent neck lady in haunting of hill house. Still a scene that sends chills down my spine.

Misslieness

That shocked me so much! I'm pretty sure I cried because it seemed so cruel.

CatsAreTheBest2

A lot of good reveals in that one. The realization that all of the kids have been in the room behind the red door. Realizing that the little girl the kids are friends with isn't a ghost.

Watch Closely...

The prestige. I don't want to spoil it for anyone else.

im25andvirgin

the Prestige's plot twist actually makes the movie better when you watch it a second time, imo

wouldthewolves

Throughout the movie they tell you repeatedly to watch closely and we still missed it. I immediately rewatched it once I finished it the first time.

Every Villain Has An Origin

Darth Vader being Luke's father

I wish I had gotten to see Empire in the theater when it first came out. I didn't see my Star Wars until 2004. Even though I didn't know much about the series, I still knew that. I wish I could have not known. It would have been awesome.

It's Not Just A Game.

Enders Game novel is probably one of the few things I went into without it being ruined for me.

The payoff plot twist was as amazing as it was heart wrenching.

I'm rereading POA at the moment and I feel like Ron's pet rat of all things ending up being the true villain of the book was such an underrated twist. Who could've seen that coming?

coturnixxx

It's so great because Scabbers has been there all along, it wasn't a "Oh look I got a pet rat" at the start of POA just to set up it being Pettigrew, he literally lived with the family for years and was mentioned numerous time in the first books.

I also absolutely love that Crookshanks, while totally acting like a normal cat after a rat, was also/really helping Sirius try and take out an enemy. We spend a huge chunk of the book just thinking he is/was a jerk to Ron's pet and at the end we're like "Dammit, I wish he really did eat Scabbers!"

Follow The Clues. Follow The Trail.

The Usual Suspects ending.

One of those movies you wish you could watch again for the first time.

Jfonzy

I saw the movie for the first time just a couple of years ago. I can't believe I've never seen it before and I can't believe it was never spoiled for me. I'm very grateful though.

happyhappyfool

Perfectly Balanced.

Thanos actually winning in Avengers: Infinity War. It really was refreshing to see an MCU movie where the villain actually won for once.

JC0246

I didn't expect him to win.

I watched the Marvel movies for the first time in late 2018 not knowing anything about them. I was looking for something new to watch and a friend introduced me to Marvel.

The snap took me by surprise.

Holy. Forking. Shirtballs.

The end of season 1 of The Good Place

I love that they didn't tell most of the cast about the plot twist, the video of them hearing the script for the first time is gold.

Seeing Dr. Cox's emotions slowly take over while he's choking back tears still hurts to watch 😭

Secrets are heavy. Holding a problem or discomfort inside seems to have its own extra dose of gravity. It feels lonely and usually, the best and only way to lighten that load is to get out.

We tell someone we trust the secret and we feel a little less lonely, and suddenly it doesn't all seem so heavy on our shoulders anymore.

These days, the deep flaws of humanity are on full display.

Look at the news for just a couple days and you'd concluded that inept leadership, chaotic conflict, disinformation efforts, and environmental violence would appear to be the primary indicators of humanity.
