Not everyone is a great judge of character, and not everyone who is a bad person is comic book villain variety evil, so it makes sense that there would be some popular people who aren't quite as great as they seem to lost people.

Reddit user u/tomdrc1 asked:

"What's your 'I hate him/her but everybody else loves him/her' story?"

This girl who I knew from school. She's super religious and is trying to be a famous vlogger on YouTube talking about her faith. She seems so fake to me! Like she also writes blogs. She recently got married and wrote a blog about how they were waiting until the wedding to have their first kiss. But I know she has given her last boyfriend oral. So she writes about how she waited to have her first kiss with her now husband at their wedding because God wants her to. Whatever. She just flaunts her faith and everyone seems to love her and how spiritual she is. I can hardly stand her.

Edit: I didn't even include this but I guess this is probably the main reason she isn't a good person in my eyes. So when she got engaged she started to feel guilty that she has a sexual history her family and fiancé didn't know about. So she told them that she had given someone a blowout. But she said the guy forced her too and didn't consent. For weeks her family and fiancé thought this but weren't planning on taking action because girl didn't want them too. Family kept pushing her to report it to the police.

Then she revealed she lied. She had wanted to and was just embarrassed so she made it up. The guy she lied about is a friend of mine and one of the kindest people. The only reason I know about this is because her dad worked for my dad and had told my dad the entire thing looking for advice.

Former colleague. Was sweet as sugar to everyone, sucking up and being really obvious about it, but also never admitted to making mistakes and somehow... idk, she just did it really well.

At the same time, she bullied me in subtle ways that would be invisible to anyone else. Excluding me from work social events. Sending me out to run the wrong errand or only half of it. 'Forgetting' to tell me about things I needed to do or meetings I needed to be at. What a b*tch.

I used to work with this guy who was nice enough, but everyone swore he was the funniest guy you've ever met. He was taking a few weeks off of work when I first arrived, so I hadn't met him yet and everyone talked him up as the office funny-guy. When I finally met him, he would always just quote 2000s comedy movies (Step-brothers, Superbad, Wedding Crashers, Etc.) but get the quotes extremely wrong. Like painfully incorrect.

Everyone ate it up and said how funny he was, but I never saw it. It was really just bizarre how funny people thought incorrectly regurgitated Will Ferrell quotes were. Especially if he said them at a loud enough volume.

Former boss.

There were only two of us working underneath him and like 45 people above him.

He was obsequious and charming with the higher ups and treated me like garbage. My coworker was on the road 95% of the time so never got to fully experience how unhinged this guy was.

Because everyone liked him so much, my complaints about him fell on deaf ears, and were even turned against me to make me look like the crazy one ("Everyone gets along with Brock, how could you not like him?")

Eventually he was promoted, but that said enough about the company culture for me to quit.

A girl I used to work with was nasty! We're in healthcare so sanitation matters. She was always putting her hand IN her pants to scratch or adjust her thong and then would handle equipment with her nasty hands. I caught several times where she didn't properly clean a room after a procedure and there was blood still on equipment.

I told my manager several times but she was friends with a doctor and our owner so no one wanted to do anything about it.

I finally told my manager that she either needed to fire her or i would call OSHA and make complaints to them. Finally, she was fired.

A teacher from my primary school. His students all thought he was hilarious, entertaining, kind, engaging, etc etc etc. All good things. I only ever saw him as a small minded control freak and bully. He sent me to detention because I didn't remember something from a previous class... A class I had missed due to an unavoidable appointment that he knew full well about.

He made jokes about my performance in school shows. When I answered questions correctly, he called me a show off, know it all etc. When I was in charge of writing something for a school show he told me I'd done everything wrong and was stupid, without any help to improve. One time he pulled my chair out from underneath me to prove some kind of point. F*cking hate that man.

My ex. We broke up 2 years ago. We are both from a very small town where everyone knows everyone and all of their business. In the year or so after we broke up, everyone would come up to me and say "Awww, I didn't know you dated ________. He is SOOOO awesome.

I love him! What happened?!" I only told about 3 people (my closest girlfriends) that our relationship ended because he cheated on me. I didn't want to be that bitter girl that talks sh*t about him to everyone. But man, something deep down inside of me wants so badly for people to know how bad he treated me and that he has cheated on almost every one of his exes.

Me. People tend to think I am smart, capable, friendly, even a few peole think I'm attractive. I think that I am lazy, reclusive, curt, and a bit overweight. I hate receiving praise for anything because honestly, I could have done better and every time I get invited to a social event I think people are doing it out of routine since I usually bail on plans. I don't get my appeal.

My AP history teacher

Everyone loved him for flamboyantly dressing up as historical figures for class but I hated his snobby @ss for threatening to send kids who didn't finish their HW to shop class.

The dude literally thought book smarts were superior to mechanical aptitude and the trades.

She spins unbelievable yarns but never anything you can call out. Stuff like 'Ive got the heaviest deadlift of all the girls in my gym' she is pretty strong so ok, maybe. Then 'i shot the biggest deer ever shot in my region' ok, i dont know enough about deer to dispute that. 'I hold the course record for obscure horse race'. Possibly? Tried to google it, but no results came up.

All sound moderately reasonable but the endless stream of elite bests and her own persona make me doubt it all, but people seem to be totally wow-ed by her amazing all round successes. Have tried to buddy buddy (i also like a good deadlift) and she dodges any attempts to lift together. I used to ride so asked more about the race and got a 'oh you wouldn't know it, its invite only for certain level riders' answer. 99% sure its all horsesh*t but the 1% stops me from calling it out.
