There's nothing worse than a fad that outstays its welcome.

You look at it and think, "there's no way this will last very long." But alas, three years later, it's still around, darkening your doorstep.

What exactly is going through everyone's minds?

And why do we have to suffer for it?

u/Kingtripz asked:

What's a craze that lasted a lot longer than it should have?

Here were some of the answers.

Do The HARLEM SHAKE!

Giphy

People still to this day upload Harlem Shake videos.

C*nt_Puffin

One of my favorite/least favorite things to do when I'm bored is go to YouTube and search "Harlem shake" then sort by upload date. Same with searching like "Minecraft let's play episode 1"

My Patience Is The Only Thing Being Challenged

Viral "challenges." The ice bucket challenge actually helped advance ALS research, but every other one since has just been stupid.

My nephew loves Minions. He's 5. I gladly buy him Minion stuff and watch the movies with him (they're actually very cute, although get grating after the 5th or 6th rewatch -- luckily he's recently got into The Incredibles which is a much more rewatch-able movie).

What I never really understood was the whole craze of Minion Facebook memes being shared by 30+ year olds. They don't even have anything to do with Minions. Why were they so pervasive for so long? I still see them on occasion, and it feels like the internet version of a measles outbreak. Like, I thought we got rid of that.

Enough, Movies Already Cost Too Much

3D in movies.

I though it was a short resurgence like there is every other decade but damn, this time it took long to fade out again.

I admit that sometimes it looks nice, but having to pay more and wear stupid glasses in addition to many people not even being able to see it properly, just made it so annoying...

Lookin Like A FOOL

That whole baggy pants that show your boxers and hang around the bottom of your hips look. It finally seems like it's fading away but it was around for almost two decades.

Nomahhhh

Oh, that fad is still going on, except that instead of baggy pants, they're wearing tight slim fit pants, but still sagging them to show off boxers. Usually paired with a belt (which isn't doing any work), and they're usually walking around holding onto the crotch so the pants don't fall down.

BAM.

Blackface, apparently.

Grrr....Arrgh....

The whole zombie craze in Western media. The unlimited amount of movies, TV series, video games, etc. based around surviving a zombie apocalypse. Don't get me wrong, it's a compelling premise and some really great sh*t has been made of it, but it has lasted at least an entire decade and definitely overstayed its welcome.

Houses In Fact Should Change With The Times

The ugly 70s style home decor, including shag carpeting, flower print couches, harvest gold wallpaper, avocado green appliances, etc.,

Forty years after the fact you STILL find houses with that damn gaudiness in it. It was inexcusable then, it sure in the hell didn't get any better with aging.

G-L-A-M....

For like 12-15 years, every f*cking pop and hiphop song that came out had performers blathering on about how rich and successful and famous they are, and how everybody wanted to be them and/or copy them. The irony of being the 95th person to sing about how everybody is supposedly copying their style was apparently lost on them.

Even disco only lasted 4 or 5 years before the public revolted. But this shit just went on and on. Source: I was a DJ from 1995 to around 2010. Every new hit that came out spouting that same old bullsh*t just made me want to puke.

Ohhh PacSun

Giphy

People have mentioned baggy/sagged jeans, but how about jeans with extremely wide legs? Like Bullhead, JNCO, etc.

I remember in the late 90s/early 2000s going into Pacific Sunwear and seeing jeans sorted by the width of the pant legs, literally measured in inches. Some had legs that were as wide as the waist and were so insanely huge that they just looked like you were wearing a denim dress. Peak XTREME culture. Every rock band had a DJ and every pop song was filled with generic record scratching. I feel like we've collectively erased this era from our memories.
